Hi everybody, my name is Mr. Palekar.
Welcome to music.
I am super excited to be joining you on our journey of musical adventure, which starts with lesson one.
Let's take a look at what we're going to be learning.
Today we are going to be learning about finding the pulse, we're going to be learning about clapping the rhythm, we are going to learn a new chant and clap the pulse, and we are going to be using body percussion with the rhythm as well.
For this lesson, you will need some headphones, if you have some headphones, and if you don't have any headphones, don't panic.
You just need to find somewhere that you can work and you're not disturbing anybody and in that somewhere that you can concentrate.
You will also need a pencil and paper for you to make any notes, if that helps you to remember, and you are going to need your hands and your bodies.
If you would like, if you have any stationary like pens at home, and you want to be able to tap on your table or on a mug, make sure that you have them handy and nearby.
Our first activity today is a chant called "Get with the Flow." And it sounds something like this: ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ This time we're going to try it again, but I'm going to go first.
If I have my hands like this, it's my turn, and then when I point over to you, it's your turn to say it back to me.
Here we go.
My turn first.
♪ Ready, off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Nice work, let's try that one more time.
Here we go.
My turn first, ♪ Ready, here we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Pretty good job.
One more time.
Ready, my turn first.
♪ Ready, and off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, go with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, go with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Great job! Pause the video now so that you can practise chanting by yourself.
If you want to practise with me, rewind 20 seconds, and we'll do it together.
When you're ready to resume, click the play button.
Well done learning our "Get with the Flow" chant.
You're going to need it a little bit later, so keep it in your memory.
Now, we're going to look at, what is pulse? Now, in any piece of music, there is a steady beat called a pulse.
It's like a beating heartbeat, which keeps on beating throughout, it is steady.
And we can tap along to different pieces of music and find that pulse.
When you listen to music, often, you'll find yourself tapping, or stomping, or clapping, or dancing to the pulse of the music.
We're going to give it a go with a few pieces of music.
You need to listen to each song, and as soon as you can, as soon as you recognise where the pulse is, see if you can clap, or pat, or tap the pulse along with the music.
Here we go.
Ready to clap along with each of the pieces of music.
Here we go.
♪ Yeah, you got that yummy, yummy ♪ ♪ Yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy ♪ ♪ Yeah, you got that yummy, yummy ♪ ♪ Yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy ♪ ♪ Say the word, on my way ♪ ♪ Yeah babe, yeah babe, yeah babe ♪ ♪ Any night, any day ♪ ♪ Say the word, on my way ♪ ♪ Yeah babe, yeah babe, yeah babe ♪ ♪ In the morning or late ♪ ♪ Say the word, on my way ♪ ♪ Bona fide stallion ♪ Next one.
♪ Can we pretend that aeroplanes in the night sky ♪ ♪ Are like shootin' stars ♪ ♪ I could really use a wish right now ♪ Keep clapping to the beat ♪ Wish right now, wish right now ♪ ♪ Can we pretend that aeroplanes in the night sky ♪ ♪ Are like shootin' stars ♪ ♪ I could really use a wish right now ♪ ♪ Wish right now, wish right now ♪ ♪ Yeah ♪ Yeah ♪ I could use a dream or a genie or a wish ♪ ♪ To go back to a place much simpler ♪ Next track.
Let's see if you can get that pulse quicker than I can.
Here we go.
♪ 'Cause baby, you're a firework ♪ ♪ Come on, show 'em what you're worth ♪ ♪ Make 'em go, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ As you shoot across the sky ♪ ♪ Baby, you're a firework ♪ ♪ Come on, let your colours burst ♪ ♪ Make 'em go, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ You're going to leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe ♪ Great job.
Last one, here we go.
Are you going to beat me? ♪ Hey, nothing's too good for my baby ♪ ♪ Nothing's too good for my girl ♪ ♪ Nothing's too good for my baby ♪ ♪ Oh, no, for my girl ♪ ♪ I'm the luckiest guy in the world ♪ ♪ 'Cause I've got one pearl of a girl ♪ ♪ For my baby I work part-time ♪ Nice, here's a bonus one for you.
Let's see if you can clap the pulse.
♪ Because I'm happy ♪ ♪ Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof ♪ ♪ Because I'm happy ♪ ♪ Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth ♪ ♪ Because I'm happy ♪ ♪ Clap along if you know what happiness is to you ♪ ♪ Because I'm happy ♪ ♪ Clap along if you feel like that's what you want to do ♪ ♪ Here come bad news, talking this ♪ Great job at clapping to the pulse in those pieces of music.
So we're going to need that chant from before, "Get with the Flow," that was our chant.
Let's see if we can remember it.
My turn first.
♪ One, two, off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Well remembered.
But this time we're going to add the pulse underneath our lyrics.
We're going to click the pulse.
If you don't want to click, you can clap the pulse, we can pat the pulse all the way through our piece at the same time as chanting.
Remember, it's my turn first, and then you're going to say it after me.
Here we go.
One, two, have you got that pulse ready? Maybe you can do with me.
♪ One, two, off we go ♪ ♪ And one, two, three, four ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Well done! Let's try it one more time, ready? Are you ready? Make sure that you have your clicking fingers, or your patting hands ready to click or pat the beat.
Here we go.
♪ One, two, off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Great job! Now we're going to do a role reversal.
Instead of me leading, it is up to you to lead.
So you are going to say the words first, and then I am going to echo.
So you are going to go first, and then I'm going to go after.
Here we go.
Can you remember the first words? ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ Here we go.
Four clicks and then you're in.
♪ One, two, off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Really well done, that's a bit tricky.
Pause the video now, and make sure that you practise saying the chant, and clicking or patting to the pulse of the music.
If you want to rewind 20 seconds so you can practise with me, do that now.
And when you're ready to resume, click play.
Great job at chanting and tapping the pulse to the music.
We are now moving onto rhythm.
Rhythm is how we organise different lengths of sounds.
And it can be described as a pattern of short and long sounds.
Here's my pulse again, One, two, three, four.
I'm now going to play the rhythm on my chest, which uses short and long sounds.
You can tell me which is more exciting.
Is it the pulse or the rhythm? Here we go.
I hope you agree it was definitely the rhythm.
The rhythm is the exciting world of patterns of different lengths of sounds.
It's described as how we organise different lengths of sounds.
That's rhythm.
Let's try to clap our rhythm of our chant, "Get with the Flow." My turn first, and then your turn.
Make sure you have your hands ready.
One, two, off we go.
♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Good, let's try that one more time.
Are you ready? ♪ One, two, off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Fantastic.
We're going to do a role reversal, which means that you are going to go first, then I'm going to go second.
For clicks and then you are in.
Remember your first words, hey, you, get with the flow.
Here we go, are you ready to clap the rhythm? You're starting, ♪ One, two, off you go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Great job, one more time.

