This unit will form the foundation of knowledge which will later explore the changes in the Atlantic World and the impact of colonisation and the Empire, both on colonies and Great Britain (Y9).

Pupils will understand the concept of the Empire from their previous study of medieval Mali (Y7). Pupils will also understand the growing importance of trade and exploration, through their study of Elizabethan England (Y8).
