Hello, my name is Mrs. Tipping and I'm really looking forward to learning with you today all about Significant Rulers From The Past.

And we're going to explore the question, what can those rulers, what can their stories tell us? So shall we get started? Let's go.

<v ->By the end of today's lesson,</v> you'll be able to explain what Magna Carta was and why King John had to agree to it.

Before we start, I would like to introduce you to some key words.

We'll be using these key words during the lesson, so it might be a good idea to write these words down.

The key words we'll be using today are rebellion, Magna Carta, laws.

I'm going to say those again and I'd like you to repeat the words after me.

Rebellion, Magna Carta, laws.

Good job.

<v ->Now let's think in more detail about what each</v> of these key words mean.

Let's take a look at their definitions.

A rebellion is when people refuse to listen to orders and fight against leaders.

Magna Carter was a written document that set out the rules a king or queen had to follow.

Laws are a set of rules that everyone has to follow.

Pause the video here to make a note of these key words, and when you are ready to continue, press play.

These are the learning cycles that we'll be working through together in today's lesson.

The rebellion of the barons, Magna Carter.

In the first learning cycle, we'll explore the rebellion of the barons.

Over 800 years ago, King John ruled England.

His brother Richard had been a successful king of England before him and won many battles.

However, this had cost England a lot of money.

King John made lots of people in England very angry.

I wonder how did King John make people angry? Well, King John had to continue the wars started by his brother in France with very little money.

So he made the people of England pay higher taxes and he asked for lots of money and armies from the barons.

And John kept losing battles and land in France and wasting everyone's money, which made them very angry.

Not only this King John also made the people of England angry because he refused to do what the leaders of the church told him to do.

And as punishment, they closed all the churches in England.

And going to church was the most important thing in life for most people in England.

And so they were very upset and angry with King John can see an illustration of King John I there.

So lots of his people were very unhappy with him.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

King John was popular in England.

Is that true or false? What do you think? If you said false? That's absolutely right.

Now looking at these two statements, which of these would help to justify your answer? He made people pay more taxes and lost wars.

He made everyone go to church.

Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner.

Which of these two statements would help to justify your answer? And press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said he made people pay more taxes and lost wars, you're absolutely right, and that's what made King John very unpopular.

Now, the barons were very unhappy with King John, and they were important and powerful people with their own armies and castles in England.

So together they decided to start a rebellion against King John.

Can you remember what is a rebellion? It's one of our key words.

Well, a rebellion is when people refuse to listen to orders and fight against their leaders.

So this was a big problem for John.

Let's take a moment to pause here.

Who decided to start a rebellion against King John? Everyone, the barons, the church.

Pause the video here and have a quick discussion with your learning partner, and press play when you're ready to continue.

So who started a rebellion? It was the barons.

Well done if you got that right.

In 1215 CE, a group of barons joined their armies together and marched to face King John in rebellion.

This was over 800 years ago.

You see that illustration of the armies of the barons doesn't look like a very nice battle.

King John was not powerful enough to fight the armies of the barons in battle, and so he had no choice but to offer to talk about the changes they wanted.

So they met in a field in the south of England to talk.

And finally, King John and the barons made an agreement.

Can see that illustration there of the barons and King John having their talk and making an agreement.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Can you match the beginning of each sentence to the correct ending? So we have a group of barons joined.

King John was not.

King John had to agree to.

And the end of the sentences.

Talk to the barons and make an agreement.

Powerful enough to fight the barons in battle.

Their armies together to face King John.

So can you match the beginning and the end of each of these sentences correctly? Pause the video here and make sure you give yourself a moment to do that and press play when you're ready to continue.

How did you get on? Shall we take a look? So we've got a group of barons joined their armies together to face King John.

King John was not powerful enough to fight the barons in battle.

King John had to agree to talk to the barons and make an agreement.

Well done if you were able to match those.

This brings us to our first learning task.

