Hello, everyone.

How are you today?

I hope you're feeling really good.

My name is Ms. Afzal, and I'll be a teacher for this lesson, which I'm feeling really pleased about.

Today we've got an interesting topic ahead.

We'll be looking at England's first successful American colonies.

This lesson comes from the unitive work "European Conquest of the Americas: Why Was Its Impact So Devastating?

" So if you're ready to get into this quite serious topic, if you've got energy and focus and enthusiasm for this lesson, let's begin our learning now.

The outcome for today's lesson is "I can explain how England's first successful colonists interacted with Native Americans.

" I hope this sounds interesting to you.

We have some keywords in our lesson.

I'd like us to go through them one at a time saying them out loud.

My turn, your turn.

Native American.

Assembly.

Powhatan.

Tensions.

Reservations.

Good to hear those keywords out loud.

Now I'd like you to turn someone and share with them, have you heard of any of these keywords before?

Do you know the meanings of any of these keywords?

Pause here while you share about this.

Thanks for sharing your understanding of those keywords.

Let's find out what they mean.

Native Americans are the original inhabitants of North and South America and the Caribbean Islands.

An assembly is group who meet to make laws for a community.

The Powhatan are a Native American nation who lived in the region which became Virginia.

Tensions are feelings of anger or fear between two groups.

Reservations are areas of land set aside for a community of people to live on.

So these are our keywords, Native Americans, assembly, Powhatan, tensions, and reservations.

Let's look out and listen out for them.

Let's think carefully about these keywords that will be coming up in our lesson today.

Our lesson is called "England's First Successful American Colonies," and it has three learning cycles: "Settling Jamestown," "Support from the Powhatan," and "Tensions with the Powhatan.

" Let's begin by exploring "Settling Jamestown.

" Here's an illustration of the Jamestown colony.

Pause here and share with someone any details you notice from this illustration.

Thanks for sharing.

The first successful English settlement in the Americas was founded at Jamestown.

Initially, it did not look like the colony would succeed.

And here we can see a map of Jamestown and the surrounding region.

Pause here and share with someone any details that stand out for you as you look at this map.

Thanks for sharing.

Let's have a check for understanding.

" Well done if you answered D, the starving times.

This is what colonists at Jamestown called the difficult period from 1609 to 1610.

Let's have another check for understanding.

Starting with the earliest, sort these events into chronological order.

Arrange the letters A to E to indicate your answer.

So here are the events: A.

Virginia Assembly created.

B.

English settlers found Jamestown.

C.

44 out of 104 settlers die.

D.

Tobacco introduced to Jamestown.

E.

Pause here while you sort these events into chronological order.

So how did you get on with sorting those events into chronological order?

This is the correct order, B, C, E, D, A.

Let's read through the events.

English settlers found Jamestown.

44 out of 104 settlers die.

The starving times.

Tobacco introduced to Jamestown.

Virginia Assembly created.

Well done if you sorted the events into this order.

And now it's time for your first task.

I'd like you to complete the timeline by adding in the missing events from England's early settlement at Jamestown.

So begin with the colonists founding Jamestown.

Then I'd like you to fill in what's the event from 1609 to 1610, what happened in March 1614 and then in July 1619.

So pause here while you complete this timeline by adding in the missing events from England's early settlement at Jamestown.

I'll see you when you're finished.

Well done for having a go at that task.

How did you get on with adding in the missing events from England's early settlement at Jamestown onto this timeline?

So the first event, 1609 to 1610, was the starving times.

And then in March 1614, tobacco first sold to Europe.

And in July 1619, the Virginian Assembly was founded.

Well done for having a go at this task.

And now we're onto our next learning cycle, "Support from the Powhatan.

" Indigenous nations also lived in the area around Jamestown.

The Powhatan were the most important Native American nation in the area, and here's an illustration of the Powhatan.

Pause here and share with someone details you notice in this illustration.

Thanks for sharing.

And here alongside the illustration of the Powhatan, we also have an illustration of John Smith meeting the Powhatan.

Pause here and share with someone some details you notice in this illustration.

Thanks for sharing.

Let's have a check for understanding.

True or false?

Colonists at Jamestown did not produce enough food for themselves to start with.

Pause here while you decide, is this statement true or false?

Well done if you selected true.

And now I'd like you to justify your answer by choosing from one of these two statements: A.

The land around Jamestown was not good enough for farming.

B.

Colonists spent most of their time searching for gold rather than farming.

Pause here while you decide which of these statements justifies your earlier answer.

Explain how historians can tell that the statement is accurate.

So pause here while you have a go at this explanation task explaining how historians can tell that the statement "English colonists at Jamestown and the Powhatan were able to cooperate with one another" is accurate.

I'll see you when you finish your task.

So how did you get on with that task of explaining how historians can tell that this statement is accurate?

Here's the statement: "English colonists at Jamestown and the Powhatan were able to cooperate with one another.

" Your explanation may have included something like this.

"Historians can tell that the statement is accurate because the English colonists at Jamestown received critical support from the Powhatan which helped them survive.

For example, in 1607, when Jamestown was suffering from food shortages, the Powhatan provided some of their own crops to help the colonists.

" Well done if you answered in this way.

Well done for having a go at this task.

And now we're onto our final learning cycle, "Tensions with the Powhatan.

" Here's an illustration of the marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe.

Pause here and share with someone some details that you notice in this illustration.

Thanks for sharing what you noticed in this illustration.

Let's have a check for understanding.

How far do you agree with the statement?

Write one or two paragraphs to explain your answer.

Include as many of the following keywords in your answer as possible: Powhatan, tension, reservations.

So pause here while you have a go at this task explaining how far you agree or disagree with the statement "The history of Jamestown after 1609 shows that colonists and Native Americans were able to live together peacefully.

" I'll see you when you're finished.

It's good to be back with you.

How did you get on with that task explaining to what extent you agreed or disagreed with the statement "The history of Jamestown after 1609 shows that colonists and Native Americans were able to live together peacefully"?

Your answer may have included something like this.

"The history of Jamestown does not show that colonists and Native Americans were able to cooperate and live together peacefully.

Although the Powhatan helped English colonists when they ran out of food in 1607, there were also many conflicts between the two groups.

For example, the Powhatan and English fought for 10 years between 1622 and 1632, and many of the Powhatan were forced to live on reservations.

This shows that there was lots of tension between colonists and Native Americans.

" Well done if your explanation looked like this.

Well done for having a go at this task.

In our lesson "England's First Successful American Colonies," we've covered the following: England's first successful colony in the Americas was at Jamestown.

Colonists were initially helped by the local Powhatan nation.

Tension rose between the colonists and Native Americans, leading to multiple conflicts.

Defeat in wars led to the Powhatan being forced onto reservations.

" That was a sad outcome there with the Powhatan being forced onto reservations.

Thank you for joining in with this lesson looking at this period of history and what took place when England first established colonies in America.

It was good to teach you, and I hope that you learned a lot in this lesson.

I look forward to seeing you at another lesson soon.

Bye for now.
