Hi everyone, I'm Miss Harris and welcome to today's RE lesson.

Where we are going to be learning about the Christmas story.

Now you might be thinking, "Miss Harris I don't know what RE means." R-E, R the letter E stands for Religious Education.

And in this unit of work, we are going to be learning all about the Christmas story.

Now, Christmas is a Christian celebration.

We're going to be learning all about that in the next few lessons.

Let's take a look at what we're going to be doing today.

So we all going to be looking at what is Christmas? Who celebrates Christmas? When is Christmas? And then we're going to be listening to the story of Jesus's birth.

And at the end there's going to be a special quiz where you can show off everything that you've learned in this lesson.

You will need an exercise book or a piece of paper, a pencil, a coloured pencils so you can tick or fix your work and you will need a Teddy bear because your Teddy bear is going to be sitting with you while you're listening to the story.

If you don't have any of those things, now is the time to pause the video and go and get them now.

Okay, now here we have got some star words.

The star words are the important words we're going to be using a lot in this lesson.

So we're going to practise saying them.

So I'd like you to tell yours screen, you're going to say it out loud, do you think you can do that? Great, are you ready? So it's my turn, then your turn.

Nativity, did you say it? Are you sure, let's do it one more time.

Nativity, good.

Jesus, Bethlehem, Joseph, Mary, manger, Christian.

Great job well done.

Now, what is Christmas? Can you take 10 seconds to have a think, What is Christmas? Do you know what it is? Do you know what happens at Christmas or what you do? That's something.

Have you thought about it? Christmas is a Christian celebration and it happens every year on the same day.

Look but not all Christians can celebrate Christmas because non-Christians, people who are not Christian also celebrate Christmas.

What type of celebration is Christmas, can you remember? It's a Christian celebration, well done.

Now here we have got a calendar.

Christmas is a Christian celebration of love and we celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December every year.

Can you point to the 25th of December on my calendar? So use your finger.

Can you find the box that has 25 in it? The 25th of December.

Now do you think you might be able to tell me what day Christmas is going to be on this year? Can you find it? So the way that we read a calendar is we read along the corridor and up this stairs.

What day does it say at the top when we read along the corridor and up the stairs? Friday, well done.

So let's recap.

Christmas is a, what type of celebration? A Christian celebration well done.

What day is Christmas on this year? A Friday, good.

And what date? The 25th of, what month? December good job.

Now, I'm going to tell you the Christmas story.

So you're going to need to sit nice and comfortably.

Get your Teddy, give it a nice big cuddle and make sure that you're sitting with your ears open and you're listening.

Are you ready? Are you sure? Are you sure that you ready? 100 for sure? Great, 2,000 years ago in a town called Nazareth, there lived a young woman named Mary.

She was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter.

The angel Gabriel visited Mary and told her that she was going to have a baby, called Jesus.

The baby would be God's son, whose son? Who was having a baby? What was her name? Mary, well done.

Mary told Joseph what the angel Gabriel had told her and they prepared for the arrival of a special baby.

They got married and had to travel to Bethlehem to pay taxes.

This was where Joseph was from, from Bethlehem.

Mary rode on a donkey over the Hills of Galilee.

At last Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem.

It was crowded with people everywhere who also needed to pay their taxes.

But Mary wasn't very tired, she'd been carrying that baby in her tummy that makes people very tired.

And Mary was tired and need a place to stay.

At each inn, the story was the same.

They said, "There's no room at the inn." What did they say? There's no room at the inn.

Eventually a kind innkeeper in Bethlehem, let Mary and Joseph stay in his stable for the night.

And so a few hours later baby Jesus was born in the stable where the animals were kept.

She wrapped Jesus in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger full of hay.

At the same time on a hillside overlooking Bethlehem, some shepherds were watching over their sheep.

A bright light appeared in the sky.

They were very afraid, but it was an angel sent by God.

The angel told them that the son of God had been born and they could find him in Bethlehem.

The shepherds walked to Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus.

The shepherds wanted to go and see the baby, and when they arrived at the stable, they were filled with joy, seeing Jesus laying in the manger.

They now knelt down and worship him.

They told Mary and Joseph how the angel had appeared in the sky and told them that Jesus would be the saviour of the world.

