Hello, and welcome to this lesson on counting on.

In our lesson, we are going to be finding that we can count on from any number, and also that we can count anything, not just objects that we can touch and see, but sounds that we can hear, and movements that we make.

In the first part of our lesson, we're going to be counting on from any number up to 20.

So when we count on from any number, we don't have to start at number one.

For example, if we're starting counting at four, we'd say four, five, six, but to count on from six, we don't need to go back to one and start from the beginning.

We can count on from number six.

So we'd say four, five, six, and the next number would be seven.

And if we start counting at 10, we'd say 10, 11, 12, and we don't need to go back to number one to start the count.

We can count on from 12, so our next number would be 13.

Should we check and see if we understand how to do this? So I'm going to count some numbers up, and you're going to listen to these numbers.

Shut your eyes so you can listen really carefully, and I'm going to count up, and when I stop, I want you to carry on counting all the way up to 20, but I want you to do it in a really squeaky voice.

Are you ready? Eyes shut.

Four, five, six, seven, eight.

How did you get on? The last number we heard was eight, so the next number would be nine.

Should we do it together this time? So I'll count up, and when I stop, let's carry on together in a squeaky voice all the way up to 20.

Are you ready? Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Were you squeakier than me? Let's try another one.

This time, when I stop the count, I want you to carry on counting up to 20 in a giant voice.

Shut your eyes so you can really listen.

Ready? Five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11.

Did you manage it? So the last number you heard was 11, so the next number would be? 12.

Well done.

Let's do this together.

Okay? So five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

Let's try another one.

This time, when I stop counting, I want you to use a whispered voice.

Right? Shut your eyes, and listen to my counting.

10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

Okay, so the last number you heard was 14, so the next number would be? 15.

So I'll count again, and you join in.

So 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

And the last one.

Listen to the count and continue counting to 20 in a deep, slow voice.

So eyes shut to listen.

13, 14, 15, 16, 17.

So the next number is going to be 18.

Well done.

Now then, for your task, what I'd like you to do is to work either in with a partner or in a small group, and you're going to be counting around your group.

If you get an adult to read these instructions out, or your teacher to read these instructions out, and then you can do each task.

So stop the video after each instruction so that you can do it.

So the first one says in groups of four or groups of two, count forward starting on eight around your group until you reach 20.

So stop the video now.

Okay, for your second task, I want you to count forward starting on seven.

Stop the video now.

And finally, I want you to count forward starting on 15.

Stop the video now.

So how did you get on? Let's go through the first task.

So in your groups, you were counting forwards from eight around the group.

So the number after eight is? Nine.

So the count should have been, let's do this together.

Nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

For the second task, we were going to count forwards starting from seven.

So when we're counting on from seven, the next number we will say will be eight.

Let's do that together, too.

So we're starting off from seven, so we'll say eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

Finally, we're starting counting from 15.

So we're carrying on from 15, our first number's going to be 16.

So should we do that? 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

You can carry on the count when we're counting forwards.

So we've now finished the first section of our lesson where we've been counting forwards from any number to 20.

For the second part, we're going to be counting on from a number, but this time we're going to be using manipulatives.

And for this part of the session, we're going to be using a bead string.

Now, I've put a bead string on the screen for you to look at, but you may prefer to use a bead string on the table in front of you, so real bead strings so that you can move the beads across as you're counting.

Let's see, let's look at the bead string on the screen, though.

So how many beads can you see on the bead string? Should we count them together? Ready? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

So the last number we said was 20, so we know there are 20 beads on the bead string.

Now then.

I'm going to hide some of those beads.

I'm going to hide the first six beads on the bead string.

Just like this.

Okay? So you can see I've hidden six beads.

So now we're going to count on from six along the bead string until we get to 20.

So if you're doing this with real beads, count along and move six beads to one side, and then you're going to count along with us.

So the number after six is? Yes, it's seven.

So we're going to be carrying on the count from six, and we'll be starting with seven.

Ready? Seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

Let's try another one.

