To bring two or more numbers together and find out how many.

Count means to say the number names in order and to count a set to find out how many there are.

A number word is the word we say for that number, so the number word for 2 is two.

A group is a collection of objects or images.

In this unit pupils will review their knowledge from the EYFS with counting to and from 10. They will compare and order numbers to 10 practically and will consider the role of zero to represent nothing. In the future unit pupils will  consolidate counting to 20 and back. They will secure their understanding of the teens numbers and their understanding of these numbers in an ordinal context

In prior learning, pupils will have learnt to count confidently and have developed a deep understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships between them and the patterns within those numbers. In this unit pupils will review their knowledge from the EYFS with counting to and from 10, comparing and ordering numbers to 10 and considering the role of zero.

Counting, recognising and comparing numbers 0 - 10

Count the apples. Start your count where the finger is pointing. What is the number word you use to tag the last apple?

Count the pens. Start your count wherever you like. What is the number word you use to tag the last pen?

I tagged every object. The number word I used to tag the last object was nine. Which group of pens was I counting?

Count the leaves. How many leaves are there altogether?

Look at the picture. Which numeral shows us how many bananas there are altogether?

Count forwards from 1. What will the next number in the count be?

Count forwards from 3. What will the next number in the count be?

Count forwards from 6. What will the next number in the count be?

If we miss a number in our count, we can correct ourselves. Count forwards from 1. Which number is missing?

If we say the numbers in the wrong order, we can correct ourselves. Say each count. Which one is correct?
