Hello, and welcome to the final lesson of this unit.

My name is Miss Miner, and I'm very excited to be finishing this journey with you all about harmony.

I'm hoping in this lesson, you will be able to apply everything you've learned over the last six lessons to culminate in a great performance.

So let's go! What will we cover in this lesson? We'll start off with a new warmup.

Following that we're going to learn a song called "Ain't Going to Let Nobody", it's a fantastic spiritual.

Following that, we're going to analyse the use of harmony in Pachelbel's Canon, and finally, your challenge is to structure the "Ain't Going to Let Nobody" song for a performance.

In this lesson you will need just your bodies, but of course your voice as well.

Please do try and make sure you are clear of distractions and you've turned off any notifications you have running on any apps or conversations.

When you've done that, try to find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed during the lesson and where you have the space to move and the space to sing.

when you're ready, let's go.

So we are going to warm up with a new song today called "Wo-oh!" by Charles Beal, and it's a huge hit on Sing Up.

You're going to learn two of the four parts that make up this song.

So let's start learning those parts.

The first part, which I've adapted a little bit goes like this.

Let's look at the first part of that rhythm.

Have a go! My turn! Your turn! And then we need to add on the end, try that.

Your turn! Super, if we put it all together it sounds like this! Ready, steady, your turn, go! My turn, off I go! Your turn, tap your chest! Let's see if we can do that rhythm, that's that pattern four times together.

Ready, one, two, off we go.

Well done, that's part one.

The second part goes like this.

How did that melody work? How did it work? Did you notice anything about the melody in particular and the way it moved? That's right, it came in steps down from the top, and then we had a long note at the end.

Let's try it together, I think you can do it.

Ready, off we go, now! Again! Again! Last time! You've got it! Now, I would like you to choose one of those parts, either or to sing with this track, and there will be other harmony parts singing with you, but you need to choose either the first part or the second part.

So what is harmony? Is it when only one part can be heard at a time? Is it only when a pop artist has backing singers? Is it the combining of notes simultaneously to produce chords, or is it the name of a Disney princess? Point to the answer you think is correct.

That's right, it's the combining of notes simultaneously to produce chords.

So now we're going to learn a new song called "Ain't Going to Let Nobody", and this song is all about power, freedom, and promoting equal rights.

I love this song.

So it has three parts, two melodies and a bassline as well.

We're going to learn the main tune first and it goes like this.

So what was the meaning behind the song "Ain't Going to Let Nobody"? Is it singing in protest for power, freedom, and equal rights for all or is it to demand that nobody makes anyone do their homework? Point to the answer you think is correct.

That's right, it's singing in protest for power, freedom and equal rights for all.

You are now going to hear an extract from a piece of music called "Canon in D" by Johann Pachelbel.

Pachelbel is a German Baroque composer.

This is a really old piece of music, and it's suggested that it dates back from 1680-ish, but nobody is exactly sure.

You should be able to hear that even that many years ago, composers were really thinking about harmony and using it to create interest in their music.

You should be able to hear each of the parts come in one by one and as another part comes in, it creates more harmonic interest.

It creates more interesting, richer harmonies.

Enjoy! So who wrote the canon you've just heard? Was it Pachelbel, was it Beethoven, or was it Brahms? That's right, it was written by Pachelbel, although all three composers here are German composers, although they are all from different eras.

Now the recording you just heard was performed by me on all four flutes; however, it was originally written for strings.

Here comes the challenge: how should we structure "Ain't Going to Let Nobody" to show harmonic development? We heard that in "Pachelbel's Canon", each part was introduced one by one to create a developing harmony.

How would you structure your performance? Could you create a performance at home using a free app or software where you can layer your voice over the top? I've used the building blocks of this song to have a go, so I may start out with melody one and then add in melody two so the two melodies are being heard together, and then finally add the bassline.

If you wanted it to be a little bit more like "Pachelbel's Canon", you might decide to start with the bassline and then add the melodies one by one, it's up to you.
