Hello, my name is Miss Jones, and I'm going to be teaching you maths today.

Before we start, I thought I'd show you a crocodile's face.

This is going to be coming up in our maths lesson when we look at more than and less than numbers.

When I'm teaching this lesson in school, I always like to remind the children of the crocodile's mouth.

Because the crocodile's mouth always eats the bigger number.

It's a hungry crocodile.

You might want to make a crocodile mouth too, to help you with today's lesson.

Make sure you ask a parent or carer to help you though whilst you cut out the mouth.

So you can do it safely.

Let's start today's lesson.

Today we're going to be comparing numbers within 1000 using the more than, less than and equals to sign.

Here's the lesson agenda.

We'll start with the new learning where we'll look at the place value of these numbers.

And then there'll be a talk task, followed by an independent task and then finishing off to the post quiz.

You will need a pencil, some paper, and you might like to use dienes to help you with the place value of numbers today.

Or you might have items around your house if you don't have dienes that you could use, such as Lego.

Or you can draw them and represent the dienes using your pencil and paper.

Pause the video now and collect these items if you haven't done so already.

Let's start with our new learning.

What three digit numbers can we make using these digits? Two, four and seven.

Pause the video whilst you have to think.

Are you ready? Tell the screen the numbers that you have come up with.

Great job.

Have we found all the possible three digit numbers? How do you know? Let's look together at all the possibilities.

When the two is in the hundreds column, you can have two possible numbers 247, or 274.

When the four is in the hundreds column, you can have two possible numbers 427 or 472.

And then when the seven is in the hundreds column, you can have two possible numbers 724 or 742.

Now let's look at the word greatest.

Which number has the greatest value? I'm going to give you a few moments to have a think.

How do you know? Let's explore together.

We always look at the hundreds digit when comparing three digit numbers.

This is because the hundreds column has the greatest value.

When comparing three digit numbers and the hundreds is the same, then we need to look at the tens because this is then the next greatest value.

Both these numbers have the same value of hundreds, 742 has more tens than 724.

This means that 742 is the greatest number.

Which number has the least value? Go on tab, screen your answer.

How do you know? 274 has the least value because it has fewer hundreds, than 427.

We can represent greater than, less than, more than less than using symbols.

Here we have the more than symbol, the less than symbol and the equal to symbol.

This is where you'll remember at the start of the lesson, when I talked about my hungry crocodile.

My hungry crocodile's mouth always faces the greatest number.

Let's look at a few examples where these symbols are used in number equations.

Here I have the number 274 and the number 247.

Both these numbers have the same amount of hundreds.

274 has more tens than 247.

This means that 274 is more than 247.

Here you'll see the more than symbol with the crocodile's mouth facing the greatest number.

Let's look at another example.

This time I have the numbers 724 and 742.

Again, like my previous example, they both have the same number of hundreds.

So I need to look at the tens.

724 has fewer tens than 742.

This means that 724 is less than, here's my less than symbol, 742.

This time my crocodile is still facing the great number, but the greatest number isn't coming first.

So and I read my number sentence from left to right, which means that I'm now showing the less than symbol.

Now it's time for your talk task.

For your talk task today, I would like you to complete each number sentence using the symbols for more than, less than and equal to, as you do this, say the sentence aloud.

The number is more than or less than, and the reason why.

The first one has been done for you.

I'll show you how to do it.

247 is less than 427.

This is because 247 has fewer hundreds than 427.

Pause the video whilst you complete this task.

How did you do? Let's go through the answers together.

742 is more than 424.

472 is more than 274.

247 is less than 272.

Great job.

Let's look at an example from the talk task.

What mistake has been made? Tell the screen.

Lets look together.

The hundreds digit is the same in both numbers.

So I need to compare the tens digit.

There are more tens in 272 than there are in 247.

Therefore 272 is the greatest number.

The crocodile should be eating the greatest number.

Look which way around the crocodile's mouth is.

How can I write this number in words? 247, notice how when I write my 47, I use an and.

272, after the hundreds, we use an and.

247 is less than 272.

342 is less than 546, because it has fewer hundreds.

The Hundred common has the greatest place value.

500 is greater than 300.

Can you write these numbers? Pause the video to have a guide.

How did he do? Lets look together, 342 is less than 546.

Great job.

Now it's time for your independent task.

For your independent task today, I would like you to draw the correct symbol in each of the equations below.

Then write the numbers in each equation in words.

You can draw the numbers using dienes to help.

There is also the more than and less than and equal to symbols here to help you.

Pause the video to complete your task.

Resume once you're finished.

Let's go through the answers.

273 is less than 732.

Notice how the crocodile is facing the greatest number.

Say your answers with me.

179 is less than 228.

538 is more than 534, and the final one, 175 is equal to 175.

Great job.

You've done a great job today.

I hope you've had fun.

Now it's time to complete your quiz.

hopefully see you again soon.

Bye.
