Reading and writing the time to half past.

Hello everybody, It's Miss Sidhu here, and we're going to produce some wonderful maths.

In today's lesson, we'll be learning all about reading and writing and telling the time to half past.

You might already remember some of our knowledge or knowledge that you might've done before about o'clock as well.

So make sure you get your clocks ready.

Welcome to today's lesson.

Today we're going to look at understanding what half pass means, reading the time for half past, an independent task with the answers and end of lesson quiz of everything that we have learned.

In today's lesson, you would need a pencil and a paper and a clock.

If you haven't got a block you can use one online by asking an adult to help you, or you can even make one yourself.

There are times in the video, you might need to pause to have a go at some of the activities yourself.

Now, let's get started.

I thought it would be a good idea to recap some of the numbers and to make sure that we have a secure knowledge with some numbers within 20 which will help and support you when telling the time.

So when I show you the number, I'll say it first and then you can say after, or if you already know them you can say them with me.

Are you ready? Set, go.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12.

Those are all the numbers that we're going to be looking at on our clock face as well.

Now let's have a look at these clocks.

What is the same and what is different? I want you to pause the video and have a look.

Pause and freeze, macaroni cheese.

Did you have a closer look? Well, when looking at these two clock faces, there's one thing that stands up to me and that's where the minute is pointing.

On one clock, so this clock, the minute hand is pointing to the number 12 which means this is showing an o'clock time.

On the other clock, the minute hand is pointing to the number six which means half past the hour.

So one clock is showing six o'clock and the other clock is showing half past one.

This lesson is all about understanding and reading the time to half past.

Now let's give it a go.

Before we have a go at some of the half past times on the teacher clock, I want you to quickly recap the hands on the clock face and their names.

The hour hand is the smaller hand on the clock face.

And on our clocks, the hour hand is always red, but on your clock, it might be a different colour.

Also, on our clock face, we have the minute hand.

On our clocks, the minute hand is always blue and is bigger than the hour hand.

For half past, the minute hand will be on the number six.

So here, I have my clock.

The minute hand is on the six.

That means we know it is half past.

The hour hand has just gone past three, it hasn't gotten to four yet.

So it's just gone past three.

And because we've said it's half past, so it's half past three.

Can you say it with me, half past three.

Here I've got a another clock.

The minute hand is on six, that means it's half past.

And the hour hand has just gone past seven, it's in between the two numbers, is in between seven and eight.

And because it's just gone past seven, we say half past seven.

Now, I've got another clock.

What can you tell me about the minute hand? The super it's half past.

So we know it's half past and what has it, just gone past the hour? It's just gone past two because it hasn't gone to three yet.

Just gone past two.

So we say half past two.

Can you say that with me? Half past two, super.

You might have one to have a go at some of the clocks at home.

Now let's find out what time the clock face is showing.

The minute hand is pointing to the number six, which means half past.

Can you say half past? My time first, half past.

Great work.

So when the minute hand is pointing to the number six, hour hand will be in between two numbers just like you've just seen in the teacher clocks that I showed you.

This time, it is showing half past eight because it is half an hour past eight o'clock.

The hour hand is just gone past eight, it's between eight and nine.

And because it hasn't gone to nine yet, we say half past eight, half past eight.

Great job everybody.

Now, what time does this clock face show? See if you can have a go and then tell me nice and nod so I can hear you.

Can you tell me the time the clock face is showing? Thinking about what time the hour hand has just gone past? Wow, I had so many of you.

Great work, I'm very impressed and lots of you are right.

The minute hand is pointing at the number six which means it is half past and the hour hand has gone past the 10, but not the 11 yet.

So it is reading half past 10, super work everyone.

I think we are ready for today's independent tasks today.

For your task today, you need to write the time on the line that each clock face is showing.

All the times are half past times.

So looking at the boy, he gets up at something time in the morning.

He walks to school at, and he goes to bed at what time at night? Reading the times on the clock carefully, remember all the times are half past times.

I want you to pause the video to complete your task and resume once you have finished.

Now, let's look at the answers.

He gets up half past seven in the morning.

He walks to school at half past nine and he goes to bed at half past seven at night.
