Hello, and welcome to this lesson counting forward to 20 and back from 20.

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to counts backwards from any number between zero and 20.

The key words we're gonna be using during this lesson are one more, next, one fewer and before.

And so, one more will be one more number and next will be the next number.

And one fewer will be one fewer or the number before.

So in the first part of our session today we're gonna be counting forwards and backwards to 20.

When you count forwards to 20 you're counting one more each time.

This we call the next number.

Let's count forwards as you see the fish appear.

So at the moment you can see one fish on the screen.

If there's one more fish, there'll be two fish.

So two is the next number.

Let's count forwards as you see the fish appear.

Are you ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

The last number we said was 20.

So there are 20 fish on the screen.

Now then, when we count backwards we're saying one fewer each time.

We call this the number before.

So at the moment you can see 20 fish on the screen.

One fewer than 20 is, that's right, it's 19.

So 19 is the number before 20.

Let's count backwards from 20 as you see the fish disappear.

Are you ready? So 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

There are no fish on the screen.

Okay, now next few slides, you're gonna need a big space.

So first of all, I want you to stand up.

Now then, it may be that you decide to do this outside in the garden or outside in the playground or in the hall.

But if you're gonna do this in the classroom or you can listen to my instructions.

However, if you decide to outside, your teacher or your adult might need to print out the following instructions so they can say them out to you.

This is how we're gonna do it on this slide.

Are you ready? So what I want you to do is walk forwards and count 20 giant steps in a giant voice.

Remember though when you are counting, one number name for each step.

Are you ready? Let's count forwards, get your giant voice ready and your giant footsteps ready, ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

Did you make really big giant footsteps? And did you have a really giant voice? Right, let's try again a second one.

We're gonna be turning around and counting backwards from 20 back to zero.

This time I want you to take tiny footsteps in a tiny, tiny voice.

Are you ready? Let's go.

20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

Well done.

Was it easier counting forwards or counting backwards? Now then are you ready? I've got two more instructions.

So firstly, I want you to skip forwards and count 20 skips in a squeaky voice.

Then when you get to the other end, I want you to turn around and come backwards, counting backwards to zero and jumping back in a deep voice.

Now I've got an extra challenge for you, when you are counting both ways, when you say the number 15, I want you to do a star jump.

Can you remember that? So let's start off, let's count forwards to begin with.

So get your squeaky voice ready and your skipping forwards.

Count 20 skips ready? So 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

Don't forget the star jump.

16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

Turn around.

Now we're going to count backwards to zero and you're gonna jump back in a deep voice.

I'm not going to remind you about star jump this time.

Are you ready? So 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

Did you remember to do the star jump? Well done.

Now then, next ones.

Are you ready? So you're going to count forwards to 20 in a slow voice walking on your tiptoes, then turn around and walk back taking stumping footsteps, but in a singing voice.

Now your exit challenge this time is when you say the number 10, I want you to turn all the way around before continuing the count.

Are you ready? So slow voice on tiptoes to begin with.

So ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, turn around 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Okay, and the final challenge, are you ready? So turn around.

Don't forget you've got those big stamping footsteps, but have your singing voice and don't forget to turn around at 10.

Okay, so 20.

20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

Well done.

You've done really well counting forwards and backwards to 20.

Did you remember which number came before and which number came next? Now, we'll practise counting forwards and backwards to 20 by playing a game.

This is task 1, which is a game for two players.

You'll need a spin like the one on the screen, 20 cubes or counters in a pot and a blank or empty number track, it's 20.

Now, count out your cubes or your counters from the pot and place one in each of the spaces on the number track.

To play the game, spin the spinner and count back from 20 and put the cubes back into the pot.

The winner is the one who puts the last counter or the last cube back into the pot.

Pause the video now so you can play the game.

How did you get on? Did you put all the cubes out on the track at the start? Did you count them out and see which number came next? Did you manage to spin the spinner, managed to take all the cubes off by the end? Well done.

Okay, we've now finished the first part of our lesson today and we're moving on to the second part.

This time we're going to be counting forwards and backwards from different starting points.

So it's important when we're counting forwards and backwards to know that we can start on different starting points and we can start thinking about the size of each number compared to other numbers.

So this time I want you to stand up when you say the next number.

So you're doing this with a partner you can take turns sitting down and standing up or if you're in a group you can all take turns standing up as it comes to you.

So we're gonna start on number 8, and you can see there are eight balloons on the screen.

So that's your starting number.

So what's the next number after eight? Yes, it's gonna be nine.

So let's start counting ready? So 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

Now let's go the other way around.

This time, when you say one fewer, you're going to sit down.

So we're gonna count backwards from 15 around our circle.

So which number comes before 15? Yes, I'll be 14.

So one fewer than 15 is 14.

Are we ready? So 15, 15 balloons at the moment.

So 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

There are no balloons on the screen.

Now to check that we're thinking about which numbers come before and which numbers come afterwards, we're going to got a true and forced question for you.

Now Lucas says when you count forwards from 12, the next number will be 13, 15, 16, is Lucas, right? Use the bead stringing or use your fingers or some counters to help you.

So try it out in your head, which numbers would you say after 12? We'd say 12, 13, 14, 15.

Oh no, because it's not correct.

So this is false.

When we count forward from 12, the next number would be 13, 14, 15.

So it's false because the number after 13 is 14.

Let's try another one.

So Lucas says when you count back from 18 we say 17, 16, 15, 14.

So look at the beads or some counters see if you can work it out, practise for yourself.

So what number do we say before 18? Yes, we say 17, 16, 15, 14.

So yes, this is true.

