Hello, my name is Mrs. Tipping and I'm really looking forward to learning with you today all about significant rulers from the past.

And we're going to explore the question, what can those rulers, what can their stories tell us? So shall we get started? Let's go.

By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to describe Suleiman's attempts to conquer more land for the Ottoman Empire.

Before we start, I would like to introduce you to some keywords.

We'll be using these keywords during the lesson, so it might be a good idea to write these keywords down.

The keywords we'll be using today are Ottoman Empire, Sultan, siege, Vienna.

I'm gonna say those words again and I'd like you to repeat them after me.

Ottoman Empire.

Sultan.

Siege.

Vienna.

Good job.

Now let's think in more detail about what each of these keywords mean by taking a look at their definitions.

The Ottoman Empire ruled over large areas of the Middle East and Eastern Europe for over 600 years.

The leader of the Ottoman Empire was known as the Sultan.

A siege is when an army surrounds a castle or a city to force the people inside to surrender.

Vienna is the capital city of Austria, a country in Europe.

Pause the video here to make a note of these keywords.

And when you are ready to continue, press play.

These are the learning cycles that we'll be working through together in today's lesson, the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman as Sultan.

In the first learning cycle, we will explore the Ottoman Empire.

Suleiman was born in a place called the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottoman Empire was very powerful and ruled over large areas of land in different places around the world, like the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

They ruled these places for over 600 years.

You can see on the map there where Eastern Europe is and where the Middle East is.

That shows the map of the Ottoman Empire.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

The Ottoman Empire ruled over large areas of, and.

So Eastern Australia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East.

So which two fill those gaps? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think and press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said that it's Eastern Europe and the Middle East, you are absolutely right.

Well done.

The leader of the Ottoman Empire was known as a Sultan.

When Suleiman was born, his father was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and his name was Sultan Selim.

You can see an illustration of his father there.

When Suleiman's father died in 1520 CE, Suleiman became the new Sultan.

How many years ago was 1520 CE? Quite a long time ago.

It's around 500 years ago.

And you see that illustration there of Suleiman becoming Sultan.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Suleiman became the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire around 500 years ago, 1000 years ago, or 3000 years ago.

Pause the video here and have a quick discussion with your learning partner.

What do you think? And press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said that Suleiman became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire around 500 years ago, you are right.

Well done.

Now Suleiman wanted to be an even better Sultan than his father, and he decided that he wanted to make the Ottoman Empire even bigger.

And he'd do this by taking over other parts of the world.

So what might Suleiman have wanted to do to make the Ottoman Empire bigger? Hmm.

Well, to do this, he needed a large army 'cause he needed to take over more land, and he needed to do this by fighting and winning wars.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Sultan Suleiman had a plan to rule over more land than his father had.

Is that statement true or false? Hmm, what do you think? It is true.

Now, looking at these two statements, which of these would help to justify your answer? He wanted to do this by losing wars.

He wanted to do this by winning wars.

Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner.

Decide which of these two statements would help to justify your answer and press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said he wanted to do this by winning wars, you are absolutely right.

Well done.

This brings us to our first learning task.

I'd like you to add labels to the image below to describe the Ottoman Empire and Sultan Suleiman.

So pause the video here and give yourself enough time to have a go at adding labels to that image and press play when you are ready to continue.

How did that go? Shall we take a look? So your answers might include, the Ottoman Empire was in charge of large areas of land in different places around the world.

Sultan Suleiman was the leader of the Ottoman Empire around 500 years ago.

Suleiman wanted to make the Ottoman Empire even bigger.

Well done if you were able to add some labels to that image and well done for completing that learning task.

This brings us onto the second part of our lesson.

We're going to explore Suleiman as Sultan.

The first place that Sultan Suleiman and his army successfully took over was Belgrade.

Today this is the capital city of the country known as Serbia.

Can you see Belgrade where that's pointing to on the map of the Ottoman Empire there? The next place that the Sultan and his armies took over was a Greek island called Rhodes.

Take a look at where that's pointing to Rhodes there.

And then the Ottoman Empire, which already ruled over large parts of Hungary, Sultan Suleiman was able to take over even more of Hungary to make the Ottoman Empire even bigger.

So that is one of the third places that they took more land, that the Sultan was able to make the Ottoman Empire bigger.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

Can you add keywords to Sofia's sentence below to complete it? Suleiman and his armies added lots of places to the.

