Hello everybody.
My name is Mr. Palekar and welcome back to music.
If you just heard some music being played, don't worry.
That is all part of our lesson today.
Let's take a look at what we're going to do.
Now in this lesson, we are going to recap all Oliver Twist from last lesson, which has six beats in a bar.
We are going to explore music with five beats in a bar and we're going to clap to music, which has five beats in a bar.
We are also going to learn a new piece, which has five beats in a bar.
Now for this lesson, you will need some headphones, if you have some, if you don't, don't worry.
Just make sure that you are somewhere quiet, where you won't be disturbed and where you can concentrate.
You'll need a pencil and some paper.
If you would like to write anything down and make some notes and you'll need your hands, your bodies and your voices.
Let's get started with Oliver Twist.
My turn.
Oliver twist, you can't do this.
So what's the use of trying? Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
My turn and then your turn Oliver twist, you can't do this.
Oliver twist, you can't do this.
So what's the use of trying? So what's the use of trying? Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
Good, let's stick with a couple of those lines together.
My turn first.
Here I go.
Oliver twist, you can't do this.
So what's their use of trying? Oliver Twist, you can't do this.
So what's the use of trying? Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
Touch your knees, touch your toes Clap your hands and away you go.
Good, let's do it all the way through.
One, two, off we go.
Oliver Twist, you can't do this.
So what's the use of trying? Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
One more time.
Oliver Twist, you can't do this.
So was the use of trying? Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
Good job.
Okay, so let's add in our body percussion, so that we can keep a track of the pulse in the music.
We're going to have our bars and they are separated, by our bar lines.
A bar and then a bar line.
A bar and then a bar line.
We also got our six beats in every single bar.
And you'll notice that the first beat is a little bit bigger because we are going to pat a little bit harder on that first beat, which is also called our downbeat.
One, two, three, four, five six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
We're going to put our body percussion in.
You can see that our clap, which is on beat number four, has a little circle around it.
And that's because we are also going to clap a little bit harder on that beat because that way we can separate our bar into three beats at a time.
So one, two, three, four, five, six.
So one, two, three, all together.
Four, five, six all together.
Our fourth beat is strong, but it's not as strong as our down beat, which is always the strongest beat you.
Here we go.
Let's see if we can try pat clicking and clapping it all the way through.
Remember we're starting on our chest for the first beat.
Click, click for the second and third beat and clapping on the fourth beat and then click, click four, five and six.
Nice and even.
One, two, three, four, five, six, ready and off we go.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
Good, one more time, ready, one, two, three, off we go.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
Good.
We also know that we don't have to click our beats two, three, and beats five and six.
We can count it with just our pat and our clap.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
But I will challenge you to see if he can put those clicks in on the other beats as well.
Let's try it one more time.
One, two, three, off we go.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
Well done, now we know that there are six beats in every single bar, so we don't need to put all of those heartbeats above every single bar.
We can get rid of those and we can put a number six at the very start of our music, which tells us that every bar is going to have six beats.
Let's go back to our lyrics.
Let's go back to our words for the chant, okay? And let's see if we can pat, click, click, clap, to the pulse while chanting to Oliver Twist okay, so you can start with me.
One, two, three, four, five, six, One, carry on Ready, and we off we go.
Oliver Twist, you can't do this So what's the use of trying? Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
Good.
Now, remember we're only going to do our pulse up until the second line.
And then we've got different actions.
So it looks something like this.
Oliver Twist, you can't do this, so what's the use of trying? Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
So we've got our pulse down.
That was really good, so we go, one, two, three, four, five, six.
Or, one, two, three four, five, six.
Whichever is best for you, but again, I'm challenging you to see if you can do the clicks as well.
My turn.
I'm going to use my table as my knees and my seat as my toes, but I would love to see that you are using your actual knees and your actual toes.
Touch your knees, Touch your toes, ready and off you go.
Touch your knees touch your toes.
Good, one more time, off we go.
Touch your knees.
Touch your toes.
The next part goes, clap your hands and away you go.
One more time and off you go.
Clap your hands and away you go.
Let's do those last two lines together.
So touch your knees.
Touch your toes.
Clap your hands.
And away you go.
Ready, one, two, and off we go.
Touch your knees.
Touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
One more time, ready, and off we go.
Touch your knees.
Touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
Let's see if we can put it all the way through from the top.
Here we go.
One and then two and off we go, Oliver Twist.
You can't do this.
So what's the use of trying? Touch your knees.
Touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
We're going to do it one more time.
Get ready, one, and a two, and a off we go.
Oliver Twist, you can't do this.
So what's the use of trying Touch your knees, touch your toes.
Clap your hands and away you go.
Well done.
Pause the video now, so that you can practise chanting Oliver Twist.
Pat, click and clap to the pulse.
