You compare to find out what is the same and what is different. You can compare numbers to find out if one is greater than or less than another.

You can order numbers from the smallest to the largest or from the largest to the smallest. The order stays the same when you count.

In this unit pupils will choose, use and compare appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height mass, temperature, capacity to the nearest appropriate unit.  In the future unit pupils will use weighing scales up to 1kg and tools to measure volume and capacity up to 1 litre. They will measure mass from 0 to above 1kg and measure volume from 0 to above 1 litre.

An ash tree is 22 m tall. A silver birch tree is 17 m tall. An oak tree is shorter than the ash tree but taller than the silver birch tree. How tall could the oak tree be?
