Hello, my name's Miss Rivers, and I'm looking forward to learning with you today.
I'm glad you chose this lesson.
We're going to have a good time working together.
So let's get started.
Welcome to today's lesson.
The lesson is from the unit caring.
How do stories inspire actions? This lesson is called the Good Samaritan: Christian Caring Today.
By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to describe how Christians might care for their neighbours today by offering to help those in need.
And today we'll be learning how this story inspires Christians to show care and kindness to others.
Some of today's learning will be new for everyone, so we'll need to work really hard, but I'm here to help and we can all learn together.
The keywords we'll be using today are food bank.
That means a place where people can get free or cheap food for themselves.
Christian, someone who follows the teachings, and example of Jesus.
And homeless, someone who hasn't got a home.
Some of these words might be new for you, so let's practise them together.
I'll say the word and then you say it back to me, food bank.
Christian.
Homeless.
Don't forget to listen out for those keywords.
We'll be using them all through the lesson.
In the first part of the lesson, we'll be learning about how Christians follow Jesus' teachings.
How might Christians follow the teachings of Jesus? People who follow the teaching, and example of Jesus are called Christians.
Can you see the church in the picture? Some Christians might go to church to meet and learn from other Christians.
They might pray and sing together.
They might read the Bible and listen to someone talking about what it means.
Some Christians might read the Bible to learn about the teaching and example of Jesus.
They might read some of Jesus' stories and parables in the Bible.
They might read the story of the Good Samaritan or other stories about Jesus.
They read the Bible to learn about God and to help them decide how to live their lives.
Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan to remind his listeners that they should love their neighbours.
The story ended with a surprise.
The Samaritan helped the Jewish man even though the Jews and the Samaritans were not friends.
Here is the good Samaritan carrying the injured man on his donkey and taking him to be cared for.
Many Christians learn an important lesson from the parable of the Good Samaritan.
They believe that loving their neighbour means they should care for everyone.
They should care for people they know.
They should show care for people they don't know.
They should even be kind to people they don't like.
So let's do a quick check.
This is true or false? So get your thumbs ready to show me true or false.
Most Christians try to follow the teachings of Jesus.
Is that true or false? Have a think.
Yes, that's right.
It's true, most Christians try to follow the teachings and commandments of Jesus.
Christians might help others by volunteering at the church or in the community.
These Christians are helping at the food bank at the church.
Can you see them in the picture? Can you remember what a food bank is? That's one of our keywords for today.
A food bank is somewhere that people can get free or cheap food if they need it, and these Christians are sorting out the food and packing the bags so that people who need food can come and collect some.
Here's David.
David is a Christian.
He's heard the parable of the Good Samaritan lots of times.
He likes to think about what it means to him.
The parable reminds him to look out for people who need care and kindness in his everyday life at work and at home.
He says, "It's important to him to follow Jesus' command to love our neighbours." That means being kind to everyone he meets, whether he knows them or not.
So here's another quick check to see what we've learned and this is another true or false, so get your thumbs ready to show me true or false.
Most Christians only care for other Christians.
Is that true or false? Have a think.
Yes, that's right.
It's false.
Most Christians try to show kindness to everyone, whatever their religion or belief.
Well done if you got that answer right.
Okay, now it's your turn to do some thinking and writing.
Can you see the picture of the Good Samaritan? What's happening in the picture? Pause the video and have a think about it.
Did you remember this part of the story where the Samaritan helped the injured man after the religious leaders had walked straight past and not helped? Your first task is to write a caption for the picture to say what's happening.
Then after that, you need to write another sentence to explain what a Christian might learn from the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Think about what David said about caring for others, even people you don't know.
Pause the video while you do your writing and I will look forward to seeing what you have written later on.
Well done.
You've worked really hard with your writing.
I wonder what ideas you came up with.
Here are my ideas.
Here's the caption for the picture that I've written.
It says, the Good Samaritan is showing care by taking the injured man somewhere safe.
And then I've written a Christian might follow the example of the Good Samaritan by being kind to someone they don't know.
I wonder if your ideas were the same as mine, or did you think of some different things to write? Well done for working so hard.
In the second part of the lesson, we're going to learn about how Christians follow the example of the Good Samaritan by showing care for others.
