Hello, everybody.

My name is Mrs. Johnson.

I am here to help you with some of our maths learning today.

I hope you are ready to do some hard work and have lots of fun.

Let's have a look at what we are going to be learning today.

Today's lesson is called ordinal numbers and it's from our unit counting, recognising and comparing numbers one to 10.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to say ordinal numbers and use them to describe position.

We're going to be learning what ordinal numbers are and how we can use them to help us describe where things are.

Some of our learning today is brand new but don't worry, I am here to help you and we will be able to learn it together.

In our lesson today, we will be using some very important keywords.

Here they are, so we have got five keywords today.

We're going to have a quick practise of saying our keywords.

I will say them first and then I would like you to say them after me.

Ready? First, second, third, fourth, fifth.

Good job.

Listen out for those words throughout this lesson, you're going to find out exactly what they mean and how to use them.

We have two parts in today's lesson.

To begin with, we are going to practise saying ordinal numbers and then in our second part of the lesson, we're going to be using ordinal numbers to describe position, so describing where things are.

So let's start with saying ordinal numbers.

There are going to be some children helping us today.

Their names are Sam, Sophia, John, Alex and Lucas.

Here is a little story for you.

This morning, some children travelled to school in a car and then they stopped at the traffic light because the traffic light was red, and we know we have to stop at a red light, and so these cars made a line at the red traffic light.

The yellow car is at the front of the line.

It is right next to the traffic light, it is at the front.

That means we can say the yellow car is first.

The next car in the line is the blue car.

We can say the blue car is second.

And the next car in the line is the peach car.

We can say the peach car is third.

Then another car came because the light was still red, it had to join the queue and it was a black car.

We can say the black car is fourth.

And then another car came and joined the line, the light still had not gone green, so the red car came and joined the line.

We can say that the red car is fifth.

We use ordinal numbers every day to talk about order and position.

So listen to this story, I wonder if this has ever happened to you.

We have Sam, Sophia and Lucas and they are waiting in a line to get their lunch.

I bet they're quite hungry.

I can see Sam is at the front of the line.

They are right next to the place where they get their food.

Sam is at the front, that means Sam is first.

Sophia is the next person in the line, that means Sophia is second.

And Lucas is the next person in the line, that means Lucas is third.

While they're waiting for their lunch, somebody else came to join the line, it was John.

So because John is the next person after third, he is fourth.

John is fourth in the line.

And then another friend came to join the line, this time it was Alex.

Alex is fifth in the line.

Tomorrow they might have to line up for lunch again but they might be in a different order this time.

So I would like you to have a look at the children and their order in the line and I would like you to see if you can say their order using those important words that we have been practising.

Pause the video if you need to and see if you can use our ordinal numbers to describe where these children are in the line.

Off you go.

Well done, everybody.

Let's have a look and see if you've used all of the correct order numbers in the right place.

We can say for these children in this line, Lucas is first.

We could say John is second.

Alex is third.

Sam is fourth.

Sophia is fifth.

Well done if you've got all of those ordinal numbers, good job.

Children can line up in different directions.

So if we look at this line, now these children are waiting at the door.

Perhaps they're waiting to go outside to have their playtime or perhaps they're going out for a walk.

Now this time John is at the front of the line.

John is right next to the door, he is at the front.

We are going to say the position of each child in the line.

Now John is first, Lucas is second, Alex is third, Sam is fourth, Sophia is fifth.

Let's have a look at these cars again.

Now the cars are going home.

That means they're going in a different direction and again, they have had to stop at a red light and make a line.

The red car is at the front of the line because it is right next to the traffic light.

If the red car is at the front, that means the red car will be first.

The black car is second, the peach car is third.

The blue car is fourth and the yellow car is fifth.

Tomorrow, those cars might be waiting in a different order on their way home.

I would like you to try and say the new order using those ordinal numbers that you've just been hearing me say.

Pause the video if you need to and have a try at saying the order of the cars.

Well done.

Let's have a look and see if you've got them all correct.

We would say the blue car is first because the blue car is at the front of the line.

The peach car is second.

The yellow car is third.

The red car is fourth and the black car is fifth.

Good job, everybody.

Now you are going to go and do a little bit of work to practise using ordinal numbers.

