Hello and welcome to this lesson finding one more and one less using manipulatives and images.

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to identify one more or one less and you'll be able to identify missing numbers in the counting sequence.

There are two parts to our lesson today.

In the first part, you're gonna be matching amounts, looking for amounts that are one more than or one less than.

And in the second part, you're gonna be counting forwards and backwards for one more and one less.

Let's think about the first part of our lesson now.

We're thinking about matching cards and matching amounts that show one more than and one less than.

When we're counting forwards, we're thinking one more each time.

And when we're counting backwards, we're thinking about one less than each time.

Let's start off by counting all the way up to 20.

That way we're counting one more each time.

Are you ready? So 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

So we were counting on one more each time.

Now we're gonna count backwards.

We'll be thinking about one less each time, starting at 20, all the way back to zero.

So 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

Now, on the screen, you can see lots of different images and we're going to be using these images later in the lesson.

But to start off with, we're just going to be thinking about those chicks.

So there they are again.

So my first question is how many chicks can you see? Can you count them? Let's count together.

Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

There are 15 chicks.

Now we need to think about what is one less than 15? So that's when we're counting backwards.

So one less than 15 would be? The number before 15, which is yes, it's 14.

So now we want an image that shows us 14 of something.

And here we've got 14 cupcakes.

So one less than 15 is 14.

Well done.

So we found one less than 15.

So now we need to think about what is gonna be one more than 15.

So one more than 15 would be yes, it's the next number.

So one more than 15 would be 16.

And here we have the tens frame.

And the tens frame is showing us a representation of 16.

So now we have our cupcakes, which were 14, our chicks that were 15 and our tens frame that shows 16.

Let's have another go.

This time, the images are there to start off with.

So we can look, first of all, think about how many cakes there are.

So how many cakes can we see? Can you remember? It was on the other slide but let's count to check.

So 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

There are 14 cakes.

Now then, one less than 14 is? What number comes before 14.

One less than 14 is yes, it's 13.

If you counted up those cubes, you'd see there are 13 cubes.

The cubes are representing the number 13.

Now then, one more than 14.

So those chicks again, how many chicks were there? So one more than 14 is yes, it's 15.

So one more 14 is 15.

So we're looking at the numbers in a sequence.

We're seeing 13, 14, and 15.

And 14's in the middle because 13 is one less and 15 is one more.

Now, going to have a check, see if you can remember and work this out for one more and one less.

So on the screen are some cupcakes.

What I want you to do is count up the cupcakes and then look at the images on both sides and see if you can work out which one shows an image of one less and which one shows an image of one more.

Pause the video now so that you can count them out.

Have you worked it out? How many cakes are in the middle? That's the first bit to figure out.

Did you count them? Yes, there are six cakes in the middle.

So now we need to think which number is one less than six.

Well, we can see there are three clouds, there are four spots and there are five chicks.

So one less than six is? Yes, it's five.

It's the five chicks.

Then we want one more than six.

Well, we've got four ladybirds, six yellow circles and seven hats.

So one more than six is? Yes, it's the seven hats.

Fantastic.

Did you get that right? Here's another one to try.

So pause the video while you work it out.

So how many cakes are there in the middle? Yes, there are nine cakes in the middle.

So we need to find a number that is one less than nine and that is one more than nine.

So let's have a look at those one less than images.

Well, there are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 fluffy clouds.

There are eight circles and there are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 chicks.

So the one we're wanting is eight.

So we want the eight circles because eight is one less than nine.

And now we want to look at the one more than images.

So we want an image that represents 10.

So how many ladybirds are there? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 ladybirds.

So it's not the ladybirds.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 yellow circles.

It's not the yellow circles.

It should be the hats.

Let's just check and see.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

Yes, it's the hats.

There are 10 hats because 10 is one more than nine.

So we've got eight is one less than nine and 10 is one more than nine.

Well done.

Now, for the task for this part, we're coming back to those cards that we had at the start.

What you'll need to do is cut up the cards and shuffle them, turn them upside down on the table.

Then you're going to pick a card and then you're gonna see if you can find two more cards that show one more than and one less than, and then you've got a set.

This could be a good game to pay with a partner.

Did you manage to find a set of three cards? Were you able to find one more than and one less than? Now, the next stage is to be able to work out some more sentences so you can really explain when you've found your matching sets.

So I've brought the set that we started up with at the start of the lesson.

So we've got the cakes, chicks, and the tens frame.

Do you remember, the cake represents number 14, the chicks represent the number 15 and the tens frame represents the number 16.

So we could say that 14 is one less than 15, 15 is one less than 16, or we could go the other way around or we could say 16 is one more than 15 and 15 is one more more than 14.

Then we can put these bits together and make one long sentence.

Are you ready? We could say 14 is one less than 15, which is also one less than 16.

Or we could say 16 is one more than 15, which is one more than 14.

So we've made a comparison with both the other cards.

Let's try with some other cards.

So here we've got the party hats, the black circles and the cubes.

You may have used this one in your game.

So there are 11 party hats, 12 black circles, and 13 cubes.

So we can make sentences in the same way.

So firstly, we can just compare the two of the cards.

So we could say 11 is one less than 12 and we could also say 12 is one less than 13.

Then we can look the other way round and think about which ones are more than.

So we could say 13 is one more than 12 and 12 is one more than 11.

Now we can put them together into the big sentence.

Let's start with a less than first.

So we say 11 is one less than 12, which is one less than 13.

Now we do it the other way around.

So 13 is one more than 12, which is one more than 11.

Well done.

You can try this again when you play the card game again.

We've now finished the first part of our lesson.

So we move to the second part where we're gonna be counting forwards and backwards for one more and one less.

So for this final part of this lesson, we're gonna be thinking about our counting.

