In this lesson, we will be explaining that a whole can be represented by a group of objects.

Do you know what these words mean? So the first one is whole.

This means that we've got the whole object or a whole group of objects.

We've got all of it.

There are none missing.

You could make a big circle with your hands to show that you have got the whole.

Then we've got part.

You could make a small part with your fingers to show that we have not got the whole.

We've just got a part of the whole.

We have not got all of it.

Some of it is missing.

Then we've got group.

This means that we've got a set of objects.

Then we've got whole group.

This means you've got the whole of your set of objects.

So look out for these keywords in today's lesson.

Here's the lesson outline for today.

We will explain that a whole can represent a group of objects.

So in the first part of the lesson, we will look at whole groups of objects in containers or boxes.

So we'll be putting objects into boxes to make a group.

Then we will be looking at whole groups of objects that are not in a container or not in a box.

Let's start on the first part of the lesson.

Here are some children that are going to help us in today's lesson.

We've got Sam and Alex.

Here, we've got a whole.

We've got a whole group of eggs.

A whole can represent a group of objects.

Sam said, "None of the eggs are missing." Can you see, we've got the whole group.

We have got all of the eggs.

"This is a whole group of eggs because I have all of them.

None are missing." A whole can represent a group of objects.

Here we've got a group of cakes in a cake tray.

Alex said, "None of the cakes are missing.

This is a whole group of cakes because I have all of them.

None are missing." A whole can represent a group of objects.

Here we've got a box of sweets.

Sam said, "None of the sweets are missing.

This is a whole group of sweets because I have all of them.

None are missing." A whole can represent a group of different objects.

So here we've got some eggs.

They don't all look the same.

They're all a bit different, aren't they? But we've still got the whole group of eggs.

This is a whole group of eggs.

Even though the eggs are not all the same, a whole can represent a group of different objects.

Here, we've got some different cakes in the cake tray, but we've got all of them.

None of them are missing.

This is a whole group of cakes, even though the cakes are not all the same.

If part of a whole group is missing, it is not whole.

Here we've got some cakes missing.

Alex noticed some of the cakes are missing from the tray.

Here we've got a box of sweets, but some of them are missing.

Sam said, "Some of the sweets are missing.

This is not a whole group of sweets because we do not have them all.

Here's a task for you to have a go at.

We've got some pictures here of some whole groups and not whole groups of sweets, eggs and cakes in their boxes.

Can you sort the cards into whole group or not whole group, and you could try this with some real objects as well.

See if you can find some whole groups or not whole groups and think about how do you know? Here's the second part of your task.

Can you make some whole groups of eggs or cakes? And can you make some not whole groups of eggs or cakes? So you could cut out the pictures and put them in the boxes to make a whole group and a not whole group, or you could try with some real objects.

How did you get on with your task? Did you sort the cards correctly? So I found some whole groups of sweets, eggs and cakes and I put them all along the top and I know that they are whole groups because I can see all of them.

Then I found some not whole groups of cakes, sweets and eggs, and I put them along the bottom and I know that they are not whole groups because they are not all there.

There are some missing.

How did you get on with that one? How did you get on with the second part of your task? How did you make some whole groups of eggs or cakes and some not whole groups of eggs or cakes? Can you see my examples there? I've got not a whole group of eggs and not a whole group of cakes, and I can see that some of them are missing from my cakes, and for my eggs, I've put some cakes in there as well.

So there's a mixture of eggs and cakes, so it is not a whole group of eggs.

Then I found a whole group of eggs and a whole group of cakes and I've got them over the other side.

How did you get on with that one? Let's move on to the second part of the lesson.

We will be looking at whole groups of objects and these ones are not in a box or a container.

Sam has six cars.

Is this the whole group of Sam's cars? Let's count them to check.

Can you count them with me? One, two, three, four, five, six cars.

Yes, Sam said "this is my whole group." How do you know? That's right.

There are six cars in the group.

None are missing.

Alex has four cars.

Is this the whole group of Alex's cars? Let's count them to check.

Can you count them with me? One, two, three, our cars.

Yes, Alex said, "This is my whole group." How do you know? That's right.

There are four cars in the group.

None are missing.

