Hello, my name is Mrs. Winfield and I'm so excited to be learning with you today.
Today's lesson is called Counting Forwards and Backwards within 10.
Now, I know you may have had some practise of this before, but by the end of today's lesson I want to make sure you feel really confident counting forwards and backwards within 10 saying the number words in sequence.
Let's take a look at the keywords we will be using today to help us do this.
We have the word count, my turn, count, your turn.
We are going to be looking at what it really means to count as we explore numbers within 10 in this unit.
And to do that we need the words one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and 10.
We are going to be counting forwards, my turn, forwards, your turn.
Yes, we are going to be counting forwards to 10 and we are going to be counting backwards, my turn, backwards, your turn.
We are going to be counting backwards from 10.
In today's lesson we have two learning cycles.
In the first, as we've spoken about, we are going to be counting forwards to 10 and backwards from 10, and in the second learning cycle we are going to be doing so from any number within 10.
Are you ready for the challenge? I most certainly am.
Before we begin, let's meet some of the key characters who are going to be helping us with our learning today and in the rest of this unit.
Let's say hi to Lucas, Laura, Alex, Aisha, jun and Izzy.
I know they're waving hi back.
Let's begin, when we count forwards to 10, the order of the numbers always stays the same.
Let's take a look at this together.
We start our count at one and together we count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and 10.
And something important to remember is that when we count forwards to 10, the order never changes.
Let's try this again, but this time I wonder if we can count forwards to 10 slowly.
Are we ready? We start our count at one and we count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and 10.
Now if you found it tricky to do it slowly, I'm sure you're going to find it much easier to do it quickly.
I wonder who can be the quickest, you or me, are we ready? We start our count at one and we count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
Oh my goodness, I wonder who was the quickest then.
Okay, now let's try counting forwards to 10 in a loud voice.
Let's turn our volumes right up.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
Oh, I wonder if you are louder than me.
Now this is one I'd much prefer.
I'm going to turn my volume right down and I'm going to count forwards to 10 in a quiet voice.
Are you ready, can you try it with me? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, well done.
Now to check that you have understood everything we have talked about so far, I would like you to continue this count.
Remember, we start our count at one and we count one, two, three.
Well done if you counted one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, you counted forwards through from one to 10, well done.
We may make mistakes now counting, but that's okay.
If we say a number out of order, we can simply correct ourselves.
Let's take a look at this example together.
I want you to listen really carefully to me and see if you can spot where I say a number words out of order.
Are you ready? We start our count at one and we count one, two, three, four, five, seven, six, eight, nine, 10.
Hmm, now that didn't quite sound right, did it? I'm going to count through one more time and let's see if we can spot it this time.
One, two, three, four, five, seven, six, eight, nine, 10.
That's right, seven doesn't come after five, does it? But that's okay because we can simply correct ourselves.
Are you ready? We start our count at one and we count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
You're right, six does come after five in the order of our count.
We might even miss a number in our count, and if we do so we can correct ourselves.
Let's take a look at this example together.
Remember, listen carefully and see if you can spot the number that has been missed in this count.
One, two, three, four, five, six, eight, nine, 10.
Hmm, that didn't quite sound right, did it? Let's listen one more time.
One, two, three, four, five, six, eight, nine, 10.
Yes, you are right.
I've missed a number between six and eight.
Can you remember what number that is? (gasps) Ah, we're right.
Now let's correct ourselves.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
You're right, seven comes after six in our count.
Now once again, let's check you have understood everything we have talked about so far.
Lucas is here and Lucas is counting.
He would like you to tell him what the next number in his count is.
He starts his count at one and he counts one, two, three, four, five.
Hmm, is the next number in his count five, six or seven? Pause the video for a moment and take time to just think.
Remember, start your count at one and count.
Did you find six to be the right answer? Yes, one, two, three, four, five, six.
Six is the next number in Lucas's count, well done.
Let's look at counting backwards from 10.
When we count backwards from 10, the order of the numbers always stays the same.
We start our count at 10 and together we count 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one.
And what's that important thing we must remember? Yes, the order never changes.
Now let's count backwards from 10, but this time let's count backwards slowly and I'm wondering if we can count even slower than when we were looking at counting forwards to 10.
Are you ready? We start our count at 10 and we count 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one.
Well done, and for those who much prefer this, we're going to try and count even quicker this time.
In fact, let's see who can be the quickest, are we ready? Counting backwards from 10, we start our count at 10 and we count 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
Oh, that was very quick.
Okay, I wonder if we can turn our volumes up once again and count backwards from 10 in a loud voice.
Are we ready? We start our count at 10 and we count 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
And for those that much prefer this, we're going to turn our volumes right down and we're going to count backwards from 10 in a quiet voice.
Are you ready? We start our count at 10 and we count 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
Ah, I feel very calm now, do you feel calm? We've reached another check.
Let's see if you can continue the count.
We start our count at 10 and we count 10, nine, eight.
Did you count backwards from 10? If you counted at 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, then I think you are really understanding everything we have talked about so far.
Now just like when counting forwards to 10, we may make mistakes in our counting backwards from 10, but it's okay.
If we say a number out of order, we can simply correct ourselves.
As before, I want you to listen very carefully and see if you can spot which number words are said out of order in this count.
