If you haven't done already, make sure you have done lesson one and lesson two, because we've already gone over pulse.

In lesson three, we are going to find the pulse in a piece of music.

We're going to understand what rhythm is.

We're going to be matching words to the rhythm, and moving between pulse and rhythm.

In this lesson, you will need some paper and the worksheet, which is provided with this lesson, a pencil, and you guessed it your brain.

So let's recap.

What is pulse? I'm going to give you a few seconds to have a think.

In lesson one and two, we learnt that in a piece of music there is a steady beat called a pulse.

It is like a heartbeat that keeps beating throughout.

We can tap along to different pieces of music and find the pulse.

Activity one, to find the pulse in a piece of music.

Before we go with this lessons learning, let's have a recap.

Activity two, matching words to the pulse.

Okay, so in lesson two we learnt the song, "Hey hey look at me." I want you to think about it and look at your screen.

What do you notice about the third beat? How many words are there? Have a listen.

♪ Look at ♪ We call this a rhythm.

When we're matching sounds to heartbeats.

Okay, we are going to learn another song now called "Copy Cat".

For this one we're going to be really thinking about the rhythm.

I'm going to sing it fast.

This time I'm going to clap the rhythm alone.

Okay, so onto our written activity now.

For this activity, you are going to match the words with the rhythm.

Remember to clap the rhythm of the word first.

How many claps did you do? For example, copy, is two claps.

So you are going to add two crosses into the heart.

For your challenge, can you perform the song whilst clapping the rhythm at the same time? Pause the video to complete your task, when you have finished resume the video.

Okay, so here are the answers to the rhythm writing for "Copy Cat".

Have a look at your worksheet, or if you did it on paper, that's also fine too.

And see if your crosses match the ones on my screen now.

Did you get them all right? Let's go through it.

Two syllables.

And then it's the same.

♪ On the ♪ Now that's the tricky one, isn't it? Because there are two words.

If we tap the pulse to it.

♪ Sitting on the ♪ The next one is door on the next heartbeat, isn't it? So they have to share a beat.

That means that we don't actually need to say anything.

We're only going to think the words.

What is the difference between a pulse and a rhythm? Have a think about what you would say about each word.

A rhythm is the pattern of different sounds on each beat.

For example, copy has two sounds, cat only has one.

The pulse is a steady heartbeat that carries on throughout a piece of music.

Activity four, moving between pulse and rhythm.

Okay, for our last activity, we are going to practise moving between pulse and rhythm.

And when I was clapping, I was doing the rhythm.

So I was matching all of the sounds in the words to the heartbeats.