How might Christians show care today? David is talking about the parable of the Good Samaritan and what it means to him.
Even though he's heard this story lots of times, he thinks there is always something new to learn from it.
He says, "The parable of the Good Samaritan reminds me that it's not always easy to be kind and helpful to people we don't know.
We might walk past and not notice that people are suffering.
Everyone gets it wrong sometimes." David volunteers at the homeless hostel next to his church.
The story of the Good Samaritan reminds him why he's chosen to help out there and why homeless people are important to him.
In the story, the injured man was left by the roadside and the religious leaders walked past.
Then the Samaritan came to help.
David says, "People sometimes overlook homeless people, but Jesus often noticed people who were overlooked.
I want to follow Jesus's example by noticing and caring for homeless people in my community." David's thinking about not walking past, but stopping to help just like the Samaritan did.
Here's a picture of a bedroom at a homeless hostel.
Do you know what happens at a homeless hostel? Homeless shelters help people without a home.
Sometimes people might need a bed for the night, just like this bedroom here that you can see in the picture.
They might need a shower or they might need some medical help.
The homeless hostel or the shelter is a good place to go and get that help.
Next to the homeless shelter, there is a cafe in the church.
Sometimes people just need a cup of tea and a friendly chat with someone to talk to.
Can you see the people in the picture having a chat and sharing a cup of tea together? Sometimes the people at the homeless hostel are lonely and it's good for them to be able to meet others in the cafe, everyone is welcome.
People from the homeless shelter, people from the community, people from the church.
The cafe is for everyone to meet together.
It's not just for Christians.
Do you remember that David was thinking about the parable of the Good Samaritan and what it means to him? He says that he helps at the homeless shelter because he wants to follow Jesus's teaching by caring for people who need his help.
Sometimes it's hard to be kind to people you don't know, but this is what the story of the Good Samaritan teaches David.
It reminds him that the Samaritan helped the injured man, even though the injured man was not his friend.
David thinks that the parable teaches him about being kind to people who doesn't know just like the Good Samaritan in the parable.
So here's a quick check to see if you've been listening really carefully during our lesson today.
I wonder if you can complete this sentence.
Christians might follow Jesus's teaching by is it A, caring for other Christians? B, caring for anyone who needs help? Or C, caring for people they know? Have a think.
Pause the video and decide your answer.
That's right.
The correct answer is B.
Christians might follow Jesus's teaching by caring for anyone who needs help.
Well done if you chose the right answer.
Now it's your turn to do a little bit more thinking and writing.
Here's David again.
One of David's friends from church is thinking about volunteering to help at the homeless shelter and wondering if he might want to help just like David does.
What could David say to his friend to help them to decide? Think about why Christians might think it's important to help homeless people.
Think of some of the reasons that David gave for why he helps at the homeless shelter.
Think about the story of the Good Samaritan and what Christians might learn from that.
Can you think of three ideas that David could say to his friend to help them to decide whether to help at the homeless shelter or not? I wonder if you can use some of today's key words in your writing.
See if you can.
So write your ideas in the speech bubble.
Pause the video while you are doing your writing, and I will look forward to seeing you again when you finished your work.
You've worked hard today.
Did you think of some good ideas for David? Did you think of some things that he could say to his friend to them to decide whether to help at the homeless shelter or not? Here are my ideas.
David could say Jesus taught that it's important to be kind to people even if you don't know them.
He might say, Christians follow Jesus's example by noticing people at the homeless shelter who are sometimes overlooked.
He might say, Christians at the homeless shelter work together to care for those who need extra help.
I wonder if some of your ideas were the same as mine or maybe you thought of some different ones.
Did you spot where I'd included some of today's keywords? I wonder if you managed to include some keywords as well.
Well done for all of your hard work today.
So we have learned a lot today about the Good Samaritan and Christian caring today.
We've learned that many Christians try to follow the teaching and example of Jesus.
We've learned how Christians, like David, try to put the message of the Good Samaritan into practise by caring for their neighbours.
This means that they care for people of all religions and people with no religion.
Many Christians like David show care today in all sorts of ways.
For example, by supporting food banks and by helping the homeless.
You've worked hard today and I've enjoyed working with you.
Thank you for choosing this lesson and see again soon.