One fewer than 18 is 17, and then 16, 15, 14.

Well done.

Let's try another one.

When you count backwards from 13, numbers are 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, is Lucas right? Try out for yourself.

When we count back from 13 the numbers we say are 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7.

Oh no, it's false because 11 is missing.

Lucas forgot to say 11.

It's false, because 11 is one fewer than 12.

Now let's practise counting forwards and back from different starting points.

This is task 2.

For this you'll need an object like a ball or a beanbag or a toy.

This is an activity for two people or for a small group.

There are lots of different instructions.

So your adult or teacher may prefer to read these out to you.

This last instruction says pass an object until you reach 16.

Remember you can only say a number when you have the object.

So if I had the object at the start, I would say one, and I'd pass the object to my partner, who would say two? Then we would carry on counting and passing the object until one of us reached 16 and then we would stop.

And the second one is we're going to change direction.

So you're going to be still passing the object, starting on 16 and counting backwards until you reach eight.

Then you're gonna change direction again and count forward starting on seven.

And finally, change direction and count backwards starting from 16.

Okay, pause the video now to give yourself a chance to have a go.

So how did you get on? For the first part, you were passing the ball forwards counting an object until you reached 16.

So did you remember to think which number comes next? And when you change direction and you were counting backwards did you remember to think which number comes before? So it's always when we're counting forwards, we have to think which number comes next when we're counting backwards we need to remember which number comes before.

Now we're going to play another game.

This is a pass the object game again.

But this time you are going to choose your starting number and you're gonna choose whether you're part-counting forwards or backwards to start off with.

And then remember, you're going be listening out for a signal from your teacher.

They might clap their hands or make a sound.

When you hear the sound or the signal, you're gonna change the direction of your counting.

Did you enjoy playing that game? Was it easy counting forwards or backwards? Were you remembering that when you were counting forwards you were going one more, and when you were counting backwards you were saying one fewer.

We've now finished second part of our lesson we're moving onto the final part.

This time we're counting forwards and backwards within 20.

This means that we won't be starting on zero or 20 every time.

We might be starting and finishing on different numbers.

So we're gonna use counting stick for this.

So if your teacher's got counting stick she may do this with a counting stick in front of you rather than using the video.

But I'm gonna use it in front of you here now.

So I've got a short counting stick we're just gonna have a little practise counting along my little counting stick.

Let's put it this way round.

So we remember only say one number with each jump along the stick.

So we're gonna start here.

We're gonna say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and we can go backwards.

We'll say 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Well done.

From this point, we can count forwards starting on any number.

Let's do it on the screen now so you can all see really clearly.

So we start on number 2, so on the second one here.

I want you to count forwards two, count forwards from two.

Are you ready? So starting on two, let's go to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

Well done.

And now then, we're starting on nine and I want you to count backwards for nine.

Remember you're going to say one fewer than nine, which number comes before nine? Ready? So 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Well done.

Now, we're gonna make it a little bit harder.

This time, our stick's going to start on 10.

So if one end's on 10, let's count forward and work out what the other end's gonna be, shall we? So 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

So the other end's going to be 20.

So now we're on 10.

Let's count forwards from 10.

Are you ready? So 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Now we're going to count backwards from 17.

Remember this is the number before 17, so one fewer than 17.

So back to 10.

So 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10.

Fantastic, you're working so hard.

Now then to check this, we've got a little bit of a number line here.

Can you see my number line? It's only got a few numbers on there.

We've got the numbers 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16.

So it's just a part of the number track.

What I want us to do is count forwards to say which number would come next and then we're gonna count backwards to say which number came before.

So let's start counting forwards.

So we're starting on 12.

So ready? So 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, which number would come next? Yes, it's 17.

Well done.

Now let's count backwards to say which number came before you can start on 17 this time.

So 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12.

The number before 12 is 11, well done.

Fantastic.

So we had the number after 16 was 17 and the number before 12 is 11.

Let's try another one.

Can you count forwards to say which number would come next? So we've got four numbers on our number track.

To start off, we've got 9, 10, 11, 12.

So which number's gonna come next? So 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.

Yes, the number after 12 is 13.

Well done.

Let's count backwards to say which number came before.

So if you count backwards from 13, we say 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, yes, it's eight, because the number before nine is eight.

Let's do one more.

So we've got some numbers here.

I'm gonna read them out to you.

You listening? So 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, which number would come next? Which is one more? One more than 11 is, yes, it's 12, because the number after 11 is 12.

Let's do the last one, which let's count backwards and say which number came before? So 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7.

Before seven is yes, it's six.

The number before seven is six.

Well done.

Now then, going to play a task to practise this.

We're using the tens frames.

So you need to count out 10 counters onto the tens frame to start.

And you're going, this is a paired game so you need to play with a partner.

Now decide whether you will win by reaching 20 or reaching zero.

So if you're reaching 20 you've gotta add on some more counters, but if you're going back to zero you're gonna need to take the counters off.

Spin the spinner to see what number you get.

Now player 1 can count forward with their spin and player 2 is gonna count backwards with their spin.

So for example, if I spin and I get a three and I'm counting forwards I'm on 10, so I count three more.

So I'd be 10, 11, 12, 13.

But if I was player 2 and I got my three on my spin I'd be counting backwards from 10.

So I'd be 10, 9, 8, 7.

Your teacher will need to print off this sheet for you or your adult and then you can play this game.

The main thing we've been learning today is the fact it's really important counting forwards and backwards starting on different numbers, not just zero and 20.

Using a counting stick can really help us to work out where the position of the two numbers so we can see how near they are and the size of them.
