When something is divided, it is split into equal parts or groups.

Equal parts can be combined to make a whole.

The numerator is the top number in a fraction and shows how many equal parts we have.

The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction and shows how many equal parts the whole has been divided into.

They will  explain the relationship within families of equivalent fractions and use their knowledge of common equivalents to compare fractions with decimals. In the future unit pupils will explain how to write a fraction in its simplest form when solving addition and subtraction problems.
