Hi everyone, I'm Miss Mitchell.

Today in math you are going to be representing and interpreting information from a pictogram.

So if you can, find a quiet space and get ready.

In today's lesson we will be collecting data, then interpreting data, and then let's see what you can remember by completing a quiz.

For today's lesson you will need a pencil and some paper.

Pause this video now to get this if you have not got it already.

Here we have a star word and the word says data.

Can you say data? Data.

One more time really quietly, data.

Fantastic.

What does the word data mean? Have you heard of the word data before? Data is another word for information.

Today we are going to be gathering information, or data, about the number of eyes that aliens have.

With your pencil and paper, could you please draw out this table.

Pause the video now to do this.

Here you can see aliens with different numbers of eyes.

We're going to sort the aliens according to the number of eyes each one has.

So we are going to be creating a pictogram.

A pictogram represents information using pictures.

So our picture is going to be a circle today.

Now let's do the first one together.

Now I'm looking down here for the number of aliens that have one eye.

So let's do that together.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

There are eight aliens with one eye.

So now we need to draw eight circles and we're going to draw that where it says one eye.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

So this pictogram shows that there are eight aliens because there are eight circles that have one eye.

Now let's try and do the same for the number of aliens that have two eyes.

So we're going to look at this picture over here and count how many aliens have two eyes.

I'm looking.

I'm looking through every single picture.

There are zero.

There are zero aliens with two eyes.

How many circles do you think I need to draw if there are zero aliens, there are no aliens that have two eyes? That's right, I'm not going to draw any circles.

By drawing no circles, that shows me that no aliens have two eyes.

Fantastic.

What I'd like you to do now is to pause the video and complete the rest of the pictogram.

So you need to please show me how many aliens have three eyes, how many aliens have four eyes and how many aliens have five eyes.

Pause this video now.

Well done.

Now let's go through the answers.

How many aliens have three eyes by looking at these pictures.

There are seven.

So we are going to draw seven circles.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

Well done.

I know by looking at this pictogram that there are one, two, three, four, five, six, seven aliens that have three eyes and that is because there are seven pictures, seven circles in the column where it says three eyes.

How many aliens have four eyes? So by looking at this picture now, how many aliens have four eyes? One, two, three, four, five, six.

There are six aliens that have four eyes.

One, two, three, four, five, six, there are six pictures in the column where it says four eyes.

And finally, how many aliens have five eyes.

One, two.

Four, there are four aliens over here that have five eyes.

Well done.

Now does your pictogram look the same as mine? Did you have the same amount of circles in each column? What we can now do is use our pictogram and transfer the information into a table.

Now here we have our headings, they are at the top.

So here this says aliens with.

So this is aliens with one eye, two eyes, three eyes, four eyes, and five eyes.

And this column here shows the total number.

And we just worked out the total number from our pictogram.

Now what we're going to do, we're going to complete this table.

So my first row says one eye and we need to know the total number of aliens that has one eye.

On my pictogram, I can see there are one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

There are eight circles in my one eye column, therefore the total number of aliens with one eye is eight.

So I go to where it says one eye, I go across to where it says total and I write the number eight.

I then go to the next row where it says two eyes.

I need to write the total number of aliens with two eyes.

So I'm going to go to my pictogram, I'm going to go to my column where it says two eyes and look, there are no circles there, zero.

There's nothing there.

So what number am I going to have to write here in the total number column? The number zero because there are no aliens with two eyes.

Could you please pause the video here and complete the rest of my table for me.

So can you please tell me the total number of aliens with three eyes, with four eyes, and with five eyes.

Pause the video now.

Well done.

And here are the answers.

So from looking at my pictogram, I can see there are seven aliens with three eyes, there are six aliens with four eyes and there are four aliens with five eyes.

Did you get the same answers as I did? We can now use this table to answer some questions.

Now I need to know how many aliens there are with five eyes.

So what I'm going to do, I'm going to go to the column where it says aliens and I'm going to go down to where it says five eyes.

And I can see the total number of aliens with five eyes is the number four.

So that means there are four aliens with five eyes.

Okay.

Now here it says there are more or fewer aliens with one eye than four eyes.

I'm just going to say that one more time.

There are more or fewer aliens with one eye than four eyes.

So I'm almost going to answer this question in two parts.

I'm going to start with the more or fewer part.

Are there more or less aliens with one eye than four eyes.

So one eye, there are eight aliens and four eyes, there are six aliens.

So there are more aliens with one eye than four eyes.

I now need to find out how many more.

So I need to find out the difference.

What is the difference between eight, because that's one eye, and six, because that's four eyes.

Eight takeaway six is equal to two.

So that means there are two more aliens with one eye than four eyes and we can just check.

Is there two more with one eye than four eyes? Yes there is.

So it's always worth checking your answers to check that it makes sense.

Well done.

Now could you please answer these questions by looking at this table over here.

Pause the video now and then press play when you are ready for the answers.

And here are the answers.

You've done really, really well today.

If you'd like to share your work with Oak National, then please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Twitter tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak.

Now let's see what you can remember by completing the quiz.

Well done today, you've worked so hard.

Bye!.