So put your bead string out in front of you, or look at the 20 beads on the screen.

And now I'm going to hide 12 beads this time.

So if you've got your bead string in front of you, count up 12 beads and push them to one side.

And I'm going to hide 12 on the screen here.

So, we've got 12 hidden.

So the next number, when we're carrying on the count after 12 is? Yes, it's 13.

So let's carry on counting.

Ready? 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

Well done.

Now we're going to check that you know what you're doing.

So I've got a true or false here, so you can either say true or false, or you can do a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

So when we're counting on, my question is the next number after 14 would be 15.

Is that true, or is it false? Yes, it's true.

When we carry on the count from 14, the next number we'll say will be 15.

Here we go, here's another one.

Is it true or false? When we carry on the count from 13, the next number will be 12.

Is that true, or is it false? No, it's false.

If we're counting forwards, the number after 13 when we carry on the count is going to be 14.

It's that 12 comes before 13.

Did you get that right? Let's try the next one.

True or false, the number after 11 would be 12.

What did you say? Yes, it's true.

When we carry on the count from 11, the next number we say is 12.

The final one, is this true or false? When we carry on the count from 10, the next number we'll say would be 12.

No, that's false.

The number after 10 would be 11.

So if we carried on the count from 10, the next number would be 11.

The number after 11 would be 12.

Well done.

Now we're going to look at task two.

Task two, you could either use the handouts, or you could use the bead string.

So what you will need to do is start at a number and then count on until you get to another number.

Now, what we've been practising in this lesson so far is counting up until we get to 20, but this time, you're going to be stopping before you get to 20.

So for the first task, you're going to be starting at seven and counting on until you get to 12, and then stopping.

On the second one, you're going to be starting at 13, then carrying on until you get to 18.

And on the final one, you're going to start at 15 and count on from 15 until you get to 19.

So how did you get on? Let's look at the first one.

So you were starting on seven, and then if we tap each bead, we're gonna carry on the count until we get to 12.

So you ready? Seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12.

And that's where we stop.

Let's try the second one.

So this time, we were starting at 13, and carrying on the count until we got to 18.

So our count will be 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.

And that's where we stop.

And finally, we're starting at 15 and carrying on the count until we get to 19.

So we will say 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and that's where we'll stop.

So now we have finished the second part of our session.

We've been counting on from any number using a bead string to help us.

So now we're moving to the final part of our lesson.

This is where we're going to be listening to sounds and counting on.

We can count anything.

So far today, we've been counting objects that we can see, and objects that we can touch.

Just like the bead string.

But we can also count sounds that we hear, imaginary objects, movements we make, like big footsteps or little footsteps, and words.

Now what I want you to do now is do some good listening.

I'm going to do some clapping, and I want you to listen to my claps and count them in your head.

Then you're gonna show me on your fingers how many claps you hear.

Are you ready? (clapping hands) How many claps did you hear? Ready to show me on your fingers? So one, two, three.

Show me.

Yes, well done.

There were six claps.

We can clap together.

Let's do the clap together.

So we'll six claps.

Ready? One, two, three, (clapping hands) four, five, six.

Well done.

Now I want you to count on from six and stop at 14.

What number comes after six? Yes, the next number after six is seven.

So we're going to start our count starting at seven.

Let's count together.

Seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

Fantastic.

Should we do another one? So listen to my claps and count them in your head.

Ready? (clapping hands) How many claps did you hear? That's right, you heard 11.

Let's count and clap together.

Ready? One, two, three, (clapping hands) four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11.

There were 11 claps.

The last number I said was 11, so we know there were 11 claps.

Now I want you to count on from 11 and stop when you get to 18.

So the next number after 11 would be? Yes, that's right, it's 12.

So let's start our count on 12, so.

12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.

Well done.

Right.

Now we're going to do a little activity to check your listening and counting on.

So for this activity, you're going to need a cup, and some objects to drop into the cup.

So what I'd like you to do is listen while I show you.