So in front of you on the screen, you can see a big number track.

This is a bit like a number track that you might have in the playground where you can stand it and walk forwards and walk backwards.

That's what I want you to think about when we're counting forwards and counting backwards.

So on the screen, you can see a girl standing on number nine and she's saying, "What would happen if I went on one more?" So let's think about when we're counting on one more.

So if we count on one more for nine, we'd get to? Yes, 10.

So we can use our knowledge of counting to work out what one more than nine is.

And let's see her move, see if she goes on one more.

And so one more from nine and she's now on number 10.

So when we're moving forwards and counting forwards, we move on one more.

Now when we're going backwards, we're counting one less.

So here's the boy and he's standing on number 12 and he says, "What happens if I go back one step?" So if he's standing on 12 and he goes back one step one, one less than 12 is? It's 11.

So one less than 12 is 11.

So when we're counting backwards, we can find one less.

So we can really use our counting forwards and counting backwards to help us with more than and less than.

So let's have a little check here.

So on the screen, you can see a number track but most of the numbers are empty.

Can you see? There's no numbers on my number track.

The only number there is number 12.

So my question is what comes next? What is one more than 12? So think about when you are counting, what number do you say after 12? Which number comes next? Is it 11? Is it 13 or is it 23? Which number comes after 12? So one more than 12 is? 1, 2, 3.

Yes, it's 13 because 13 is one more than 12.

Let's try another one.

So which number comes next? And we're counting forwards.

We're on 15.

So which number do we say next? What is one more than 15? Is it 16, 15, or 17? Which number comes next? 1, 2, 3.

Tell me.

Yes, that's right, it's 16.

16 is one more than 15.

Now let's have a little think about which number comes before.

So when we want to know which number comes before, we have to count backwards.

So we were on 16, so which number do we say next when we're counting backwards? Which number comes before 16? Is it 17, 14, or 15? Which number comes before 16? That's right, it's 15.

Did you get that right? It's a tricky one that one.

So first answer says 17.

We know that 17's near 16, but 17 is one more than 16.

We're looking at the number that comes before.

So 17 comes after 16.

Let's try another one.

Which number comes before? So this time, we're back on 14 but we want to know which number comes before 14.

So counting backwards.

Can you work it out? Which one comes before 14? Is it 11? Is it 13 or is it 23? 1, 2, 3.

Tell me.

Yes, it's 13.

13 is one less than 14.

13 comes before 14.

Now we're going forwards again because we wanna know which number comes next.

So which number comes next after 11? So if we're on 11, one more than 11 is? Is it 13, is it 10 or is it 12? That's right, the answer is 12.

12 is one more than 11.

10 and 11 are very close together but 10 is one less than 11.

And the final one, we're on 13 and we want to know which number comes before 13.

So is the answer 14, 12, or 11? But it can't be 14, can it? 'Cause 14 is one more than 13.

So which one do you think it is? That's right, it's 12 'cause 12 is one less than 13.

Fantastic.

Did you get them right? Now we're moving on the final part of our lesson today and this is a drawing activity.

So on the screen in front of you, you can see some images.

And you're gonna have a copy of this on a sheet that you can draw on.

So you can see four bead strings.

And the first one shows a representation for 12, 13, then 15, then 19.

For the first part of this task, you'll need to draw a picture to represent one less than 12, then a picture to represent one less than 13, one less than 15, and one less than 19.

So what is one less than 12? So one less than 12 would be? Yes, that's right, it'll be 11.

So you need to draw a picture that represents 11.

So you could draw another bead string or you could draw something else that represents 11, like some blocks or some stars or some hearts.

And then on the other side, you need to draw an image that represents one more than 12.

So one more than 12 would be? Yes, that's right, it'll be 13.

So you need to draw an image there or a picture that represents 13.

So it could be a bead string with 13 beads on or it could be something else that represents 13.

You need to pause the video now so that you can draw the images to show one more than and one less than.

So did you manage to do that? Did you manage to draw images to show one more than and one less than? These are the images that I drew.

So I had 12 beads on the first one.

So then I drew a bead string that showed one less than 12.

One less than 12 is? Yes, that's right, it's 11.

And one more than 12 is? That's right, it's 13.

So there are 13 beads on my bead string.

Let's look at the second one.

So there's a bead string that shows 13 beads.

So I had to draw a picture that represented one less than 13.

Also, when I'm counting backwards, I could think which number comes before 13 because that's gonna be the same as one less than 13.

So the number before 13 is 12.

So I've drawn a picture that represents 12.

Then to find one more than 13, we count forwards.

So the number after 13, one more than 13 is? Yes, that's right, it's 14.

Let's look at the third one.

So the picture in the middle shows a representation of the number 15.

So to start off with, if we want to find one less than, we need to count backwards.

So if we're counting backwards from 15, the number before 15 is? Yes, that's right, it's 14.

So there's an image to show 14.

And then if we're counting forwards, we want to count forwards to find one more.

So one more than 15 is? Yes, it's 16.

So there are 16 beads on my bead string.

And on the final one, we've got 19 beads.

So we count backwards from 19 to find which number comes before 19.

So one less than 19 is? Yes, 18.

So there are 18 cubes in my picture.

And then the last picture is one more than 19.

So we're counting on from 19, counting fours from 19.

So one more than 19 is? Yes, it's 20 and there are 20 stars in my picture.

Fantastic, I bet you did some really lovely pictures to represent those different numbers.

So we've now got to the end of our lesson today.

What we found is we can count forwards to find one more and we can count backwards to find one less.

So we need to keep practising our counting forwards and backwards so that we become really proficient counting forwards for one more and counting backwards for one less.

And we can use a variety of different manipulatives and pictures to help us with our counting.