And remember to pat your chest harder on the first beat, the downbeat of every bar.
If you would like to practise again together, rewind 20 seconds and we can go through each of the steps.
When you're ready to continue, click the play button.
Time signatures, five beats in a bar.
When we think about time signatures, we've done it, Two beats in the bar, three beats in the bar, four beats in the bar and six beats in a bar.
But today we are looking at five beats in a bar, which is maybe a little bit less common than the other time signatures.
With five beats in a bar, we still going to have our first beat as our downbeat.
So one, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Good, let's see if you can say it.
And I would like to see if you can tap your head on number one.
Here we go.
One, two, three and we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One more time off we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Good, when we have five beats, we can divide it in different ways.
So we can have two beats plus three beats, which is still five beats together, but we can think of it in a slightly different way.
So we put emphasis, we put a stronger beat in different places.
Let me show you how.
For our two beats, we have One, two.
And the then for our three beats, we have one, two, three.
Together, they make five beats, but when we count it, we can go, one, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
Try it, ready? Off we go.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
And you will have noticed that I'm clapping a little bit harder on the downbeat for the very first beat and also the group of three.
So, one, two, one, two, three.
Try it one more time.
Ready, and off we go.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
One, two, one, two, three.
So that's one way of thinking about five beats in a bar, but the other way is if we switch those two numbers around.
So instead of having two plus three, we have three plus two.
We just means that we are changing where we put our strong beats.
So we're going to have one, two, three, plus one, two.
And it sounds like this, One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
Try it with me off we go.
One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
Good, this is the type of five beats in a bar that we're going to use in this last sentence.
Try it one more time.
One, two, three, off we go.
One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
One, two, three, one, two.
Good.
Okay, now we're going to get rid of the one, two, but we're going to think of those last two beats as separate from our one, two, three.
So it's going to go one, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Try it with me, off we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Nice, okay, let's move that four and five to another part of our body.
I'm going to use my chest.
So, one, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Ready and off we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Are you counting out loud to make sure that you're counting as well.
One, two, three off we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Good job.
Right, not just going to use our claps and our chest.
We're going to use our different body parts.
Now, these are the different symbols that we're going to use today.
If you see a circle with an H in, it is our way heads.
So head is going to be on our downbeat.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Our S with the curves at the top are our shoulders.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Our K, you might have already realised is going to be our knees.
I'm going to use my table cause I can't reach my knees.
One, two, three, four, five.
One two, three, four, five.
Let's just try that.
One, two, three, four, five, ready and off we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One more time, here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Good, the last two beats, which are our own two beats by themselves in a way.
It goes, clap, click.
Clap, click.
So let's try, four, five.
Ready? Four, five.
One more time.
Four, five.
And that brings us all the way back to one.
Let's try four, five, one.
Here we go.
Four, five, one.
Good, let's try it all the way through.
So it's going to look like this.
One, two, three, four, five.
And then ready to go back onto our one.
Here we go.
I'm going to give you five beats in and then we are going to start.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
And again, ready, here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
Two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
And again, here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
Okay, good.
Let's do it four times in a row now.
You ready? If you get lost for whatever reason, remember that that burst beat, that downbeat always comes back around.
So it makes sure that you are ready to come back to our head, back to our downbeat when you can.
Here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
And this is how we count in five.
One, two, three, And remember, we need to tap our downbeat a little bit harder, so when you hit your head, don't hurt yourself, just make sure that you tap it a little bit harder, or you say it, a little bit louder.
Ready.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
And because we are having three beats plus two beats, we are going to also make our fourth beat a little bit stronger.
So it sounds like, one, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Try it, ready, one, two, three, here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Make sure you master that.
Make sure you get it perfect before you move to our next section.
So if you need to pause the video and practise do that now.
Okay, we can get rid of our heartbeats and we can make sure that there are five beats at the beginning of every single bar, but I'm not going to do that just yet, because I want to see if you can remember where our heads, shoulders, knees, clap and click are going to go.
So I'm going to leave it as it is just for now.
Okay, we're going to put some music on and I want to see if you can find the pulse and you can find the downbeat of every piece.
And pat, click and clap to the pulse.
Two, three, four, five, and say each beat.
Here we go.
See the first one's a good one.
It's quite quick.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Well done, that was pretty.
Let's try our next one.
Next piece of music.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three.
One.
One.
Four, five.
One.
Four, five.
Well done, especially if you got there faster than I did.
Okay, let's see if we can do our bonus track.
Here we go.
Good luck and if you can get there faster than I can, hold on.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Well done.
That is tricky, so let's see if we can practise that again.
Pause the video now so that you can practise counting to the pulse of the music.
Try to pat click and clap to the pulse of the bonus track.
Rewind the video 20 seconds, so that we can practise again together.
When you're ready to continue click the play button.
