Hi everybody.

My name is Mr. Palekar and welcome to music.

This unit is all about rhythm and how we can use it to make our own music.

We're going to be learning about reading rhythms, about different types of notes, and we're going to be learning some new pieces of music as well.

In today's lesson, we are going to look at a chant called "Engine Engine Number Nine", we are going to explore some new notes and we're going to read some rhythms and we are going to learn another new chant and rhythm.

For this lesson, you will need some headphones, but if you don't have any headphones, don't worry.

Just make sure that you are somewhere where you can concentrate and not be disturbed.

You will need a pencil and paper if you would like to take any notes.

You will finally need your hands because you are going to be needing them to clap some rhythms. Engine Number Nine.

This is our very first chant, so please make sure that you're sitting up straight or you're standing up and making sure that you're ready to use your voice.

Finding the pulse.

In any piece of music, there is a steady beat called a pulse.

It's like a beating heartbeat, which keeps on beating throughout.

It is steady.

And we can tap along to different pieces of music and find that pulse.

When you listen to music, often, you'll find yourself tapping or stomping or clapping or dancing to the pulse of the music.

We're going to give it a go with a few pieces of music.

You need to listen to each song, and as soon as you can, as you recognise where the pulse is, see if you can clap or pat or tap the pulse along with the music.

Rhythm is how we organise different lengths of sounds, and it can be described as a pattern of short and long sounds.

Here's my pulse again.

I'm now going to play the rhythm on my chest, which uses short and long sounds.

You can tell me which is more exciting, is it the pulse or the rhythm? Here we go.

I hope you agree, it was definitely the rhythm.

The rhythm is the exciting world of patterns of different lengths of sounds.

It is described as how we organise different lengths of sounds, that's rhythm.

Musical notes.

The notes.

Now the musical notes that we are going to be looking at is how we write the notes.

The lengths of sounds, the different rhythms. This is our very first note.

It is called "ta" my turn, and then your turn.

Ta, ready, your turn.

Ta, very good.

I'm going to clap on my ta, ready ta.

Ready? One, two, listen first, my turn here I go, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four.

When you're reading each of the notes, we need to make sure that you're watching every single note that goes past.

Number three is that we are going to swallow our tas, I'm going to say it loudly in our head, and we're going to clap the tas, ready? One, two, three, here we go.

So that is the order of how we're going to read our rhythms. We're going to say the notes first, ta, ta, ta, ta.

And finally, we're going to clap only, but make sure we are saying it in our head.

Let's take a look at another rhythm.

Hmm, these are not tas because they are joined at the very top.

Can you remember what they are called? Brilliant, each of these are ti-ti.
