Solving comparison problems, part two.

Hello everybody, my name is Miss Sidhu, and I'm going to be doing some great maths with you today.

In this lesson, you'll be using addition and subtraction strategies to solve some problems. Now, let me see who's ready.

And now, let's get started.

In this lesson, we are going to be creating pictorials for word problems, writing equations to solve word problems, an independent task, and an end of lesson quiz to see everything that we have learned.

You will need a pencil and a paper and a number line to help you to solve the problems. You may need to want to use some objects or some cubes to help you as well.

Now, before we begin the lesson, I want you to select all of the even numbers to warm up our brains.

So, can we all get ready to select all of the even numbers? Are you ready, steady, go! You may want to pause the video if you need extra time.

How did you do? Did you get all of the even numbers? Let's check them.

We've got six, four, eight, two, and 10.

Good job, everybody.

Now let's begin the lesson.

Here, you might have seen in part one we use the cubes to find out how many marbles Jonny and Bella had.

Now, we need to use this information to create both subtraction and addition equations.

So, if Jonny has three more marbles than Bella and if Jonny has nine marbles, how many does Bella have? First we need to count out the marbles, so we can use cubes to show the marbles.

So we need to do our nine marbles.

So we've got one, two three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.

And then now we need to find out how many Bella has.

So we've got our three extra marbles that Jonny has and now we need to figure out how many Bella has.

One, two, three, four, five, six.

Bella has six marbles.

So, Jonny has three more marbles than Bella.

If Jonny has nine marbles, how many does Bella have? So we've got three plus six is equal to nine.

Because Jonny has nine marbles, and Bella has six.

Also, we can do a subtraction equation.

Because I know that Jonny has nine marbles and we know that Jonny has three more marbles, so we've got three as the answer.

And then we need to find out six that Bella has.

So nine minus six is equal to three.

Let's try another one.

Darius has three more marbles than Jasmine.

If Jasmine has nine marbles, how many does Darius have? So let's set out the nine marbles that Jasmine has, can you count with me again? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.

Okay, now we know that Darius had three more than Jasmine.

What should we do? Can you shout it out? Super, we can match the cubes and then we can add three more because Darius has three more marbles.

So let's count nine first.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and now let's add our three more.

One, two, three.

Let's find out how many cubes everybody has.

So, we've got nine cubes that Jasmine has and Darius has nine plus three, so let's put nine in our heads and let's plus the three extra marbles that Darius has.

The nine let's count on our heads, nine, and then we've got 10, 11, 12.

So Darius has 12 cubes.

Great work, everyone.

Now, let's put it into a subtraction and addition equation.

So we've got nine marbles that Jasmine has, and Darius has three more, so nine plus three we said was 12.

And we could also do a subtraction equation by doing 12 marbles, take away the nine marbles that Jasmine has, and then Darius we know has three more marbles.

Using this information, I think you're ready for the independent task today.

For your independent task, I want you to create addition and subtraction equations for this word problem.

Halima has eight marbles, Ben has three fewer marbles than Halima.

How many marbles does Ben have? So do a subtraction and an addition equation.

Pippa has eight marbles.

She has three fewer marbles than Paul.

How many marbles does Paul have? So create an addition and a subtraction equation for this word problem.

You may want to use the cubes or the pictures to help you.

You may want to use a number line to help.

Let's look at the answers.

Halima has eight marbles, Ben has three fewer marbles than Halima.

How many marbles does Ben have? So our subtraction equation, we could have eight minus three is equal to five.

You might also have eight minus five is equal to three.

We've got five plus three is equal to eight or you might have three plus five is equal to eight.

Pippa has eight marbles.

She has three fewer marbles than Paul.

How many marbles does Paul have? We've got 11 minus eight is equal to three.

But you could also have 11 minus three is equal to eight.

For our addition equation, we have eight plus three is equal to 11.

But you could also have three plus eight is equal to 11.