♪ One, two, and off we go ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Hey, you, get with the flow ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Super job.
You have noticed that in our chant, there are some very special lines, there are two very special lines.
The very last line says, click, clap and off we go.
And we have some actions for that, click, we click with both hands, clap, we clap together, and off we go, we go, off we go, so we slide our hands together, off we go.
It sounds like this: ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ Try it with me.
Here we go! ♪ Click, clap and off we go ♪ One more time, ready? Here we go.
♪ Click ♪ ♪ Clap, and off we go ♪ Make sure that our, off we go, lasts for all of those words.

But actually, our third line has a very special set of action as well.
It says, clap your hands to the beat.
And that's exactly what we're going to do.
When we sing that line, we're going to go, ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Try it with me, off we go ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ One more time, ready, here we go ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ ♪ Clap your hands to the beat ♪ Let's try it all the way through.

Hmm, hang on a second.
We don't always have to clap our hands for that third line.
What else could we do? Okay, maybe we could , we could click our fingers.
Let's try clicking our fingers.
How would that sound? Hmm, touch the sky then reach down low, ♪ Click our fingers to the beat ♪ ♪ So click our fingers to the beat ♪ ♪ Try it with me, here we go ♪ ♪ Click our fingers to the beat ♪ ♪ Click our fingers to the beat ♪ Good, let's see if we can click our fingers to the beat instead of clapping our hands.

Instead of clapping the rhythm on our second line, our 'touch the sky then reach down low,' I'm going to touch the sky by tapping my head, touch the sky, and then I'm going to reach down low by tapping my chest.
Reach down low, ♪ Touch the sky then reach down low.

There is a rhythm that is forbidden, and it sounds like this: ♪ Don't clap this one back ♪ Say it and clap it again.
♪ Don't clap this one back ♪ This time, I'm just going to clap it.
