And my talk partner Hedwig, already wants more maths.

I wonder if you got your talk partner ready as well? Let's find out what we're going to be learning about today.

So, we are going to recognise and describe repeating patterns.

We'll go through the repeating patterns and then we're going to identify the missing parts in the patterns.

So, a little bit like detectives and see if we can figure out what the missing part is.

And then you're going to do your independent task and check the answers with me.

Today, you will need a pencil and some paper to be able to draw the patterns or use the ones that I provided.

Now let's get ourselves warmed up with a brain teaser, switch on those mathematical brains.

Now, I wonder if anyone can remember what ordinal numbers are? I'm going to start you off and then I want to see if you can label the runners on the track with the ordinal numbers.

So, this one here, this runner is in first place.

First is an ordinal number.

Do you think you can have a look and think about the other ones there? Hmm.

First.

Let's go through them, shall we? Are you ready? First, second, third, fourth, fifth.

Those are ordinal numbers! Let's check our star words.

Get your hand ready! Hands up star words.

Re-pea-ting, pat-tern, po-si-tion, we'll need to use those words in today's lesson.

Hmm, I can see that we've got some lots of different visual circles.

And we need to see if we can figure out what the pattern is.

Now, it's put a good question mark there.

So it's asking us, which one is the next shape in the pattern? Is it the yellow circle or the green circle? So we're going to go through and check the colours to see if we can spot any pattern.

Let's go through the colours together.

Are you ready? Let's point at that first one.

Purple, red, yellow, green, red, purple, hmm? Is there a pattern, there in the colours? Not really, they all seem to be a bit jumbled up, don't they? Purple, red, yellow, green, red, purple.

I don't spot any pattern there.

I couldn't figure out what could come next.

Hmm, so is it a shaped pattern then? Well, I can see there's a circle, and then another circle, and then another circle.

So they're all circles.

So it's not a colour pattern, and it's not a shape pattern.

But what do you notice? Well, the first circle is quite small isn't it? And then the next is bigger.

And then we've got a small one and a bigger one, a small one, a bigger one.

Let's go through that.

Let's start from the first one.

Are you ready? Small circle, big circle, small circle, big circle, small circle, big circle.

So, the next one must be a.

small circle! It doesn't matter what colour it is, because it's not a colour pattern.

And we know that it needs to be a circle because all of the shapes are circles.

So, the pattern here is the size of the shapes! What about this one? Let's check the colours again first to be sure.

Blue, blue, green, blue, blue, ooh? I think I might spot a pattern there! Blue, blue, green, blue, blue.

green! Yes! The next one will be green.

But what will it be? Hmm? Let's go through the shapes.

Circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle, ooh? Circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle.

triangle! Let's see.

Does that fit nicely? We've got a big blue circle, a little blue circle, a green triangle, big blue circle, little blue circle, triangle.

So, this pattern is a colour pattern, it's a shape pattern as well! All of those! Now this one is a little bit trickier, but why is it trickier? Now this time, the question mark is at the start of the pattern, not at the end of the pattern.

So, we need to try and think backwards to see what that missing part might be.

Let's start by going through the colours again, as we did before: yellow, red, blue, blue, yellow, hmm? Is there an obvious colour pattern there? Yellow, red, blue, blue, yellow.

There's nothing that really stands out, is there? We couldn't be sure what the next colour would be.

What about the shapes? Oh, we know all about shapes don't we? We know that these shapes must be rectangles, because they've got four sides, four vertices, and two sides longer than the other two.

So, we've got all of them as rectangles.

So, could it be a shape pattern? No.

So, it's not a colour pattern, it's not a shape pattern, but what do we notice? We've got a rectangle that's lying flat and a rectangle standing up.

And then we've got a rectangle le-aning to the side.

Can you see that? Flat rectangle, standing rectangle, leaning rectangle.

And then the next one is flat rectangle, standing rectangle.

So, the shape that would come after that is a-? Leaning rectangle.

But our question is which shape comes first? So, I can see that the first shape that we know is a flat, yellow rectangle.

So, let's look at the next flat rectangle.

It's a blue one.

Which shape comes before that flat rectangle? It's a- leaning rectangle.

So, the shape that comes before the flat rectangle, is a leaning rectangle.

Shall we try that? Look, leaning rectangle, flat rectangle, standing rectangle, leaning rectangle, flat rectangle, standing rectangle.

We've created a pattern, a pattern of position.

Now, the only thing we can't be sure of, is exactly what colour it needs to be, because we know that it's not a colour pattern.

It's not a colour pattern.

It's not a shape pattern.

It's a position pattern.

Leaning, flat, standing, leaning, flat, standing.

That was such a tricky one everyone, but we managed to get there in the end.

I think we need a celebration! Shall we have a roller coaster clap? Are you ready? This is a roller coaster and we go chooka, chooka, chooka, chooka, woo, woo, woo! Do you want to have a go at that? Well done! Let's see if we got another tricky pattern ahead of us.

Oh, we've got another tricky one.

What is tricky about this one, hmm? Well this one the question mark is in the middle of the pattern.

So we've got to try and spot what it could be? Let's do what we did before, and first of all we'll check the colours.

Are you ready to check the colours with me? Yellow, pink, green, pink, yellow.

Hmm? Is there a clear colour pattern there? Would we be able to figure out what colour that missing one is? Not really.

Yellow, pink, green, pink, yellow- not really sure what it could be.

So, now let's check the shapes.

Ah, I know That those shapes are- Can you shout it at the screen? Triangles! Well done! It's a triangle, because, it's got three straight sides, and three vertices.

So, those are triangles.

So, let's see if it's a shape pattern.

Triangle, triangle, triangle, triangle, triangle.

Oh, they're all triangles.

So is it a shape pattern? No, we know that that missing part must be a triangle, because they're all triangles.

So, we don't know what colour it is.

And we know it needs to be a triangle.

But what do you notice about that pattern? It's not the positioning of it, they're not different, different, different positions.

They're all pointing downwards, aren't they? But what I can't see is that we've got, a fat triangle, and then a thin triangle, and a fat triangle, a fat triangle, a thin triangle.

Let's see, fat, hmm, thin, fat, fat, thin, hmm? So what could the missing one be? Let's have a look.

What comes next to those two fat triangles there? Ah, they're side-by-side.

So, the missing one must be another one like this.

Fat triangle, fat triangle, thin triangle, fat triangle, fat triangle, thin triangle.

That was a bit of a tongue twister for me! Now, do we know what colour it could be? No, we're not sure are we, because it's not a colour pattern.

But we've managed to figure out the right positioning of that triangle.

Well done! Now, it's your turn to get jazzy with these shapes.

We've got lots of different shape patterns here or colour patterns, and you need to see if you can figure out what the missing ones might be.

Remember to use the technique that we've used before.

Check the colours.

Check the shape.

And check the position of the shapes.

You need to use these questions, to see if you can think through what it might be.

So, describe the pattern, and draw the missing shape.

How do you know what the missing shape is? What's the same about each pattern and what is different? Just like we've been talking through.

On the second one along, we had to figure out the shape in the middle.

And that was a blue rectangle.

And then in the bottom one, we've got a missing circle.

Well, we had a great time exploring different patterns.

We had to look to see if it was a colour pattern, and we had to look to see if it was a shape pattern or a position pattern.

And we noticed that there were similarities and differences.

Then we identified the missing one in the pattern, by using all of that knowledge that we had learned before.
