Grouping and counting in tens.

Hello everybody, I'm Miss Sidhu and we're going to be doing some exciting maths with you today.

Today, in this lesson, you will be counting and grouping numbers in tens all the way to 50.

Now let's get started.

Welcome to today's lesson.

And in this lesson we will be counting in tens, grouping amounts in tens, an independent task, and an end of lesson quiz to see everything that we have learnt.

In this lesson, you will need a pencil and a paper to write on and some pasta to help you to count.

But first, I need your help today.

Can you help me by filling in the missing numbers from these number sequences? I want you to pause the video and have a go at filling in the missing numbers.

How did you do? Did you get them all right? You've got 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

The next one, we have, you can count with me.

32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41.

And the last sequence we've got 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and finally 35.

Now let's see what we have got today.

Here is our big picture of Jack and the Beanstalk and the giant.

Have a look at the giant.

The giant is counting his money.

To make it quick and easy for him to count all of his golden coins, the giant is counting in tens.

Now let's practise counting in tens to help the giant, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.

Do you think we can say even quicker? Let's do it nice and fast.

Are you ready, set, go.

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.

Wow, that was super fast.

Great counting everybody.

We're going to be using that for today's lesson.

Let's have a go at counting in tens using a beads string.

It's important to know what 10 looks like.

Here we have 10 red beads, and if you have some pasta at home you can count out 10 pieces to match my beads.

So there we've got 10.

Now, here we have 20 beads now.

Can you count out 20 pieces of pasta? You can pause the video at any time if you want to take longer to count your pasta, or if you've got any other item to count.

Now let's see what 30 would look like on our beads string.

30, so we've got 10, 20, 30.

Hmm, what would come next? Let's see if you're right.

So 10, 20, 30, 40.

And what would come next? 50, so we've got 50 on our beads string.

50, so we've got 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, good work.

Here we have 50 beads on my bead string.

How many lots of 10 are there? Now let's count them.

We have one lot of 10, two lots of 10, three lots of 10, four lots of 10, five lots of 10.

There are five lots of 10.

Let's say altogether.

There are five lots of 10.

This time we have got some pennies.

Here we have 10 pennies.

And if we're counting in tens, hmm, what would come next? You're right, 20 comes next.

And when are we counting in tens what number would come after 20? So we've got 10, 20, 30, super.

And what are the last two numbers then, hmm? 40, and the last one? 50, great work.

Here we've got a number pattern.

What comes next in this number pattern? How do you know? You may want to pause the video to have a look at the number pattern.

If not, you can just carry on.

Were you correct? The answer is 40.

So you've got 10, 20, 30, 40.

Let's have a go at another number pattern.

Here we've got another missing number in our number pattern.

I think you've been doing some super counting in tens.

I think you're ready for today's independent task.

For your task today you need to find the missing number in this sequences.

Let's see if you remember them.

Then you can move on to your next activity.

For this task, I want you to count how many groups of tens there are and how many there are altogether.

And for the next task, counter how many groups of tens there are, and then how many there are altogether.

And finally, a challenge.

Can you create your own tens pattern? I want you to pause the video to complete your tasks for today and then resume once you're finished so we can look at the answers.

Here are the answers to the missing numbers in the sequence.

Did you get all of them correct? And how many groups of 10 beads are there? There are two groups of 10, which equals 20 beads.

And how many groups of 10 are there? There are three groups of 10, which equal to 30 beads.

Can you make your own tens pattern? Here I've had a go and I've made my pattern.

You may have the same tens pattern or you may have something different, but make sure you check that they're going up in tens or you might've even gone backwards in tens.