Body percussion, five beats in a bar.
Now this is going to be our piece of the day, which uses five beats in a bar but it's something that we are going to chant.
And it's something that we're going to add different body percussion actions to as well.
My turn first.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Try it, ready off you go.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
You'll see on the screen that we have to say, "I want to make some music" three times.
Let's try it one more time.
I want to make some music.
Ready and off you go.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Stop.
The last line goes like this.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to stop.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music happen.
I'm going to count to five and then you can have a try.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music happen.
One more time.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music happen.
One time off you go.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, so if we say all the way through, it sounds like this.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Try it with me, ready, after five.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Great, okay, well, let's go back to our pulse.
So this is how we do our pulse.
Our head, our shoulders, our knees, clap and click.
One, two, three, four, five.
Join in when you can.
One, one, two, three, four, five.
Okay, carry on going.
You're not going to go any faster than this, okay? One, two, three, four, five.
And we're going to chant I want to make some music.
Ready? After five.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Last one.
Want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
One more time, here we go.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, last time.
Ready, one, two, three, four, five.
One, two, off we go.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good stuff.
Okay, let's go back to our beats in a bar, but actually we're going to change it.
Instead of patting and clicking, clapping the pulse, we want to get to know the rhythm a little bit more.
So here are our words and here is our bar.
We're going to add some body percussion.
Remember those symbols? So we're going to clap on the downbeat now.
We're going to go, I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Try that now, off you go.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Good.
Can you remember what those star symbols are, with the C inside? Yeah, they are our chest.
So, I want to.
I want to.
Try it, one, two, three, four, five.
I want to.
Ready and again.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
make some Okay, good.
The stars are our clicks So it's going to go this.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some.
Let's try it.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Let's try a little bit slower.
Ready, and, I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Good, I can see that some of you are ready, have realised that our last two beats, the music, has a K inside and that K is for our knees.
My turn, first, music.
Nice and easy.
Music.
Off you go, music.
My turn, music Your turn, music Good, so looks and sounds like this.
I want to make some music.
Let's try that really slowly together, ready? One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
And again, ready? One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
Good, last time.
Now, one, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
A bit faster now, ready? One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
Good, one more time a bit faster.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
Good, one more time, off we go.
I want to make some music.
Very nice.
Now we do that three times, remember? So, let's do it three times in a row.
Here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
Good, should we try that again? Here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
But we have our last line as well.
It looks like this.
I want to make some music happen.
My turn.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music happen.
Say that once for me, ready? My turn and then your turn.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, one more time.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music happen.
Let's add in our body percussion for this line.
Remember this only happens once.
Okay.
So we've got a bar.
I, looks the same, looks the same, looks the same.
Changes on the last two words, music happen.
Okay, let's try.
I want to make some Try that, my turn first.
I want to make some Ready, off you go.
I want to make some So that's exactly the same as our first line, but music happen goes, music So we're going to do a hand each.
Music, on our knees.
Music, and then our C, remember is our chest.
Music happen.
Music happen.
And again.
Music happen.
Music happen.
Your turn.
Music happen.
Music happen.
Good, so if we do that last line really slowly, it looks and sounds like this.
I want to make some music happen.
Try it with me, really nice and slowly.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music happen.
Remember it's only the last few words.
Music happen, that change.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, okay, let's see if we can do it.
Let's see if we can do our first line three times and then our last line once.
Let's give it a go, nice and slowly to begin with, to begin with.
Here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, let's try it one more time.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, okay, let's try it two times in a row.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, it's tricky when we have to come right back into the beginning after music happen I.
So, we're going to go from the end of that second line, back into the top line.
You need to be absolutely ready.
Let's try it one more time.
Maybe a little bit faster.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, let's try this time.
They going to say the words in our head.
I'm going to whisper it.
You can whisper it too, if you'd like.
Ready, one, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, okay, let's try it one more time.
One, two, three, four, five.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
I make some music.
I make some music.
I want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Good, let's try it a little bit faster for everyone who's absolutely done a really good job at practising this over and over again.
Okay, here we go.
One, two, three, four, five.
Want to make some music.
I want to make some music happen.
Great job.
Pause the video now so that you can practise our body percussion piece with five beats in a bar.
Remember to clap harder on the first beat, the downbeat of every bar.
If you would like to practise together, rewind 20 seconds.
And let's go through each of the steps together.
When you're ready to continue click the play button.
A huge well done on each of the activities today.
And from today's lesson, you now can perform Oliver Twist, which has six beats in a bar.
You can clap to music, which has five beats in a bar, and you can use body percussion for each of the five beats in our music.
Finally, you can perform music with five beats in a bar as well.
Now, if you would like to share any of your work with Oak National, please ask a parent or a carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, and tag @OakNational and #Learnwith Oak.
Again, a huge well done for all of your work.
