Comparing sets using more or fewer.

Hello, everybody is Miss Sidhu here, and we're going to produce some wonderful math today.

In this lesson, you will be using the vocabulary more and fewer to describe sets of objects or numbers.

Now, let's get started.

Welcome to today's lesson.

Today, we are going to be comparing sets of objects using the vocabulary more and fewer, an independent task and an end of lesson quiz.

You will need a pencil and a paper, and also some pasta pieces to help you to count.

If you haven't got pasta, you can use a different object.

Ooh, here we begin this lesson by looking at the big picture for this unit of addition and subtraction.

You may not have seen this picture before.

Here we have an aunt the spider, her nickname is Spidey, and Turtle.

Can you point to Turtle? And can you see Spidey? They are sharing each other's feasts.

What foods can you see and which ones would you like to eat? I want you to pause the video and have a think, which ones can you see, and which ones would you like to eat.

How did you get on? Which foods have you spotted? Can you say nice and loud after 3? 1, 2, 3.

Well, so many foods.

Hmm.

I can see some cakes with cherries on the top.

They look so yummy.

I can also see some carrots and some potatoes, and some shiny fish and a bowl of soft eggs, and lots of tasty sandwiches.

What a lot of yummy food? Have another look at big picture of Spidey and Turtle's feast.

How many cakes does Spidey have? Can you count them? How many could you see? How many could you see? I can hear lots of different answers.

Now let's have a go at counting the cakes altogether.

Remember we're only counting Spidey's cakes.

So, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.

Spidey has 12 cakes altogether.

Let's say it together.

Spidey has 12 cakes altogether.

Good work.

Can you have a go at counting, how many cakes Turtle has? Is it the same amount as Spidey? Let's find out.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Turtle has eight cakes altogether.

Let's say it again.

Turtle has eight cakes altogether.

Now we have to find out how many cakes Spidey and Turtle have, and we need to decide who has more or fewer.

So if Spidey has 12 cakes and Turtle has eight cakes, which one has more? Super Spidey has more cakes.

Can you say that Spidey has more cakes than Turtle? That means that Turtle has fewer cakes than Spidey.

Can you say that? Turtle has fewer cakes than Spidey.

Super work everyone.

Let's see if we can use this information to find out what the difference is between Spidey and Turtle's cakes.

We know that Spidey has 12 cakes and Turtle has eight cakes, but how many more does Spidey have than Turtle? Here we have cubes representing their cakes, 12 for Spidey and eight for Turtle.

Here it shows us the difference.

There is a difference of 1, 2, 3, 4.

There is a difference of four between Spidey's cakes and Turtle's cakes.

Now you are ready for your independent tasks today.

For today's task, I want you to find out how many carrots and sandwiches Spidey and Turtle have.

So, how many carrots and sandwiches Spidey and Turtle have? And then, who has more sandwiches and who has fewer carrots? Thinking about who has more and fewer sandwiches, and more and fewer carrots.

I want you to pause the video to complete your task and resume once you're finished.

You may want to use the pasta pieces to count up the sandwiches and to count up the carrots, and then you can see which has more and which has fewer.

How did you do? Spidey has 12 sandwiches and Turtle has eight sandwiches.

Turtle has fewer sandwiches than Spidey, and Spidey has more sandwiches than Turtle.

Spidey has four more sandwiches than Turtle, and Turtle has four fewer sandwiches than Spidey.

Spidey has nine carrots and Turtle has 11 carrots.

Turtle has more carrots than Spidey, and Spidey has fewer carrots than Turtle.