All of them are there, aren't they? So that's the whole group.

Here are Alex and Sam's groups of cars.

Can you see Sam's group of six cars and Alex's group of four cars? Are these both whole groups of cars? Yes they are.

We've got Sam's whole group of six cars and we've got Alex's whole group of four cars.

Does it matter that there is a different number of cars in each group? No.

Sam has got the whole group and Alex has got the whole group.

Sam said, "This is my whole group" and Alex said, "This is my whole group." Sam and Alex do not have the same number of cars, but they are both whole groups.

Sam has 10 apples.

Is this the whole group of Sam's apples? Should we count them to check? Can you count them with me? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight apples.

Is this the whole group of Sam's apples? No.

Sam said, "This is not my whole group." How do you know? That's right.

There were only eight apples, so some of the apples are missing.

How many more apples does Sam need to make a whole group of 10 apples? Let's count them and check.

We had one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight apples.

Let's give Sam another apple.

That's nine apples.

Let's give Sam one more apple.

Now we're up to 10 apples.

Sam needs two more apples to make the whole group.

Alex has eight oranges.

Is this the whole group of Alex's oranges? Let's count them and check.

One, two, three, four, five oranges.

Is this the whole group of Alex's oranges? No, this is not my whole group.

How do you know? That's right, there were only five oranges instead of eight, so some of the oranges are missing.

How many more oranges does Alex need to make a whole group of eight oranges? Let's count them to check.

One, two, three, four, five oranges.

Six, seven, eight.

How many more oranges did we give Alex? That's right.

Alex needs three more oranges to make the whole group.

Is this the whole group of Sam's fruit? Sam said, "I have five pieces of fruit in my whole group." Pause the video and think about this one.

There are only four pieces of fruit, so some are missing.

That's right.

Here's a task for you to have a go at.

Can you draw Sam and Alex's whole groups of cars? So Sam said, "I have six cars in my whole group." Alex said, "I have eight cars in my whole group." Can you draw the cars for Sam and Alex and you could say the stem sentence.

This is the whole group of cars because I have all of them.

Here's the second part of your task.

Can you draw Sam and Alex's whole groups of cars? Sam said, "I have more than five cars in my whole group." Alex said, "I have fewer than eight cars in my whole group." How many cars could be in the whole group of cars and is there more than than one possible answer? Here's the third part of your task.

Can you find your own examples of whole groups and not whole groups? So you could make a collection or draw or take some photos of your whole groups of objects and your not whole groups.

And think about how do you know? So pause the video and have a go at your tasks.

How did you get on with your first task? I asked you to draw Sam and Alex's whole groups of cars.

So Sam had six cars and Alex had eight cars.

Did you draw the whole groups of cars and how do you know? Sam said, "This is the whole group of cars because I have all of them, none are missing." And Alex said, "This is the whole group of cars because I have all of them and none are missing." How did you get on on the second part of your task? We asked you to draw the cars for Sam and Alex.

This time Sam had more than five cars.

I've drawn six cars.

Could you have drawn a different amount? Yes, you could have drawn lots of cars in there, as long as there are more than five cars.

There are lots of different answers for that one.

And Sam said, "This is the whole group of cars because I have all of them.

There are none missing.

There are more than five cars." Then for Alex's cars we had to draw fewer than eight cars, so we had to have a smaller amount than eight.

I've drawn five cars for Alex.

How do we know it's the whole group? "This is the whole group of cars because I have all of them.

None are missing.

There are fewer than eight cars." Five is less than eight.

Are there any other possible answers? Yes, Alex could have had seven cars or six cars or five cars or four cars or three cars or two cars or one car or even no cars.

They're all less than eight, aren't they? How did you get on on the third part of your task? Did you find your own examples of whole groups and not whole groups of objects? There are lots of things that you might have found.

I found a whole bunch of grapes and a whole box of bricks and a whole box of pencils.

What did you find then? I found some not whole groups and I found not a whole bunch of grapes because I've eaten some of them, and I found not a whole box of bricks because I've taken some out to play with them.

Then I found not a whole box of pencils because I've taken some out and I've been using them.

What objects did you find and how do you know that they are a whole group or a not whole group? Well done, we've got to the end of our lesson.
