Hello, I'm Ms. Rivers.
I'm glad you've chosen this lesson.
I'm looking forward to working with you today, so I'll be helping you with your learning in this lesson.
Welcome to today's lesson.
The lesson is from the unit caring.
How do stories inspire actions? This lesson is called the Hungry Stranger, Muslim Caring Today.
By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to show how Muslims might care for people in need today.
Today's learning is about how Muslims show care to the people in their community.
Some of today's learning will be new for everyone, so we'll need to work really hard, but I'm here to help and we can all learn together.
The key words we're using today are poor.
That means having very little money or few possessions, community, that means the people living in the same area or sharing the same interest and charity, that means acts of kindness or generosity to people in need.
Some of these words might be new to you, so let's practise saying them together.
I'll say the word, then you say it back to me.
Poor, community, charity.
We'll be using these words all through the lesson, so make sure you listen really carefully and see how many times you can spot them.
In the first part of the lesson, we'll be learning all about the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
How do Muslims follow Prophet Muhammad's teaching? Here is Nadia.
Nadia is a Muslim.
She has a Muslim worldview and she follows the teaching and example of the Prophet Muhammad.
It's important to her to follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
She believes she should care for the poor and the story of The Hungry Stranger reminds Nadia that she should help poor people in her local community and all around the world, just like the family in The story of The Hungry Stranger.
This picture shows the end of the story of the Prophet Muhammad and the stranger.
I wonder if you know this story.
This story is all about a family who shared their food with somebody who needed it, even though they didn't have very much to share.
And in this picture, the man and his wife are eating in the dark so that the hungry stranger can't see their empty plates.
So here's a quick check to see what we've learned so far.
And this is a true or false question, so you need to get your thumbs ready to show me thumbs up for true and thumbs down for false.
Christians follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
Is that true or false? Have a think.
That's right, it's false.
Muslims follow the teachings and example of the Prophet Muhammad.
Well done if you got that right.
Here's Nadia again.
Nadia is telling us that Muslims follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad to care for the poor.
Did you spot that key word? Poor.
The poor means people who don't have much money.
Nadia says it's important for her to care for the poor in her community.
Her community is the place where she lives.
Did you spot another key word there? Community, that means people who live in the same place.
People in her community might donate food to the food bank at the mosque or give some money to charity.
Can you remember the name of the Muslim Holy Book? Yes, that's right.
It's the Quran.
Can you see the Quran in the picture? It's on a stand to show that it's a really special book for Muslims and these two Muslim ladies are reading the Quran together.
The Quran has lots of teaching about caring for people in need.
The Quran says God loves those who give in good times and in bad.
I wonder what this means to Muslims. Have a think about it And maybe talk to somebody near you.
Pause the video while you think, I wonder what you thought about.
This means that you are feeling, if you are feeling good or not, or if you have lots of money or only a little, it's important to give to others.
I wonder how a Muslim might follow this instruction.
Maybe they might give some food to the food bank or maybe give some money to people who need it.
I wonder what ideas you came up with.
So here are some ways that Muslims might give and share with people who need it.
They might help the poor by giving some money to charity.
Some Muslims give money to charity even if they don't have very much to give, a bit like the family in the story of The Hungry Stranger.
That's what's meant By giving in good times and in bad.
Some Muslims might give food to the food bank.
Can you remember what a food bank is? Yes, that's right.
It's a place where people in need can go to get some food for their family.
And here's a box of food ready to be given to someone who needs it.
Some Muslims follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad by giving time as well as money.
They might care for the poor in their local community, maybe by helping at the food bank, they might volunteer.
That means that they Help without getting paid.
In the story of The Hungry Stranger, The kind man and his wife followed the teachings of the Quran to give in good times and bad.
They were having a bad time.
They didn't have very much food to share at all.
Can you see them looking at that small dish of rice and wondering what to do.
But they decided that they would share that very small amount of food with the stranger who needed it because they wanted to follow the teachings of the prophet Muhammad.
So let's see what you've remembered.
Here's a question.
Why do Muslims give to charity? I wonder if you can find two correct answers.
Here are the choices.
A, the Quran teaches that Muslims should give.
B, Prophet Muhammad taught that Muslims should care for the poor by giving to charity or C, Muslims have to donate food to the food bank.
Pause the video while you think about your answer.
That's right.
It is the first two answers that were correct.
The Quran teaches that Muslims should give and the prophet Muhammad taught that Muslims should care for the poor by giving to charity.
Muslims might donate food to the food bank, but they don't have to.
They might give in some other way.
Well done if you managed to spot two right answers there.
Okay, now it's your turn to do some work.
So this picture shows part of the story of the Prophet Muhammad and the Hungry Stranger.
Have a look at the picture.
I wonder what the man and his wife are saying to each other.
I wonder what they are thinking as they look at their small dish of rice.
Your task is to write a caption for the picture to say what's happening.
And then when you've done that, write a sentence to explain what a Muslim might learn from this story.
Think about all that we've learned in the lesson so far about how Muslims care for others.
Pause the video while you do your writing.
You've worked really hard today.
Have you done some good thinking and some good writing? I wonder what ideas you came up with.
Here are my ideas.
The man and his wife want to help the hungry man even though they don't have very much food to share.
That's my caption for the picture.
And here is how I've explained what a Muslim might learn.
