Like terms are terms that have the same set of variables and corresponding exponents.

Simplifying is to write an expression in a more efficient and compact form without affecting the value of the original expression. Fully simplifying means the expression cannot be simplified further.

In this unit, pupils learnt to solve quadratic equations by factorising and this skill will be required in the future unit through manipulating two simultaneous equations to find the solutions. For pupils studying the higher content, solving quadratic equations is required if one of the simultaneous equations is a quadratic.

In the prior unit, pupils used the distributive law to find the product of two binomials. In algebraic manipulation, pupils use apply this knowledge in order to factorise quadratics.

Simplify the following: $$3y - 2y + y = \square y$$

Simplify the following: $$5x + 5 - 3x = \square x + 5$$

Simplify the following: $$5(x - 2) - 2(x - 2) = \square(x - 2)$$

Simplify the following: $$7(3x + 4) - (3x + 4) = \square(3x + 4) $$

Simplify the following: $$7(x + 2) - 5(x + 2) = \square(x + 2)$$

Collect the following like terms: $$3a + 5a = \square a$$

Simplify the following: $$4b - 2b = \square b$$

Simplify the following: $$7d - 4(d+2)= 3d$${{}}

Simplify the following: $$9f - 5f = \square f$$

Simplify the following: $$5j - 2j +j^2= \square$$