So we've got two gaps, one at the beginning before Suleiman and one at the end.

Which keywords could go in those spaces? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner and press play when you are ready to continue.

How did you get on? Shall we take a look? So the first word is Sultan and the last word is Ottoman Empire.

So Sultan Suleiman and his armies added lots of places to the Ottoman Empire.

Well done if you added in those keywords.

At this time, lots of cities had high walls and gates to protect them from attacks.

Have a look there at that illustration of a city with high walls to keep people out.

And this meant that armies like Suleiman's used a tactic called a siege to attack.

Hmm, siege.

That's one of our keywords.

What is a siege? Well, a siege is when an army surrounds a castle or a city for a long time to force the people inside to eventually give up and surrender.

So they go all the way around it and they stay there for a long time until the people eventually give up or surrender.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

A siege was a tactic used to attack cities with wide rivers, lots of hills, high walls and gates.

Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think and press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said a siege was a tactic used to attack cities with high walls and gates, you are absolutely right.

Well done there.

A very famous siege happened when Suleiman's army tried to attack Vienna, the capital city of Austria.

Suleiman's army was much bigger than the one inside the walls of Vienna.

However, the walls were very strong and the people inside were good at defending themselves.

When Suleiman's armies tried to dig tunnels under the walls, they were blown up to stop them from getting inside.

The people inside the city of Vienna would not give up and surrender.

In the end, the Ottoman army had to give up.

Suleiman's army was running out of food, becoming ill, and getting very cold because there was very heavy snow.

The siege failed because they couldn't surround the city for long enough to get the people inside to surrender.

It was the first time that Sultan Suleiman had lost a battle.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding here.

Who is correct about why Sultan Suleiman's army failed to take over the city of Vienna? Jacob says, Suleiman's army only had wooden weapons to attack Vienna with.

Laura says, Suleiman's army ran out of food supplies and got too cold during the siege.

Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner.

Who is correct about why Sultan Suleiman's army failed to take over the city of Vienna? Is it Jacob or Laura? And press play when you are ready to continue.

What did you think? If you said that Laura's correct, you are right.

Suleiman's army had ran out of food supplies and got too cold during the siege, and that's why they failed to take over Vienna.

Even though Suleiman's armies could not take over Vienna, they were very successful at taking over other land.

Have a look at that illustration of Sultan Suleiman there riding a horse into battle.

They went on to take over more land and cities across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Suleiman was able to make the empire bigger than his father had.

All of those spaces there on that map of the Ottoman Empire that Suleiman ruled over in that orange space, so a rather large empire.

In fact, the Ottoman Empire was the largest in history when Suleiman was the Sultan.

Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.

The Ottoman Empire was the largest in history when Suleiman's father was the Sultan.

Is that true or false? Hmm, what do you think? That is false.

Now looking at these two statements, Suleiman made the Ottoman Empire bigger than it was when his father was Sultan.

Suleiman made the Ottoman Empire smaller than when it was when his father was Sultan.

Which of these two statements would help to justify your answer? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner, and when you're ready to continue, press play.

What did you think? If you said Suleiman made the Ottoman Empire bigger than it was when his father was Sultan, you are absolutely right.

Well done.

This brings us to our final learning task.

I'd like you to describe how Sultan Suleiman made the Ottoman Empire bigger than it had ever been before.

You may want to use these words to help you, armies, siege, Middle East, North Africa, wars, high walls, cities, Europe.

So pause the video here and give yourself enough time to have a go at this learning task, and press play when you are ready to continue.

How did that go? Shall we take a look at an example? So your answer might have included, Sultan Suleiman wanted to make the Ottoman Empire bigger than it had ever been before.

His armies fought lots of wars all over Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East to take over more land.

Cities were often protected by high walls and gates, so they had to use a tactic called a siege to get the people inside to surrender.

Well done if you were able to describe how Sultan Suleiman made the Ottoman Empire bigger than it had ever been before.

Well done for completing that learning task.

Before we finish this lesson, let's summarise what we've learned about Suleiman the general.

Suleiman's father was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire ruled over large areas of the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Suleiman became the new Sultan in 1520 when his father died.

Suleiman took his armies to fight wars and take over more land.

He successfully took over places in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, but failed to take over Vienna during a siege.

The Ottoman Empire was the largest in history when Suleiman was the Sultan.

Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.

I hope to see you in the next one.

See you next time.