Far away in the East three wise men saw a bright new star, look shining in the sky.

They knew it meant a new King had been born.

They followed the star.

What did they do? They followed the star, you're right.

How many wise men? How many were they? Three good job.

The three wise men went to Jerusalem to see King Herod as they thought the baby would be in a palace.

The King was troubled he thought this new King may take away his throne and told them to return when they had found the baby so he could worship the child himself.

That doesn't seem quite right, is it? The three wise men followed the star to the stable in Bethlehem.

They gave Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

That night all the wise men had the same dream.

Where an angel warns them that King Herod wanted to kill Jesus and told them not to go back to his palace.

The wise men went back to that own country without seeing King Herod.

And soon after Joseph had a dream where an angel told him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt, as they would be safe from King Herod, who had ordered that Jesus be killed.

So he told everyone that Jesus must be killed, if they found him.

King Herod began to search for baby Jesus.

He ordered that all baby boys in Bethlehem be killed.

That's just so that he knows that whichever what baby was Jesus, that they would all be dead because they were all boys.

Mary and Joseph travelled to Egypt with baby Jesus and he was safe.

So King Herod couldn't get to him when he was in Egypt.

Guess what I really love this story.

That was the Christmas story.

Now we are going to map this story.

That means we're going to draw some pictures to represent each part of the story.

Your paint is going to look like this, it's going to be a table.

We're going to have a go at drawing this into our books now.

Fast we need to make 12 boxes on our piece of paper.

So what we're going to do is we're going to turn it horizontally.

And then we are going to fold it in half and make a crease.

That way we will have a fold down the middle.

Then we are going to fold it again, we're going to fold these sides inwards, are you ready? One side.

Into the middle.

Like so then we're going to open it up, we should have four columns.

We're then going to turn it again and fold inwards so that we have got three columns now.

So make them roughly the same size, one.

Good so now we have got 12 boxes.

Now we are going to map the story, doing three boxes at a time.

So first I want you to watch me map the story while I retell it and then you are going to do the first three, okay.

So just sit and watch for now.

So first, we're going to label box number one, number two, and finally, number three.

So let's start by drawing box number one.

2,000 years ago in a town called Nazareth, there lived a young woman named Mary.

So I'm going to write, 2,000 years ago.

And then I'm going to draw a little flag and that says Nazareth on it, so we know where we're talking about, Nazareth and there was a young woman named Mary.

So there is Mary.

She was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter.

So I'm going to draw some things to Joseph.

Let's give him a flat hat.

So Miss Harris is not the best at drawing, you're probably going to realise that during this.

So she was married to a carpenter, she was engaged to be married sorry.

The angel Gabriel visited Mary and told her she was going to have a baby called Jesus.

The baby would be the son of God.

So I'm going to draw a little stick angel some wings.

So this doesn't need to be a piece of art.

So she was going to have a son called Jesus, I'm going to draw a little speech for, son of God and then he will be called Jesus.

That's box number one.

So still watching, I'm going to do box two and box three.

Number two, Mary told Joseph what the the angel Gabriel had told her and they prepared for the arrival of the special baby.

They got married, and had to travel to Bethlehem to pay taxes.

This was where Joseph was from.

Mary rode on a donkey over the Hills of Galilee.

So I'm going to draw a picture, I'm going to write the word Bethlehem and an arrow to show where they were going.

Again, Miss Harris is not the best at drawing.

So I'm going to draw a stick donkey.

You can probably draw a better donkey than I can, that is the donkey's tail.

Mary, sitting on the donkey and Joseph walking among side them holding the donkey.

And they went over the Hills of Galilee.

Good, number three, at last Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem.

It was crowded with other people who needed to pay their taxes.

Mary was very tired and needed a place to stay at each inn the story was the same, they said, "There's no room at the inn." Eventually a kind innkeeper in Bethlehem let Mary and Joseph stay in their stable for the night.

So they were in Bethlehem, they had made it, but in the first inn there was no space.

I might change the colour and do that in red, there was no space.

Then in the next inn that was, I'm going to change colour again, there was no space.

Until they met the kind innkeeper who said, "You can stay in the stables." So they can stay in the staples.

