In this unit pupils will make efficient choices about the order they solve an addition and subtraction problem in. In the future unit pupils will express and convert a quantity from an improper fraction to a mixed number and explain how a mixed number is converted into an improper fraction.

In the prior unit pupils estimated the position of numbers on a number line using fraction sense. They compared and ordered mixed numbers using fraction sense when the whole number and the numerator of the fractional part was the same. In this unit pupils will make efficient choices about the order they solve an addition and subtraction problem in.

Addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers (within a whole)

$$2{{6} \over {8}}$$ − $$ {4} \over {8}$$

Jacob has three and one-fifth metres of rope. Sofia has five and four-fifths metres of rope. How much more rope does Sofia have?