So I'm going to drop some objects, and the objects I've got are little cubes, and I'm going to drop my cubes into the cup, and then I'm going to ask you how many objects did you hear.

You can show me on your fingers how many you heard.

Are you ready? I'm going to start dropping them now.

Ready? (objects clattering) How many objects did you hear? Show me on your fingers.

So ready? One, two, three.

Show me.

Well done.

There were eight objects I dropped into the cup.

Eight objects.

So now I've got a challenge for you.

You ready for the challenge? What would happen if I dropped in two more objects? So here are my two more objects.

I've already got eight in my cup.

I'm going to drop in two more objects.

Listen carefully.

I'm going to drop them in.

Ready? (objects clattering) How many objects are in the cup now? That's right, there would be 10 objects because the number after eight is nine, and the next number would be 10.

Let's see what that looks like on the bead string.

You could put a bead string in front of you if you've got one.

So let's find where number eight is.

There is eight.

So one more than eight would be? Nine.

And one more than nine would be? 10.

So if we count on two more from eight, we say eight, nine, 10.

So we know there are 10 objects in the cup.

Well done.

Let's try another one.

Some more objects to drop in.

So listen carefully while I drop them in.

Ready? (objects clattering) How many objects did you hear? Show using your fingers.

So three, two, one.

Show me now.

That's right, there were nine objects dropped into the cup.

Let's have a challenge.

Ready? So now then, there's nine in the cup, and I've got three more to drop in.

So listen very carefully when I drop them in.

Ready? (objects clattering) How many are there now? Yes, there are 12 objects, because the number after nine is 10.

Next number would be 11, and then 12.

And let's look at that on the bead string, too.

So let's find where nine is.

There's nine.

And one more would be 10.

Then 11.

And then 12.

So if we're on nine, we'd count on, 10, 11, 12.

Well done.

And let's try a final one.

So you're going to listen to the sound of the objects being dropped into the cup.

Are you ready? (objects clattering) How many did you hear? Show using your fingers, so.

Three, two, one.

Show me now.

That's right.

There were six objects dropped into the cup.

Let's have the final challenge.

What would happen if I dropped in three more objects? So I've got six objects in the cup at the moment, and I've got three more objects to drop in.

Are you ready? I'm dropping them in now, so.

(objects clattering) How many objects are in the cup now? Yes, there would be nine objects, because the number after six is seven.

The next number would be eight, and then nine.

And let's look at that on the bead string, too.

So let's find where number six is there.

So six, one more would be seven.

Then eight.

And then nine.

So if we count on three more from six, we'd say seven, eight, nine.

Well done.

You've listened really hard, and listened to see how many objects there are.

Now our final task in this lesson is a game for two players.

So your teacher or your adult will have these cards, and you're going to pick up a card and count the objects and clap the amount to player two.

And then your second player is going to listen to how many claps they hear, and continue the count to 20.

When you've finished playing this game, there's a blank board that you can use, and you can draw your own images on the board, so your own little pictures, and then you can play the game with somebody else, and they can count up your objects, and then carry on the count to 20.

How did you get on? Let's look at the first board.

So if you picked out the balloons and counted out the balloons, you would see there are nine balloons, so you would need to clap nine times, and then carry on the count.

So nine comes before? Yes, 10.

So the next number would be 10.

And if you counted those squares, you would see there were one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11.

There are 11 squares, so you would have to do 11 claps, so the next number would be 12.

Well done.

How did you get on drawing your pictures? Could you draw a picture so the count starts at seven? How many pictures would you need to draw so the count would start at seven? That's right, you'd need to draw six pictures.

How many pictures would you have to draw to count on from 11? That's right, you'd need to draw 10 pictures.

Well done.

We've now finished this lesson.

You've worked really hard today, and now you can count on from any number, and do not need to start counting from one.

We've been using the bead string a lot to help us with our counting today, and we now know that we can count anything.

We can count the sounds, like clapping and stamping feet.

We can count movements and words.