Okay what you are going to do now is you're going to pause the video and you are going to map one, two and three.

Pause the video and have a go at that now.

Great, so now we're going to do boxes four, five and six.

You're going to watch me first and then you're going to have a go.

And so it was a few hours later, baby Jesus was born in the stables, where the animals were kept.

Mary wrapped Jesus in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger full of hay.

So Miss Harris is going to have a go at drawing a manger this kind of manger that has got legs like this.

Baby Jesus was wrapped in cloth, draw a little baby Jesus.

And there were animals, there's lots of hay as well all around him.

I'm sure you can do a better job than me at drawing.

And there were lots of animals as well around.

So let's draw a couple of other animals around the outside.

Number five, at the same time on a hillside overlooking Bethlehem, some shepherds were watching their sheep.

So let's draw some hills.

And we are going to write shepherds and they were three, one, two, three.

Who were watching over their sheep which are on the hills, we draw one more.

There was a bright light in the sky and they were very afraid.

It was an angel sent by God.

So let's draw a picture of the angel again with some wings.

The angel told them that the son of God had been born and they could find him in Bethlehem.

The shepherds walk to Bethlehem to visit baby Jesus.

So the angel said go to Bethlehem, okay.

Number six, the shepherds wanted to go and see the baby.

And when they arrived at the stable, they were filled with joy seeing Jesus laying in the manger.

They knelt down and worshipped him.

They told Mary and Joseph how the angel had appeared in the sky and told them that Jesus would be the saviour of the world.

So let's draw the roof of the stable.

Stable and then Jesus in the manger again.

And let's draw the shepherds who were worshipping him, and they were really happy.

Again I said, Miss Harris, not the best at drawing.

There we go, okay now it's your turn.

Pause the video and have a go at drawing boxes, four, five and six.

Now we're going to do boxes seven, eight and nine.

Well done you're trying so hard I know there's a lot to draw in this story map, but you're doing a really great job.

Now, far away in the East three wise men saw a bright new star shining high in the sky.

So I'm going to draw a star and it was shining high in the sky.

And there were three wise men, let's draw three men.

Three wise men.

The three wise men, they followed the star.

They knew it meant a King had been born.

So they followed the star because they knew it meant that somewhere King had been born.

The three wise men went to Jerusalem, went to Jerusalem to see King Herod.

as they thought the baby would be in the palace.

The King was troubled, he thought there's new King may take away his throne.

He told them to return when they had found the baby so that he could worship him himself.

So we draw a picture of the King looking not particularly happy we draw a crown so we know it's King Herod.

And then we've got the three wise men who were there to see Jesus.

But he's not there, I put a question mark, because he's not there, they thought he would be there.

The three wise men followed the star to a stable in Bethlehem.

So now they're back in Bethlehem, they followed the star, which was shining in the sky and they gave them three gifts.

The first was gold, the second was something called frankincense, ops it's got to fit it on the end of my page, frankincense.

And the last one was called myrrh Okay, now it's your turn to draw boxes seven, eight and nine.

Pause the video have we go at that now.

Okay so now we've got the last boxes box 10, 11 and box 12.

Now books 10, the wise men went back to their own country without seeing King Herod.

And soon after Joseph had a dream when angel told him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt as King Herod had ordered that Jesus be killed.

So let's draw a picture of Joseph, who's asleep.

Asleep on the floor, and he had a dream that Jesus was ordered to be killed and that he would need to go to Egypt to be safe.

Herod began to search for baby Jesus.

He ordered that all baby boys in Bethlehem be killed.

So then we got to draw a picture of King Herod he wanted all the baby boys to be killed to make sure that Jesus was killed.

Because Jesus was thought to be a boy, baby Jesus.

And he wanted all baby boys on too.

Number 12, Mary and Joseph travelled to Egypt with baby Jesus.

And he was safe So in Egypt there is lots of pyramids, so I'm going to draw some so we know where he went Egypt.

And we're going to draw a little picture of baby Jesus still wrapped in a cloth 'cause we know that's what baby Jesus looks like.

And I'm sorry with this drawings.

Okay now it's your turn can you draw boxes 10, 11, and 12 then you have finished your story map.

Well done you have worked incredibly hard today.
