Hello, and welcome to another music lesson with me, Miss Miner.
This is our final lesson of the unit non-Western rhythmic cycles, and I am excited to take you on our journey through the final lesson of samba.
What will we cover in this lesson? We will start off with a warmup using call and response.
We will then learn simple Samba signals.
Following that, we will recap our Samba Groove.
And finally, we will structure a performance.
In this lesson you will need just your bodies.
However, do make sure you're in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed and that you've turned off any notifications on any apps or conversations you have running.
When you're ready, we'll carry on.
We are going to warm up with some Call and Response patterns in this lesson.
So the first call and response pattern goes like this.
♪ Play the Samba with me, oh yeah ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me, oh yeah ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me, oh yeah ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me, oh yeah ♪ Let's see if we can have a go at me saying the call and you saying the response, oh yeah.
♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ Did you catch it? Good stuff.
This time, I would like you to respond to ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ and I would like you to do, oh yeah, on your chest.
Let's try it.
♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ Super! We're going to use that section or that pattern of Call and Response after you hear the apito or the whistle at the beginning.
So you will hear.
♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Oh yeah ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Oh yeah ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Oh yeah ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Oh yeah ♪ So you'll hear four blows on the whistle, followed by four times round our Call and Response pattern.
Let's try it.
Well done.
In our performance, at the end of this lesson, there is going to be another call and response break.
And it goes like this.
♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Gimme the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ In Brazil ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Gimme the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ In Brazil ♪ Let's try it.
I'd like you to always be the response.
♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ Super! This time we're going to learn a body percussion pattern to go alongside that.
So it will go like this.
♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Gimme the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ In Brazil ♪ I 'll do it one more time.
♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Gimme the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ In Brazil ♪ This time, I will do the call, ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ and you need to reply with, ♪ Gimme the Samba ♪ and then I will play, ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ and you will do, ♪ In Brazil ♪ Are you ready? Off I go.
♪ where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ Super! Now you've got the hang of that, we are going to try this at different tempos.
Now, when I'm talking about tempo, I'm talking about speed.
So what you need to do as the response is you need to listen to the speed or the tempo of the call and respond in the same tempo or in the same way.
Let's have a go.
♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ ♪ Where's the Samba ♪ Super! What did you notice happening to the tempo when we did that, did it get faster? Did it get slower? You're absolutely right, it got faster.
Or what we'd say in music is there was an, accelerando which literally means accelerate.
We accelerated, we got faster.
Well done.
Pause the video to practise the call and response patterns with a member of your household.
When you've done that, press play and we'll carry on.
What is call and response? Is it rhythm patterns where stress notes are placed off the beat? Is it a musical conversation where one phrase, the call, is answered by another? Is it the heartbeat of the music? Or is it a repeated pattern or phrase? Point to the answer you think is correct.
Well done, it's a musical conversation where one phrase, the call, is answered by another.
Listen to this music of Samba Batucada one more time.
That's a style of Samba.
Listen out for how does the leader start and stop the music.
Can you hear when the groove starts? Can you hear any call and response sections? Enjoy.
So now we are going to revise all of the elements of our samba performance so that we are ready to put it together at the end of the lesson.
So let's go back and just remind ourself of that signal plus the call to response four times that we do after that.
So you will hear on the apito.
Then the call, ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ ♪ Play the Samba with me ♪ Are you ready? Let's try it Well done.
At the end of the performance, we will also require a signal to stop just like we did in the West African drumming performance.
So using the apito or the whistle again, you will hear four counts on the apito, but you will also see this.
And we will all stop after that, those four beats.
I'll show you one more time.
Super, I hope you can remember that.
Pause the video to remind yourself of the calls and responses and the start and stop signals.
Perhaps you could do this with a member of your family.
When you've done that, and you're happy that you'll remember them, press play and we'll carry on.
Now it's time to remind ourselves of that game, "Switch", we played in the last lesson with our Samba groove.
You will now have chance to watch back at all four of the rhythms that make up our groove or ostinato and then we will play the game "Switch".
The first layer would be that usually played on the surdo, the biggest drum.
And it goes like this.
♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ Can you try it? ♪ Ready, steady, off we go ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ Well done.
The second rhythm in our samba groove is one that you should already know.
And it goes like this.
♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ Join me this time, off we go.
♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ The third ostinato goes like this.
♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ Are you ready to have a go? ♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ Well done.
And the fourth rhythm in our ostinato goes like this.
♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ Have a go.
♪ Ready, steady, off we go ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ Well done.
So we are now going to play a game of "Switch" to get these patterns really stuck in your head.
This is the way the game works.
You are going to start by playing and singing ostinato one.
When you hear the word, switch, you are going to move to ostinato two.
When you hear the word switch again, you will move to ostinato three and so on.
When you're on ostinato four and you hear the word, switch, you need to go back to ostinato one.
Hopefully that makes sense.
Hopefully your brains are in gear and let's get going.
♪ Ready, steady, off we go ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three four ♪ Switch! ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ Switch! ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ Switch! ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin', we are a movin' ♪ ♪ Groovin, groovin' ♪ ♪ We are a movin' ♪ Switch! ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ Switch! ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ Switch! ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ Every body does the Samba ♪ Switch! ♪ Groovin, groovin' ♪ ♪ we are a movin' ♪ Switch! ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ Ready and stop.
So now it's time to see what our groove sounds like altogether.
You can choose which part you'd like to join in with, but each part is going to join the groove one by one.
♪ Ready, steady off we go ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ One, two, three four ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ One, two, three, four ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ ♪ Everybody dance the samba ♪ ♪ I can play clave ♪ So here's a vocabulary recap for you.
You have just performed a polyrhythm, when two or more rhythms are performed at the same time.
Pause the video to practise these rhythms. When you're ready, press play.
So what is a polyrhythm? Is it rhythm patterns where stress notes are placed off the beat? Is it the heartbeat of the music? Is it when two or more rhythms are performed at the same time? Or is it a repeated pattern or phrase? Point to the answer you think is correct.
Well done.
It's when two or more rhythms are performed at the same time.
As we just practised with our Samba groove.
We are now ready to structure our samba performance.
As you can see on the screen, there are a series of blocks and shapes that represent the order that we will perform in.
We will start off with our signal.
Don't forget that one, two, three, four, played on their apito.
Following that, the four times round we will do our, play the Samba with me, call and response pattern.
Following that we go into our groove where we play one of our four rhythms over and over again for eight times.
Following that we go back to our play the samba with me, call and response.
Following that you can see a blue speech bubble.
And this is where we do our second call and response break.
Where's the samba, gimme the samba where's the samba, in Brazil.
We do that four times round.
Following that we go back into our groove for eight times, and then we finally will hear our signal to stop, four sounds on the apito and we all finish together.
I would like you first to watch the performance and see if you can follow the structure.
When you've watched it once, you will hear it for a second time where you can join in.
