Hi, everyone.

I'm Miss Mitchell.

Today in maths, we are going to be representing and interpreting data from a block diagram and from a table.

So I hope you're ready to do some maths.

In today's lesson, we'll be looking at tables and block diagrams. You will then complete an independent task and then a quiz.

For today's lesson, you will need a pencil and some paper.

Pause this video now to get this, if you have not got it already.

Today we are going to collect data about the colour of aliens.

We are going to collect the data and put it in a table and then into a block diagram.

A block diagram could also show data, just as a pictogram shows data.

We are going to complete the table by looking at the pictures.

How many purple aliens are there? In this picture here, can you see any purple aliens? No.

So, we're going to go down to aliens.

We'll go down to where it says purple, and we go across to where it says total.

Now if we can't see any purple aliens, what number will I need to put there? That's right.

The number zero.

I can see zero purple aliens.

I then go down to the next row, where it says the word yellow.

How many yellow aliens are there? Let's count together.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.

There are nine yellow aliens.

So, I'm going to go to my table, I'm going to go down to where it says yellow, and then I'm going to go across to where it says total, and I'm going to write the number nine.

Well done.

Can you pause the video to complete the rest of the table? Well done.

And here are the answers.

This table and this picture here, this picture here, shows us that there are four green aliens, seven red aliens, and five blue aliens.

Now what we are going to do, we are going to transfer the information from the table into the block diagram.

Just like a pictogram, it can represent data.

Each block represents one.

So let's do the first one together.

By looking at this table, how many purple aliens are there? I will go to my table to where it says purple, and I will go across to where it says zero.

So I know that on my block diagram, where it says purple here, I'm not going to put in any blocks because there are no purple aliens.

So now let's do the next one.

And the next column is yellow.

So I'm going to go to my table.

How many yellow aliens are there? I know the total number is nine.

So what I'm going to do, because each block represents one, I'm going to draw one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.

There are nine aliens that are yellow, so I'm going to draw nine blocks.

Could you see where I started from? I started from the bottom because, look, if I go across, this is where the number one is.

So you need to make sure you start at the bottom and that you go up because you don't want to start on the number 10 if there aren't 10 aliens.

Let's do one more.

The next column across is red aliens.

So I'm going to go across.

Now look, on my table, the next one is actually green, so don't let it trick you.

Make sure you match the column here to the correct row on the table.

And here, it says red, and I go across to the number seven.

So this shows that there are seven red aliens.

So, how many blocks do I need to draw? That's right.

Seven.

And where do I start from? I start from the bottom, well done.

Ready? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

Well done.

I go across to my next column.

What says green? I go to my table, I go down the rows to where it says green, and I go across to the total, and I can see the total number of green aliens are four.

So could you please show me how many blocks I need to draw, where do I draw them, and where do I start? That's right.

I go to the green column, I start from the bottom, and because there are four aliens, I'm going to draw one, two, three, four blocks.

Okay, we're onto the final row now and the final column.

The column says blue.

So, can you have a think please? Can you go over to the table and tell me how many blue aliens there are? What's the total number of aliens, and tell me how many blocks I need to draw.

I go down to my rows, to where it says blue, I go across to the total number, and I can see the total number is five, so I'm going to draw one, two, three, four, five blocks.

From quick pictograms, block diagrams, and tables, we can answer questions.

How many red aliens are there? I know that I need to go down to where it says aliens, I go to where it says red, and I go across, and I can see the total number of red aliens is seven.

There are seven red aliens.

Here's a new question.

There are mm more or fewer red aliens than blue aliens.

Let me read that one more time.

There are mm more or fewer red aliens than blue aliens.

So, I'm going to split this question into two parts.

I'm going to first do the more or fewer part and then I will move on to the how many.

So, are there more or fewer red aliens than blue aliens? Red, there are five, blue, sorry, red there are seven and blue there are five.

So is there more or less red? There's more red.

Seven is bigger than five.

There are more red aliens.

Now I need to know how many more.

What is the difference between seven and five? Well, seven take away five is equal to two.

That means there are two more red aliens than blue aliens.

Now let me just check that.

There are two more, yes, red aliens than blue.

That is definitely right because I have double-checked.

Let's try one more.

There are mm more or fewer blue aliens than yellow aliens.

There are mm more or fewer blue aliens than yellow aliens.

Again, we're going to start with the more or fewer part.

So is there more or fewer blue aliens than yellow aliens? Now blue aliens, there's five, and yellow aliens, there is nine.

So there are fewer blue aliens because there are less.

I now need to know how many less, so I need to find the difference.

What is the difference between nine and five? Well, nine take away five is equal to four.

So there are four fewer blue aliens than yellow aliens.

And again, just let me check.

Yes, because if I add four to five, that will equal nine.

So I know that that is correct.

Well done.

Could you now answer these questions by looking at the block diagram? Pause the video now and then press play when you are ready for the answers.

And here are the answers.

You've done really, really well today.
