In this unit pupils will explain what area is and measure using counting as a strategy. They will make different shapes with the same area and compare the area of different shapes. In the future unit pupils will calculate the area of a rectangle using multiplication and use their knowledge of area to solve problems.

In the prior unit pupils completed and composed symmetrical shapes from two congruent shapes and investigated lines of symmetry in 2D shapes. In this unit pupils will explain what area is and measure using counting as a strategy. They will make different shapes with the same area and compare the area of different shapes.

Understand the concept of area

A shape with half the area of this shape would have an area of {{  }} square units. 

A shape with double the area of this shape would have an area of {{  }} square units. 

Part of this rectangle is covered by spilled tea. What is the area of the whole shape in square units?  

It is impossible to tell, because you cannot see the square units.

Add all of the full square units then combine the partial square units (6 + 2).

Add all of the squares with green in them (10)

Subtract the triangles' area (4) from the rectangle surrounding the shape (12) 

Make a square from the white bits (4) and subtract from the 3 x 4 rectangle.

Select all of the strategies that could be used to calculate the area of the shape.
