A bar model is a pictorial representation of a problem where bars are used to represent the known and unknown quantities.

The whole is all of something. It is complete.

A part is some but not all of something. It is an amount or section which, when combined with others, makes up the whole.

Mass is a measure of how much matter something contains. It is measured by how much something weighs. Mass can be measured in kg and g.

In this unit pupils will become familiar with different weighing scales up to 1kg and with the tools to measure volume and capacity up to 1 litre. They will measure mass from zero above 1kg using whole kg and grams and measure volume from zero above 1 litre using whole litres and ml. In the future unit pupils will use knowledge of 1000 to explain common measure conversions and solve problems.

In the prior unit pupils used and compared standard units to estimate and measure length/height, mass, temperature, capacity to the nearest unit. In this unit pupils will use weighing scales up to 1kg and measuring tools for volume and capacity up to 1 litre. They will measure mass from 0 to above 1kg using whole kg and grams and measure volume from 0 to above 1 litre using whole litres and ml

Look at the problem and bar models. Which bar model is an accurate representation of the problem?

Look at the bar model. Calculate how much heavier Sophia's whole cake is than Jacob's slice.

10 identical pebbles have a mass of 80 g. What is the mass of one pebble?

Look at the bar model. The mass of a conker is half the mass of the 10 pebbles. What is the mass of the conker?

Look at the bar model. How much greater is the mass of the 40 g conker than the mass of an 8 g pebble?

A rock is ten times heavier than a stone. The mass of the rock is 640 g. What is the mass of a stone?

Look at the picture of the apple before and after it had been partly eaten. At which point did it have the greatest mass?

The 600 g represents a part of the whole.

Look at this bar model. What does the 600 g represent?

Match the multiple of ten to the number of tens that it is composed from.

Match each whole number to the number that is half of it.
