Hi everyone, my name is Mr. Palekar and welcome back to music.

This is lesson two of our unit on percussion and in today's lesson, we are going to recap our pencil case percussion piece.

We are going to compose using home percussion and we're going to learn the cup game.

Now for this lesson, you will need some headphones, if you have some.

Don't worry if you don't.

Just make sure you are somewhere where you can concentrate and where you won't be disturbed.

You'll need your pencil case items from last lesson.

I have my pencil case and ruler and so on.

And you will need a plastic cup or beaker.

If you're not sure what this looks like, make sure you ask an adult, a parent or carer.

And finally, you'll need some home items. So for the home items I've got today I've got a bottle of ketchup, I have a bottle of water, and I've got some different spice jars as well.

If you need to pause to get any of those items, pause the video now.

Otherwise, let's drive straight into pencil case percussion.

Now just like last lesson, I have my pencil case, I've got my pen, I've got my ruler, and I've got my mini bottle of hand sanitizer all to use as different types of percussion.

Now remember, percussion is anything that you can hit, scrape, or shake that will produce a sound or make a sound.

For my hand sanitizer bottle, I went like this.

One, two, three, four And so on, and so on, and so on.

Repeat, and repeat, and repeat.

So that was my hand sanitizer bottle.

For my pen, I added something to that.

so I started it with my lid off and I decided actually the sound I wanted to use was close the lid, scrape it, open it up.

Close, scrape, scrape, open.

It sounded like this.

One, two, three, four.

And that idea got repeated over and over and over again.

We also had our zip as well so our zip sounded a little bit like this.

We had one, two.

One, two.

One, two And that idea kept on repeating over and over again.

And finally we had our ruler which went a little bit like this.

One, two, three, shh.

Shh.

And after we'd figured out which instruments were going to do which kinds of sounds.

Where they were going to tap, where they were going to scrape, or where they were going to shake.

We layered them on top of each other.

So we started with one instrument and then added another instrument and added another instrument and added another instrument.

Once you have remembered how you want to use your instruments let's see if we can add it to our piece.

Home percussion.

Now just like our pencil percussion, we're going to be using items from around the home.

Early in this video, I told you that I have a ketchup bottle, I have different spice jars as well which I'm just going to line up as well, and I have got a water bottle as well and I'm going to use a chopstick with that as well for different bits of percussion and I have a, I think that's all, no, I have a cereal box as well.

Cereal box as a shaker.

So, these are all of the items that I want to use for my home percussion kit.

So with each of these items, there's lots of different ways to make different kinds of sounds.

But why not take a look at this guy who is using all areas of his home to make some music.

Take a look.

Now just like the man in the video, we can create lots of different sounds with household objects.

I thought it was very cool so I thought I'd show you that video.

But when we've got items like some ketchup or ketchup bottle, we can use the lid.

For example, we can tap it, we can shake it, or we can scrape it to make different sounds.

So, now I've spent a few minutes figuring out the different sounds I want to make I think with my ketchup bottle and I'm going to open it and close it and use the lid as much as I can.

What else have I got? So, I've got my ketchup bottle, I have my different spices or little bottles as well.

So, I can tap them.

I can scrape them I can tap them together.

I'm going to use a chopstick 'cause I really like this sound of it.

Or I could tap them on the top.

So that's what I'm going to do with my different spice jars.

I've got a bottle with a little bit of water.

I've made sure that my lid is absolutely tight so that there's nothing, that nothing's going to come out.

I can shake it.

I can scratch it and I can tap it.

I can hit it.

Different ways to play that as a percussion instrument.

Or I can use the side and I quite like that so I might use my tap and a side scratch as well.

And finally, I've got my cereal box jar thing and I'm going to use it as a as a bit of a shaker as well.

Now, I've made sure that my lid is absolutely on tight so that my breakfast doesn't go anywhere and I'm going to make sure that I can use that as a shaker as well.

Okay, let's see what we can do with these different instruments together.

Okay, so, I've got my ketchup bottle.

And I've decided I'm going to open it, close it.

Open it, close it.

And that's going to be quite a simple pattern that can go over and over again.

That means that I can start to layer the different instrument sounds on top of it.

So, I want to start simple and then get more and more and more complex.

Okay, so, with my ketchup bottle, I'm going to go one, two, three, four.

So I've got a little arrow up for me opening it and then an arrow down for me to hit it shut.

If you've got a bottle that you can do this with now try it with me.

One, two, three, here we go.

Open, shut.

One, two, three, four.

Great.

Okay, so we've got our ketchup bottle sound.

We have our jars so, put my jars over here and I'm going to use my chopstick, my very special chopstick which you can use a pencil, if you want to use a pencil instead.

And, what have I got? So I've got a little zigzag.

I'm going to use that as a way to go across.

And all I'm going is going across the front or the back of them.

And then I've got a dot and that dot is going to be a tap.

And then I've got another swipe and then I've got two taps.

So it might sound like this.

One, two, three, four.

If you've got something that you can do this like a few jars and a chopstick or a pencil try it with me now.

One, two, three, here we go.

Very nice.

Okay, so I've got my sounds for my spice jars.

Okay, and I've got cereal.

Remember I said it's going to be a shaker.

But on which beats, on which numbers, are we going to shake it on? Okay, so we're going to have a shake on one two.

One, two.

And then we've got a three and a four with it is that dot which means I'm going to tap the top.

One, two, three, four.

One, two, three four.

Cool, okay so I've got my shaker.

And finally I have my bottle and with this bottle I'm going to do a certain pattern, which is going to go like this.

One, two, three, four.

Let's hear it again.

Ready, here we go.

Remember, I really like that side so that's the one that I'm going to use.

And remember, if you don't have a bottle, if you've got something else, then use that and you can find a sound or a way of either hitting it, shaking it, or scraping against it that will make a sound that you want to use.

So how would that sound if we put it together? Well, let's have a bit of a jam.

Let's have a bit of a play around.

Maybe you can use an instrument in a rhythm that you like to play along with me.

If you would like to use a rhythm that's on the screen with an item that you have from home, you can do that too.

Okay, so we are going to be starting with our ketchup bottle.

You can be using a different instrument, that's absolutely fine and after I start for a little while and then another instrument is going to join in and another instrument and we're going to be layering, that word layering, like a cake, our different sound ideas, our different patterns of sound, our different rhythms on top of each other.

For this game, you will need to make sure that you have your cup or your beaker ready.

Please make sure it is made out of something like plastic or cardboard, something that's not going to break.

And if you're not sure, please ask a parent or carer first to help you find one.

You need your cup or your beaker in front of you.

We also need to make sure we know our right and left.

I'm going to mirror you, so if on this hand, which is on this side of the screen.

This one is going to be your right hand.

This one is going to be your left hand.

Let's just double check that.

We are passing the cup between our right hand and our left hand.

It takes practise to get to that speed but you must, must, must, must, must practise slowly and get every single step correct and then slowly speed up.

As soon as you make a mistake, start slowing it back down again and practise slowly before you can reach that speed.
