Hi there, my name is Miss.

Darwish, and today's maths lesson, we are going to be looking at metrics of length.

So before we get started with the lesson, if you could just make sure that you are set in a nice, quiet environment away from any distractions, so we can start.

Okay, this lesson, we are going to start off just by discussing how we measure different objects and just measuring length in general.

And then we're going to move on to talk about metric units of length, what they are.

And then we're going to be looking at some conversions.

And then at the end of the session, there will be a quiz for you to complete on today's learning.

So for this session, you will need, a pencil, a sheet of paper, and a ruler.

If you want to go and grab up those things, then we can start.

Okay.

So we have different measurements.

Sometimes we measure things with a ruler, we we'll need a metre stick, and sometimes we might use estimates and say, it's about an arm's length, it's about a foot, it's about the length of a giraffe's neck, okay? So there are different types of units and measurements that we can use when we describe how long or short something is.

Now, in the UK here, we like to use metric units of length.

Okay? So officially in the UK, we use metric units of length and I'll show you what they are.

So examples of metric units are centimetres, millimetres, metres, kilometres, okay? These are all metric units, okay? Whereas non-examples, these are not metric units are things like inches.

So you might see inches written on your ruler.

In the UK, we don't tend to really talk about inches, okay? We stick to centimetres and millimetres.

And then also pounds we can say, but that's not something that we say here in this country, there might be other countries that don't use metric units of length, but we do here in the UK.

Okay.

So converting between metric units of length, let me just remove myself out of the way there.

So 10 millimetres is equivalent to one centimetre.

So if you looked at your ruler, you will see that one centimetre is the same as 10 millimetres, okay? 100 centimetres is the same as one metre.

1000 metres is equivalent or is the same as one kilometre.

So 10 millimetres is the same as one centimetre.

100 centimetres is the same as one metre.

And 1000 metres is the same as one kilometre, well done.

So converting between metric units of length.

Kilo means 1000.

So kilometre, that actually means 1000 metres.

It's so easy to remember that way.

Kilo means 1000.

So kilometre, kilometre is 1000 metres.

Okay.

And milli, would then be 1000th of one metre.

So there are 1000 millimetres in one metre.

Okay.

Let's have a bit of a practise first.

So three kilometres is equal to how many metres? Well done if you said 3000 metres.

So there are 1000 metres in one kilometre.

So in three kilometres, that is the equivalent of 3000 metres.

What about six and a half metres? How many centimetres are there in 6.

5 metres? And what's your answer? 650 centimetres.

So six and a half metres or 6.

5 metres, is equivalent or it's the same as 650 centimetres.

Well done.

Okay.

What about 640 centimetres? How many metres in 640 centimetres? 6.

4 metres, well done.

So 640 divided by 100 would be 6.

4 metres.

Okay.

Now I'm going to give you a few seconds, just jot these down and then we'll move on.

So 230 centimetres is equal to how many metres? Jot it down for me.

420 centimetres is the same as how many metres? Quickly jot it down.

And 8,700 centimetres is the same as how many metres? Okay, check over that.

I'm going to give you five seconds.

Okay.

Let's reveal the answer.

So when we are converting centimetres to metres, we divide by 100.

So from the small measurement to the bigger measurement we divide.

So 230 centimetres, we would then divide it by 100 it's 2.

3 metres.

420 centimetres divided by 100, give us 4.

2 metres.

And 8,700 centimetres divide by 100 would give us 87 metres, well done.

Okay.

Now I'm going to give you some time, have a look at this.

What about kilometres to metres? So before we were going from small, centimetres to metres, small to big we divided, This time we go from big to small, kilometres to metres.

I'll give you 10 seconds to have a go.

I'll Just write down some answers and then we'll go through them together.

Okay, let's have a look.

So kilometres to metres, remember kilo means, what does kilo mean? 1000, well done.

So we are multiplying by 1000.

So nine kilometres is equivalent to 9,000 metres.

16 kilometres is equivalent to 16,000 metres, 230 kilometres is equivalent to 230,000 metres, well done.

Okay.

Now let's have a look at this problem, Anthony and Xavier compete in the long jump, okay? So there's Anthony, there's Xavier, and they compete in the long jump.

Anthony jumps 1.

94 metres.

Xavier jumps 201 centimetres.

So how far is Anthony's jump? 1.

94 metres.

And what about Xavier? 201 centimetres.

Okay.

How much further does Xavier jump than Anthony.

So we can see 1.

94 metres is Antony, 201 centimetres is Xavier.

We can see that Xavier's jump was longer, but by how much? So we've got one in metres, and one in centimetres.

I'll give you some thinking time, read that through.

If you want to jot anything down, do that before I go and reveal the answer, and before we work through it together.

Okay.

So we've got Anthony 1.

94 metres, which is 194 centimetres.

And then we've got Xavier, who's jump was 2.

01 metres, which is 201 centimetres.

So now we've got 194 centimetres to compare against 201 centimetre.

So we can do a comparison and see the difference.

So 201 take away 194, is equal to seven centimetres.

Okay, well done.

Right.

Now is time for you to pause the video and have a go at the independent task.

Once you've had a go check for your work and then come back and we will go through the answers together, goood luck.

Okay, welcome back.

How did you find those? Okay, let's check together.

If you want to get yourself like a pen to mark with.

Okay.

So you had a conversion table and you have to complete it below.

So we had 300 millimetres is equivalent to 30 centimetres.

900 millimetres is equivalent to 90 centimetres.

400 centimetres is equivalent to four metres.

And 720 centimetres is equivalent to 7.

2 metres.

Okay.

And then, 40 centimetres is equal to 400 millimetres.

70 centimetres is equivalent to 700 millimetres.

Nine metres is equivalent to 900 centimetres.

8.

6 metres is equivalent to 860 centimetres.

Now, it's important that when you're doing this, that maybe you can spot some kind of pattern.

If I know that 300 millimetres is equivalent to 30 centimetres, then 900 millimetres would be equivalent to 90 centimetres.

And it's the same as if I said to you, 8.

6 metres is the same as 860 centimetres.

What if it was 7.

6 metres? That would be 760 centimetres, or 2.

1 metres, 210 metres, okay? So it's all, sometimes when we do these kind of conversions, it's all about spotting a pattern.

Okay, well done if you got those right, and give yourself a really big tick.

Okay.

If you would like to share your work with us here at Oak National, then please do ask your parents or your carer to share your work for you on Twitter, tagging @OakNational and to use the hashtag #LearnwithOak.

Now I just want to say a really big well done on all the fantastic learning that you have done today, you should be proud of yourselves.

I'm just going to leave you to go and complete the quiz, and I'm going to say good luck.
