Hello, my name is Mr. Clasper, and today we are going to be looking at distance time graphs.
Let's have a look at this example of a distance time graph.
If we look at our first line segment, this covers from 12:00 PM until 12:30 PM, as it's halfway between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM.
And this covers 50 kilometres.
Let's take a look at this distance time graph.
The first line segment tells us that in half an hour or 30 minutes, we covered 50 kilometres.
In the next half an hour, we covered no distance.
So this means that we did not move from 12:30 until 1:00.
From 1:00 until 2:15, we covered 75 kilometres.
Let's take a look at this journey.
What's different about this graph compared with our previous graph? This graph is different as from 2:15 PM, our graph travels downwards.
This means that we're travelling back towards our starting point.
So if we start from home at 12:00 and reach our final destination at 2:15, then at 2:15, we've travelled back to our original starting point.
Here's an example of a question you might see related to distance time graphs.
So we need to take all of the information given and place it onto a distance time graph.
As Ellie leaves the house at 10:00 AM, that means our graph will also start from 10:00 AM.
And at this point we've covered zero metres, so it must start from the X axis.
She travels 500 metres and takes 10 minutes.
So this means the next part of my graph must go up to 500 metres and across 10 minutes.
The next part of my question says she stops to talk to her gran for 20 minutes.
Because she stops, this means she hasn't covered any extra distance.
However, the time has still progressed by 20 minutes.
She then walks to her friend's house, which is a further one kilometre from her house.
This takes her 30 minutes.
One kilometre is equal to 1000 metres.
So she covers 1000 metres in 30 minutes.
She stays with her friend for 40 minutes.
So again, this means that no distance is covered in the space of 40 minutes.
She then walks back home and arrives home at noon.

So just make sure you read from the graph carefully.
So you should have found out that after two hours, Yasmin travelled 55 miles.
And if we look at the graph, we can see that our flat line is between 60 and 50.
And for part B, how far from home was she at 4:30? And she was 33 miles.

If we take a look at part C, question is, how long does she stopped? So this is represented by the horizontal line on our graph, and she stopped for one hour and 30 minutes from 2:00, till 3:30.

How long did the journey take? In total, the journey took six hours.
So it started at 12:00 PM and finished at 6:00 PM.
And what is the total distance she drives? She drives a total of 110 miles.

So your graph should have a positive gradient followed by a horizontal line, followed by another positive gradient.