A Muslim might follow the Quran by donating money or food to help the poor.
I wonder what ideas you came up with.
In the second part of the lesson, we're going to think about how Muslims show care for others.
How do Muslims show care? Here is a food bank.
It was set up by a group of Muslims who could see that there were people in their community who needed help and some families who needed food.
They found an empty shop and they set up a place where people who don't have enough food could come and get some help.
Can you see the bag of food in the picture? These bags have been donated by someone who wants to help others.
And when they went shopping, they bought some extra food to give to the food bank.
The food is sorted out and put on shelves ready to give the people who ask for help.
And people who need food are given a bag full of food to last them a few days.
All the food is donated by people who want to help the poor in their community.
Some of the people who come to the food bank to ask for help need more than food.
They might be feeling sad or lonely.
Can you see these comfortable chairs? This is a good place to sit and have a chat with one of the friendly volunteers at the food bank.
Everyone in the local community can ask for help.
This food bank is for everyone, not just for Muslims. Here is Arif.
He helps at the food bank.
Listen to him talking about why helping at the food bank is so important to him.
<v Arif>Hello, my name is Arif and I'm a Muslim.
</v> I work at the Humanity First Food Bank in a town called Muirfield.
It's very important for me as a Muslim to help other human beings.
I pray to God, but I also want to make sure that all of my other human beings, irrespective of what religion they are, can get help.
That's why at this food bank we try and help everybody.
We help older people, younger people, we help children and it's very nice that we're able to help so many different people from many, many different backgrounds.
If people are hungry and they cannot get food, they can come to our food bank and we can give them a food parcel.
It doesn't matter what religion they are, it doesn't matter what they believe in, we will try and help everyone that we can.
<v Narrator>Arif is a Muslim.
</v> He follows the teaching in the Quran, and here he is explaining why he believes Muslims should care for their neighbours.
<v Arif>This is a quote from a Muslim</v> which says that you are not a true neighbour if your neighbour next door is hungry.
So if your belly is full and you've got plenty of food, but your neighbour next door is going hungry, then you're not a real Muslim.
What that means is every Muslim should try and help their neighbour.
Neighbour doesn't just mean the person living next door to you.
It means anybody living in your neighbourhood.
So if you know someone that's hungry and you've got food in your house or you know somewhere where you can get food to them, you should try and help.
That is the duty, and that is what every Muslim should try and do.
So here's a quick check to see what we've remembered today.
Can you complete the sentence? Muslims follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad by is it A, caring only for other Muslims or B, caring for anybody who needs help or C, caring only for people they know.
Pause the video while you think about your answer.
That's right, the answer is B.
Muslims follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad by caring for anybody who needs help.
Well done if you got that answer right.
Here's Nadia again.
Nadia helps at the food bank at her mosque.
She volunteers to help there.
And here she is explaining why she helps.
She says that everyone is welcome at the food bank.
It's not just for Muslims and it's not just for the people who go to the mosque.
It's for everyone in the community.
Nadia says that she likes helping because she enjoys meeting all the different people from the local community who are there, the volunteers who are helping, and the people who come and get the food because they need it.
Nadia is thinking a bit more about the story of the Prophet Muhammad and the Hungry stranger.
She says that she sometimes has to make sacrifices like the people in the story.
Do you remember how they sacrificed their food so that they could help the hungry stranger? Nadia has to sacrifice her time to help, even if she's very busy, she thinks it's really important to give her time to help at the food bank.
This is one of the ways that she follows the teaching and example of the Prophet.
Nadia says, "I have enough food to eat so I'm able to share with what I have with others in need." She says, "I buy extra food when I go shopping so I can donate it to the food bank as charity." So now it's your turn to do some thinking and some writing.
Nadia's sister is thinking about volunteering to help at the food bank at their mosque.
What could Nadia say to help her sister to decide? Think about all that we've done in our lesson.
Think about the reasons that Nadia gave for helping at the food bank and think about what Arif said about why he helps and some of the things he learns from the Quran.
Your task is to write down three ideas to help Nadia to say something to help her sister to decide whether to volunteer at the food bank.
I wonder if you can include some of today's key words in your writing.
Remember our key words are poor, community and charity.
See if you can include those words.
Pause the video while you do your writing.
Well done, you've worked really hard on your writing.
I wonder what ideas you came up with to help Nadia to help her sister to decide.
Here are some of the ideas I thought about.
I wonder if you can spot the key words.
I think Nadia should say something like this.
The Prophet Muhammad taught that Muslims have a responsibility to help the poor.
We might need to make sacrifices to give our time and money to charity.
But we can enjoy helping others and meeting people.
We have enough food so we can share with people in our local community by helping at the food bank.
Did you spot the key words that I used? I wonder if Nadia will be able to persuade her sister to help.
What ideas did you come up with? Did you use some keywords in your writing? Well done if you managed to fit some of them in.
So we've learned a lot today.
We've learned that Muslims try to put Prophet Muhammad's teaching into practise by caring for the poor.
We've learned that Muslims have a duty to give money to charity, and we've learned that Muslims show care today by supporting people who need help, like Nadia and Arif volunteering at the food bank.
And we've learned that Muslims try to help everyone in the community, not just other Muslims. So well done for working so hard today.
I've enjoyed working with you and I hope to see you again soon.
