A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction combined into one "mixed" number. For example: one and a half is a mixed number.

Compose and decompose mixed numbers

In this unit pupils will compose and decompose quantities made of whole numbers and fractional parts. In the future unit pupils will will estimate the position of numbers on a number line using fraction sense. They will compare and order mixed numbers using fraction sense when the whole number and the numerator of the fractional part is the same.

In the prior unit pupils identified equal parts when they did not look the same related to equivalence. They constructed a whole when given a part and the number of parts. In this unit pupils will compose and decompose quantities made of whole numbers and fractional parts.

Composition of fractions greater than one

Jacob has been given a three and a two-tenths metres length of wool. He cuts a piece of wool that is three metres and gives it to Sophia. How much wool does he have left?

Sofia has been given a container with nine and and three-quarters of water in it. After she has spilled it, there is three-quarters of a litre of water left. How much did she spill?

Look at this mixed number $$7{{2} \over {10}}$$ We say it as {{ }} and two one-tenths.

Look at this mixed number $$3{{4} \over {5}}$$ We say it as ‘three and four-{{ }}.
