Hi, mathematicians.

It's me is Miss Charlton and Hedwick and we are very much looking forward to this lesson with you today.

I hope you are as well.

Let's find out what we're doing.

So today we're going to position numbers to 20 on a number line.

We're going to place the numbers on the line, and then we're going to justify our decisions.

That means tell each other why we put the numbers where we've decided to put them.

Then you'll do your independent task and your end of lesson quiz.

Today you're going to need a pencil and some paper and a number line but don't worry because we're actually going to make our own number lines today.

So you can either use the one that's on that's provided for you or we can make it together anyway.

Let's start off with a brain teaser to warm ourselves up.

Now we are going to skip count in twos and we're going to learn a little song for it and it goes like this, ♪ Oak pupils ♪ ♪ Good as gold ♪ ♪ Let me see your fingers roll ♪ ♪ The twos ♪ ♪ Two four six eight 10 ♪ ♪ Aha ♪ ♪ 12 14 16 18 ♪ ♪ 20 22 and 24 ♪ ♪ So nice so nice ♪ ♪ We've got to clap twice ♪ Should we do that again together? And maybe you can join in this time as well.

The numbers are on the screen for you and you're repeat the words as we go along, get your hands ready because we're clapping, ♪ Oak pupils ♪ ♪ Good as gold ♪ ♪ Let me see your fingers roll ♪ ♪ The twos ♪ ♪ Two four six eight 10 ♪ ♪ Aha ♪ ♪ 12, 14, 16, 18 ♪ ♪ 20 22 and 24 ♪ ♪ So nice so nice ♪ ♪ We got to clap twice ♪ Hopefully that will help you learn your two times tables.

Ready for our star words.

Get your hands ready, more than less than before after order Because we're putting numbers in order today on our number line.

we are going to start off making our own number line.

So what you need to do is get your piece of paper and your pen ready and I'm going to make my own number line at the same time as well.

Let me make my screen a little bit bigger for you so you can see it, right? So I need to get my piece of paper ready you can have a pen or a pencil.

I'm going to put Hedwick on her chair because I don't want her to drool on or accidentally or knock her off.

So the first thing that we need to do is draw a straight line all the way across are you ready all the way across.

It doesn't matter if it's not completely straight mine's is a little bit crooked but that's okay.

And then we need to mark on zero 'cause we're starting on zero and then can you put 20 on the other end as well.

So we've got our number line now from zero through to 20 and I haven't yet put the numbers on because I'll show you.

We are going to explore with numbers.

So we're going to try and figure out where the numbers go based on what we know about them.

For example I'm putting 14 all the way over here because it's far away from the two When I count.

Now when we end up with this number line, it's probably going to be a bit crooked and it won't be perfect, but we will have worked out about where the numbers need to be.

So if I know 20 is here then I might put on 10 in the middle just to get me started.

Can you see that 10 there? I'll make it big again so you can see.

And we said that we want to put 14 on the number line.

Now I know that 14 has got one 10 and four ones so it's definitely not towards zero it's definitely towards 20.

So I'm going to put 14 approximately here.

I think 14 would go about there.

Now I think Oh, well if 14 is there 13 13 is one less than 14 because it's got three ones and 14 has got four ones so I know that it needs to be further down the number line so I'm going to put 13 close to it about here.

Now I want you to have a think about different numbers you might want to do.

For example you might like to put the number eight.

Eight, will eight be on this end of the number line or further towards zero.

Well I know that eight is less than 10 but it's definitely more than two and two would be around here so if I put the number two on the number line then eight must be closer to the 10 so eight will be around here.

Now I want you to have a little go at doing that yourself and I'm going to do mine as well and we'll have a little race to see who gets there first putting all of their numbers on the number line and thinking about where they go as you do it.

Are you ready? Let's go.

One 14, 15 comes above 14 so I'll put that one there and then come 16.

And I know that 19 is very close to 20 so I'll put that there.

And then Oh, in between 16 and 19, there's definitely 17 'cause that has seven ones and 18.

My number lines a bit squished but at least it's got my numbers in the correct place.

And then after 10 or one more than 10 is 11 and then one more than that is 12.

I've managed to complete all my numbers from 10 to 20.

Now I just need to do my lower numbers.

Zero, one, two oh I'm good at these ones 'cause I know my numbers to 10 really well I just need to practise my numbers to 20.

One, two, three, four, and one more than four is five.

And now I've got eight on there already after eight comes nine and one lesson eight is seven and then six.

I've completed my number line.

Have you done yours as well? Is a little bit crooked, but it's okay I'll definitely be able to count with it.

Hopefully my reasoning didn't disturb you too much maybe you found it helpful to be able to figure out your numbers as well.

So have we done it? Yes we have.

Looked at that.

We have managed to complete a whole number line all the way to 20.

Let's count together Zero one two three four five six seven eight nine 10, 11, 12, 13 14, 15 16 17 18 19 20 You might actually know some counting songs so you could always sing you're counting songs to go with that.

Now it is time for your independent task.

You are going to use your number line that you've just made to answer these questions.

The first question says, which number comes before 15? So I'll have a look at my number line and I think right well, I need to find a number 15.

You might even put a circle around it to help you so put a circle around the number 15 which number comes before? Before so that must be earlier than it.

Before 15 is 14 and then you can complete the rest of the questions.

Which number comes after 18? Write three numbers less than 11? Now that's a tricky one because you'll find the number 11 and there are lots of numbers that are less than 11 and you can choose any ones that you want so long as they are less.

Write two numbers between 13 and 17? Which number comes first on the number line 16 or 12? And how many jumps are there on the number line between 10 and 15? Go and have a lovely time exploring with your number line and then come back when you're finished and we'll check the answers together.

How did everybody get on? Let's overlook.

So which number comes before 15? Everybody shouts at me 14 Well done.

Which number comes up after 18? 19 Now this one was tricky write three numbers less than 11? When I looked on my number line and all of these numbers were less than 11 one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 and actually I've missed a number off there is there a number that you can think of that I've missed off that? What one less than one? Zero! I've made a mistake, I didn't put zero on so if you've included zero in that, well done you mathematicians you tricked me there.

Write two numbers between 13 and 17? Well on my number line, I know that it goes 13 14 15 16 and then come 17.

So you could have written either 14 15 or 16 because we wanted the numbers between 13 and 17.

Which number comes first on the number line 16 or 12? Well it's number 12.

Why is it number 12? Have a think about the ones.

12 has got two ones.

How many ones to 16 have? Show me with your fingers, six ones, well done.

And how many jumps are that on the number line between 10 and 15? So you should have put your finger on 10 and go 11, 12 13, 14 15 There are five jumps.

You have done an amazing job.

I really loved exploring that number line with you today.

Let's have a think What did we do? Well we needed to put numbers in order on the number line but it wasn't as easy as that because we had to justify say why we had put the numbers where we had.

So we thought about the numbers that we knew for example, we put the number 20 on and then we looked at the numbers that were less than 20.

And then we had a little think about the numbers that were maybe above 10 and numbers that were less than 10 and then we used our reasoning to position them all accurately on the number line.

And we use that number line that we had made our very own mathematical resource to answer some very tricky questions about where number sit on the number line.

Do you think you'd be able to do that Hedwick? I think she would be able to.