I'd like you to put the following events into the correct order with number one as the earliest.

So we have the barons marched to face King John.

King John and the barons made an agreement.

King John made lots of people in England angry.

King John had to agree to talk with the barons.

The barons joined their armies together in rebellion.

So pause the video here and give yourself enough time to order these events and press play when you're ready to continue.

How did that go? Shall we take a look at the order? So firstly, King John made lots of people in England angry.

So the barons joined their armies together in rebellion, and the barons marched to face King John.

King John had to agree to talk with the barons.

King John and the barons made an agreement.

So well done if you were able to place those events in the correct order and well done for completing that learning task.

We're now ready to move on to the second part of our lesson.

We're going to explore the Magna Carter.

The agreement made by King John and the barons was written down.

The Barron's made King John sign his name at the bottom of the paper.

You see that illustration there of the Barron's making King John sign the agreement.

The written agreement that King John signed is known as Magna Carta, and it is one of the most important agreements ever made.

You see that photo of a copy of the Magna Carta there? Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Magna Carta was an agreement between King John and the barons, between King John and King Richard, between King Richard and the barons.

Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think and press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said Magna Carter was an agreement between King John and the barons, you are correct, well done.

Now the agreement took some power away from the king making him weaker and the barons stronger.

Have a look there at a different of King John being forced to sign Magna Carta.

Now, the king was still more powerful, but he would not be able to treat the people unfairly like he had before.

Magna Carta set out the laws which the king and everyone else had to follow.

It's special because it was the first time that a ruler of England had agreed to follow the same rules as everyone else.

So what laws did King John agree to in Magna Carta? Well, some of the laws that King John agreed to included not making taxes higher for everyone without asking the barons first, and promising not to interfere with the church ever again.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Who is correct about Magna Carter? Izzy says, "Magna Carta made King John less powerful because he agreed to follow the same laws as everyone else." Jacob says, Magna Carta made the barons less powerful because they agreed to follow the same laws as the king.

Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner who is correct about Magna Carta, Izzy or Jacob? And press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said, Izzy is correct, you're absolutely right, well done.

Are the kings and queens that ruled England after John also had to follow the laws of Magna Carta.

Today over 800 years later, we still follow four of the laws from Magna Carta in England.

Magna Carta was so important that copies of it were made and kept in safe places, and you can still go and see a copy of Magna Carta today.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

This statement, King John, had to sign Magna Carta.

Is that true or false? <v ->What do you think?</v> If you said that's true, you're right.

Now, which of these two statements would help to justify your answer? He wanted to follow the laws that the barons wrote down and became less powerful.

He couldn't fight the armies of the barons in their rebellion, so had to agree to talk to them.

Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner to decide which of these two statements would help to justify your answer, and press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said, he couldn't fight the armies of the barons in their rebellion so he had to agree to talk to them, then you are absolutely right, well done.

This brings us to our final learning task.

I'd like you to add labels to this image to explain what Magna Carta was and why King John had to agree to it.

Pause the video here and give yourself enough time to add those labels and press play when you are ready to continue.

How did that go? Shall we take a look at an example? So you might have added, King John couldn't fight against the armies of the barons in their rebellion.

King John had to agree to listen to the barons.

The barons forced King John to sign Magna Carter.

The king had to agree to follow the same laws as everyone else.

Magna Carter made the king weaker and Magna Carta was a list of rules.

Well done for adding those labels and well done for completing that learning task.

Before we finish this lesson, let's summarise what we've learned about King John and Magna Carter.

The barons were so angry with King John's unfair actions that they started a rebellion.

John wasn't strong enough to fight their armies, and so he was forced to accept an agreement called Magna Carter.

In this agreement, John promised to follow the same laws as everyone else.

Magna Carta made King John weaker.

Kings and queens after John followed the laws in Magna Carta and some still exist today in England.

Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.

I hope to see you in the next one.

See you next time.
