History

In this unit pupils studied the height of the movement and the events that led to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In ‘USA: how did the civil rights movement change after 1965?’ pupils will study the later years of the movement in order to consider how far the 1964 act was the success that many had hoped it would be.

In ‘USA: how did the civil rights movement develop between 1954-60?’ pupils studied the early years of the Civil Rights Movement, and the events that brought key individuals to the spotlight. In this unit, pupils will study the height of the movement in the lead up to the famous 1964 Civil Rights Act.

In this unit, pupils learn about the growing number and diversity of civil rights campaigns in the early 1960s. They learn about sit-ins, the Freedom rides, the peace marches and Freedom Summer, and the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965.
