Hi everybody, it's Miss Hill here, today we're going to be converting time between hours, minutes and seconds.

So before we start, let's put on your hats.

Tighten your ties and tell the computer.

Now I'm a mathematician and we also have our little time.

Here we have today's lesson agenda.

First off, we're going to be looking at, how can we measure time? Before moving onto that, lets explore converting time.

And then the quiz at the end of the session, before we can begin, please make sure you have a pencil, a piece of paper and a ruler.

How can we measure time? There are lots of different ways that we can measure time.

We might use a clock.

We might use a stop clock.

We might count in seconds.

You might count in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years.

Why do we have different units of time? Could we, for example, measure how long it takes to cook pasta in weeks? Could you measure it in seconds? Is that the most efficient way of measuring time? How would you measure, putting on a coat? Does it take seconds, minutes, hours? How about turning a page in a book? Is that going to take years? How about a summer holiday.

Usually you measure these in days, maybe in weeks if you're lucky.

The age of the baby, babies we usually measure their age in months and adults you measure in years.

We use different measures, to measure different amounts of time.

However, they all link to each other.

Here, we can see that one hour is the same as 60 seconds.

And one minute, apologies, one hour is the same as 60 minutes, and one minute is the same as 60 seconds.

So if we know that one hour is equal to 60 minutes and one minute is equal to 60 seconds, what else could we work out? For your mini tasks today, you are going to be matching up the equivalent times, but let's have a look at the first one together.

If I know that in one hour, there are 60 minutes, then I know that in two hours, there are 120 minutes and then I know that in three hours, there are 180 minutes, using this knowledge, match up the equivalent times.

Let's go through the answers together.

So one minute is the equivalent of 60 seconds, 60 minutes to see equivalent of one hour, two minutes is equivalent of 120 seconds.

120 minutes is equivalent to two hours.

Three minutes is equivalent to 180 seconds, four minutes is equivalent to 240 seconds, four hours is equivalent to 240 minutes and six minutes is equivalent to 360 seconds.

Well done, give yourself a big pat on the back.

Here we have 192 seconds in minutes.

I have to convert, sorry 192 seconds into minutes.

So the first thing I know, is that 60 seconds is equal to one minute, 120 seconds is equal to two minutes.

But I still need to keep going.

I'm not near 192 yet.

So 180 seconds is equal to three minutes.

And then I've got leftover 12 seconds because the difference between 180 and 192 seconds is 12 seconds, so 190 seconds in minutes is three minutes and 12 seconds.

Here we have another one, one hour and 17 minutes in minutes, pause the video and have a go yourself.

Great job, let's go through this together.

So if I know that one hour is equal to 60 minutes, I just need to add 60 and 17 together and that will give me 77 minutes.

Therefore, one hour and 17 minutes is equivalent to 77 minutes.

How about this one? Can you give it a try? Well done, so 263 minutes in hours.

So if I know that 60 minutes is equal to one hour and 120 minutes is equal to two hours.

180 minutes is equal to three hours, and 240 minutes is equal to four hours.

I can't add any more hours, because we would then go over 263.

And the difference between 263 and 240 is 23 minutes.

Therefore, I need to add 23 minutes and four hours together, which is equal to four hours and 23 minutes.

How about this one? Let's do this one together.

Here we have two minutes 42 seconds and we need to convert it into seconds.

So one minute is equal to 60 seconds, two minutes is equal to 120 seconds and then we just need to add 42 seconds so the answer is 162 seconds.

Therefore two minutes, 42 seconds in seconds is 162 seconds.