So you are going to have these cards that you can cut out or if you have some of your own cards to use, you could use those instead.

You are going to put your cars in a line with the traffic light at the front and once you've made your line, I would like you to see if you can say these sentences and fill in the gap.

You are going to say the mm car is first, the mm car is second, the mm car is third.

So you can say the colour of each car to fill in those sentences.

If you've done it, then I would like you to make a new line of cars, move them all around, put them in a different order and try and say those sentences again.

Go and try your best on that activity for me and then we will carry on in a few minutes with the next part of our learning.

Off you go.

Welcome back, everybody.

Well done for working really hard on that task.

We are going to have a look and see what you could have done.

Now there are lots of different ways that you might have put your cars in a line but here is one that somebody has made and this would be their sentences.

They've said the black car is first, the blue car is second, the yellow car is third.

This person has looked very carefully to find the front of their line and they have told me that the black car is first because they have spotted it is at the front.

Did you spot which car was at the front of your line? Well done if you did.

We are going to start the second part of our lesson now and we are going to use ordinal numbers that we have just been practising to describe different positions in a line.

If we have a line, we always need to check the direction of the line by looking for the front.

So if I look at this line of cars, I can see they are waiting at a traffic light and that means that the red car must be at the front of the line because it is right next to the traffic light.

If it's at the front, I know the red car is first.

Then I could work out that the blue car is fourth.

If I start at the front of my line and I say my ordinal numbers, I know it will be first, second, third, fourth.

That means the blue car must be fourth in the line.

If I have another try, again, I still know that the red car is first because it is at the front of the line.

If I wanted to talk about the peach car, I could count along and I could think the red car is first.

The black car is second.

The peach car is third in the line.

The front of the line can move.

It can be in different places but the car that is closest to the front of the line will always be first in the line.

So now the yellow car is at the front, so that means the yellow car is first in the line.

It is right next to the traffic light at the front, so the yellow car is first.

I wonder what colour car is fourth now in this new line? Could I count along to help me? I think I could.

The yellow car is first.

The blue car is second.

The peach car is third.

The black car is fourth, aha.

I wonder what colour car is fourth? It is the black car.

The black car is fourth in the line.

Now we're going to look at some children who are waiting.

They're waiting to go out to play.

Can you complete these sentences to show their position in the line? Mm is first in the line.

Lucas is mm in the line and mm is fifth in the line.

Look very carefully at the children and the order that they are waiting in.

Pause the video if you need to, I would like you to say those sentences and tell me the order of those children.

Off you go.

Well done for having a go.

Let's see if you have got each one correct.

Mm is first in the line.

If I look at my picture, I can see that it is John.

John is first in the line.

He's at the front right next to the door.

Lucas is third in the line and Sam is fifth in the line.

Good job if you've got all of those right, well done.

You have one more piece of work to do.

This time you have got some buses and the buses are in a line waiting at the bus stop and what I would like you to do is colour in your buses by following the instructions.

So you have four sentences that say the third bus in the line is blue.

The first bus in the line is yellow.

The fourth bus in the line is black.

The fifth bus in the line is red.

Could you go and get some colours and colour in those buses to match those sentences? Then you will find there is one bus left that we haven't coloured in.

When you have one bus left, you can choose your own colour and fill in the sentence at the bottom.

Are you ready? Off you go.

Well done, everyone.

Let's have a look and see how you have got on with these buses.

You can see I have got all the buses coloured in, so you should have the first bus in the line is yellow.

Did you colour in the first bus yellow? Good job.

The third bus in the line is blue.

The fourth bus in the line is black and the fifth bus in the line is red.

So those are our four colours that the instructions told us to colour in but we had one bus left.

You can see I have coloured my bus in purple, so I have said the second bus in the line is purple, but you could have chosen a different colour.

Well done if you have filled in that sentence correctly.

Today we have been learning all about ordinal numbers and now that we are at the end of this lesson, you can say the ordinal numbers; first, second, third, fourth and fifth.

You know how to find the front of the line and you can use it to help you describe position using ordinal numbers.

I am so pleased that you have all worked so hard today.

You have done a really good job of using ordinal numbers.

Well done, everyone.

I hope I'll see you again soon for some more maths learning.

Bye bye everybody.
