Hi, everyone.

How are you today? Today in math, we're going to be creating and describing shape patterns, so get yourself ready.

In today's lesson, we'll be looking at shape patterns, you will complete a talk task, an independent task, and then a quiz.

For today's lesson, you will need a pencil and some paper.

Pause this video now to get this if you have not got it already.

I picked a pattern has a repeated design or recurring sequence.

A pattern has a repeated design or recurring sequence.

So repeat means it's the same more than once.

So, what shapes are in the pattern? I can see that the pattern goes circle, rectangle, circle, rectangle, circle, rectangle.

That's is what the pattern is.

What will be next in the pattern? So if I know, it goes circle, rectangle, circle, rectangle, circle, rectangle.

The next shape after the rectangle will be the circle because it is repeating.

It will be the same.

Can you have a go at this one? What shapes are in the pattern? What is the pattern? And what shape will be next in the pattern? So what shapes are in the pattern? The only shape that I can see is a triangle.

The triangle is the only shape I can see.

But the triangles look a little bit different, why is that? Because it goes, the triangle was facing up, then the triangle is upside down, the triangle was facing up, the triangle is facing down, and so on.

What shape will be next in the pattern? So the last shape was that the triangle is facing down.

Now, in this pattern, you can always see that after a triangle is facing down, the next shape will be a triangle facing up.

So the next shape will be in the pattern, a triangle facing up.

Well done.

Have another go at this one.

This is a repeated pattern.

What shapes can you see in the pattern? What is the pattern? What shape will be next in the pattern? So the only shape that I can see is a square, but the squares are a little different because they are different sizes.

So my pattern starts with a big square, then it goes to a small square, big square, small square, big square, small square.

So that is the pattern, big square, small square.

What will be next in the pattern? What will come next after the small square? That's right.

It will be a big square.

Because before every small square is a big square, and after every small square is a big square.

So the answer will be a big square because that is always what follows.

What I would like you to do for your talk task, I would like you to say it out loud.

I would like you to tell me what the pattern is, so I'd like you to tell me what the next shape in the pattern is.

Let's do the first one together.

The pattern is big square, small circle, small square.

So the next shape in the pattern is a big square.

Well done.

Could you please pause the video to complete the next two patterns? Well done for completing that.

Can you remember the name of these shapes? That's right.

We have a square, we have a triangle, but it's a right angled triangle, and we also have one, two, three, four, five, six, a six-sided shape, which is a hexagon.

Here I have a pattern.

Can you please tell me what will be next in the pattern? So what will come next in the pattern is a green square because after the hexagon is a green square.

What will come after the green square? By looking at these pictures here, what comes after the green square? It's always the same because it's repeating.

That's right, the orange right angled triangle.

Again, by looking at the pictures, what shape is going to come after the right angled triangle? And it's always the same shape because it's repeating, it's recurring.

That's right, it's the hexagon.

Fantastic job.

Now for the independent task, can you create your own shape pattern? Then they need to include these different things.

Can your first pattern include three different shapes? Can your second pattern have a pentagon in it? And can your third pattern only have one shape, but this one shape might change in size or it could change as in direction, so it could be facing up, it could be facing to the side, it could be facing down.

Everyone's answers are going to look a little bit different, so when you are ready, press play, and you will see an example of my patterns.

But remember, your patterns won't look the same as mine because they are all going to be different because we're going to be really creative.

So, pause the video now and then press play when you're ready for my example.

And here are my answers.

Remember, this is just an example of my patterns, but your answers may be different.

Maybe ask an adult, a parent or carer, to check yours if you get a chance.

Great work for today.

I would love to see your patterns.

So if you'd like to share your work with Oak National, please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Twitter, tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak.

Amazing job today.

Now, let's see what you can remember by completing the quiz.

See you later.

Bye.
