Today, we are going to learn to remind ourselves what pulse is, to create a short pulse pattern using our bodies, to find patterns in music, to see how patterns fit into the pulse.

In this lesson, you will need your body.

Give us a wave.

Your voice.

Say hello.

A teddy or toy, a pencil and some paper.

What is the pulse in music? Is it the heartbeat of the music, the instruments used in the music, the words of the song, or the person singing the song? That's right.

It's the heartbeat of the music.

We're going to make a pulse pattern now, and it's going to go like this.

Clap, stamp, clap, stamp.

Clap, stamp, clap, stamp.

I'm going to do that for four beats, and then I'm going to start singing "Hot Cross Buns." I'll do it first.

Our new song today is called "Swallows in the Sunshine." It's a lovely song about some birds that fly really high in the sky like this and they make beautiful patterns as they fly.

Can you see that, underneath the four heartbeats of this song, there is a pattern made up of little squares? That pattern is called the rhythm.

We're going to have a go at clapping it now.

We need to blow the words of the song onto our hands.

Just like this.

Once you've done that, your hands are going to clap in time to what your voice is singing.

I'll do it first.

You can do it with me afterwards.

♪ Way up high ♪ ♪ Swallows fly ♪ ♪ Diving, racing, sunbeam chasing ♪ ♪ Way up high ♪ Now it's your turn to join in.

♪ Ready ♪ ♪ Way up high ♪ ♪ Swallows fly ♪ ♪ Diving, racing, sunbeam chasing ♪ ♪ Way up high ♪ Which pattern matches "Swallows" best? That's right.

It's the first one.

Time to listen to some music now.

I wonder how many different ways you can move your body in time to the beat.

This piece of music is called "Russian Dance." It's from a ballet called "The Nutcracker" and it's by a composer called Tchaikovsky.

Today, we have reminded ourselves was pulse was, created a short pulse pattern using our bodies, found patterns in music, and seen how patterns fit into the pulse.