We start our count at 10 and we count 10, eight, nine, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
Now straight away, that didn't quite feel right.
Let's listen one more time.
10, eight, nine, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
Ah, eight doesn't come after 10 when counting backwards from 10, eight and nine were said out of order but we can correct ourselves.
We start our count at 10 and we count 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
If we miss a number in our count, again, we can correct ourselves.
Listen carefully one final time and see if you can see the number word that is missed from this count.
10, nine, eight, seven, five, four, three, two, one.
Hmm, that didn't quite sound right.
Let's listen one more time.
10, nine, eight, seven, five, four, three, two, one.
Ah yes, you are right.
Seven or five does not come after seven.
We've missed the number six, but let's correct ourselves.
10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
That sounds right.
This time Laura is here for our check and she wants to know whether you can find the next number in her count.
She starts her count at 10 and she counts 10, nine, eight, seven, six.
Is the next number in her count six, is it five or is it four? Pause the video one moment and have a think about that.
Remember she starts her count at 10 and counts 10, nine, eight, seven, six.
Do you think five? Well done, remember, if she's counting backwards from 10, the next number in her count would be five.
10, nine, eight, seven, six, five.
Five is the next number in her count.
Now we have a task to try with a partner that will hopefully make sure you feel confident counting forwards to 10 and backwards from 10.
Now like us, Alex and Aisha have been counting slowly, quickly, in a loud voice and in a quiet voice.
They want to know whether you can show them a different way to count and they want to know whether you can do so when counting forwards to 10 and backwards from 10.
I want you to think how many different ways can you use your voice? Can you add any actions? Can you count whilst moving? Pause the video now and see just how many different ways you can count forwards to 10 and backwards from 10 and be ready to show and share your ideas with Alex and Aisha.
What did you find? You may have found that you can count forwards to 10 in a squeaky voice.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
I tried my squeakiest voice there.
You may have tried counting backwards from 10, but whilst clapping (gasps), 10, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
That's quite tricky because your brain has to think about saying the number names in order and clapping at the same time, so well done if you manage to do that well.
So now we are onto our second learning cycle.
We are going to continue counting forwards and backwards, but this time from any given number so we're not always going to count forwards from one or backwards from 10.
Are you ready for the challenge? We can count forwards to 10 starting with any number within 10.
Let's look at this example where we start our count at five.
We start our count at five and we count five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
This shows we can start our count anywhere within 10.
We don't always have to start our count at one.
There was something really important I asked you to remember earlier that we must not forget here also, can you remember what it is? Yes, the order never changes.
Even if we start our count at a different number within 10, the order still stays the same.
Let's try beginning our count at different numbers, remembering that the order always stays the same.
Let's start our count at three and count three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
How about starting our count at five and counting five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10? Or even starting our count at eight and counting, eight, nine, 10.
Let's check that you feel happy counting forwards from any number within 10.
Continue this count.
We start our count at two and we count two.
How did that feel? Did you count two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10? If you did, fantastic.
If not, you can rewind back through this video and try counting from some of the given numbers in the last example.
We can also count backwards within 10 starting with any number.
Let's take a look at this example where we start our count at five gain.
We start our count at five and we count five, four, three, two, one.
And just as before, what do we need to remember? Yes, the order never changes.
Let's try counting backwards from different numbers within 10 together.
How about this time we try three? We start our count at three and we count three, two, one.
Three, two, one, that's a countdown I'm sure you've heard adults use lots.
How about we start our count at five? We start our count at five and we count five, four, three, two, one.
I've also heard that countdown lots used by adults before.
Shall we try one more? Let's start our count at nine.
We start our count at nine and we count nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
Remember, that order never changes.
Let's check that we feel happy counting backwards within 10, continue this count.
We start our count at six and we count six.
How did that feel? Did you count six, five, four, three, two, one? If you did, fantastic.
Let's move to the next step in our learning.
Aisha and Alex are back with a task for you to try together with a partner.
They have set up accounting game.
Aisha is going to choose a number to start their count.
I wonder what number she might choose.
Ah, three, and Alex is going to choose to count forwards or backwards within 10.
What do you think he's going to choose? Forwards, so together they are going to continue their count from three counting forwards.
What might that look like? Hmm, they start their count at three and they count three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10.
You now try this together with a partner.
First I want you to label yourselves A and B.
Jun and Izzy are here to model this beautifully.
Jun is A and Izzy is B partner.
A must choose a number to start the count.
Hmm, Jun could choose from any number within 10 and partner B is going to choose to count forwards or backwards.
Together, you are going to continue your count.
I wonder how many different ways you can find to count forwards and backwards from different numbers within 10.
Let me know how you get on.
Welcome back, you may have counted five backwards, in which case you would've started your count at five and you would've counted five, four, three, two, one.
After that task, I hope you are feeling much more confident about counting forwards and backwards from any given number within 10.
Let's take a look at our summary of counting forwards and backwards within 10, which tells us what we should feel confident in knowing after today's lesson.
When we count forwards to 10, the order never changes and when we count backwards from 10, again, the order never changes.
We can start our count forwards or backwards from any number within 10.
Thank you for joining me, Mrs. Winfield, in today's lesson.
I really hope you look forward to joining in with lesson two in this unit where you will look to develop your counting skills even further.
