Hello there.
My name is Mrs. Afshan.
We are going to have such a great time learning together in this lesson.
Today's lesson is called Belonging to a Church from the unit, Places of Worship: What Makes Them Sacred? The outcome of today's lesson is: "I can describe how some people belong to different places of worship." We are going to work really hard today.
I'm here to help and we can learn together.
These are some of the words we'll be exploring in our lesson today.
The words are: worship: showing respect, devotion or love for something or someone.
Sacred: holy and deserving respect, devoted to God.
Belonging: a feeling of being accepted or part of a particular group.
Shall we have a go at reading these words.
My turn first and it'll be your turn.
Worship.
Worship.
Sacred.
Sacred.
Belonging.
Belonging.
Well done.
You did that really well.
Today's lesson has three cycles, but first, we'll be looking at What is a place of worship? Let's get started with our lesson.
What is worship? Hmm? Great thinking, well done.
Here's Jun, who says, "Worship means showing respect, devotion, or love for something or someone." It's time for a check for understanding.
What does worship mean? Is it showing respect, devotion, or love for something or someone? Is it playing a game with friends, or eating your favourite food? Have a go.
Well done if you had showing respect, devotion, or love for something or someone as your answer.
That is correct.
Let's meet Sophia.
Sophia is a British Christian from London.
She visits her church to worship every Sunday.
Many Christians visit a church to worship God and meet other Christians, just like Sophia.
Sophia says, "I love my church.
It is a special place where people gather to worship God together." Time for another check.
Where do many Christians go to worship God? Is it a mosque, a church, or a synagogue? Well done.
A church.
That is correct.
Many Christians go to a church to worship God.
Here's Noor.
Noor is a British Muslim who visits her mosque with her family.
Here's an image of Noor's mosque in London.
Many Muslims come to a mosque to worship God together.
Just like Noor.
Noor says, "I love hearing stories about being kind and I leave the mosque feeling happy and connected." Time for another check.
Where do many Muslims go to worship God? Is it a mosque, a church or a synagogue? A mosque.
Well done.
This is Rafi.
He is Jewish.
He visits his synagogue every week with his family.
Here's an image of Rafi's synagogue.
Many Jews go to a synagogue to worship God together.
Rafi says, "At my synagogue, I pray, learn and listen to the songs and stories with everyone." Time for check for understanding.
Where do many Jews go to worship God? A mosque, a church or a synagogue? A synagogue.
That is correct.
Many Jews go to worship God at the synagogue.
Well done.
Now we know a place of worship is somewhere people go to worship God together.
Jacob says, "It's a special place where you feel close to God." Aisha says, "It's a place where you can pray and talk to God." And Jun says, "It's a place where you can go to learn how to love others and feel happy." Remember what Jun said about a place of worship? He said, "It's a place where you can go to learn how to love others and feel happy." Give two more reasons why a place of worship is important to believers.
You can pause the video now and come back to check your answers.
Let's check our answers.
Reasons why a place of worship is important to believers.
A place of worship makes people feel close to God.
A place of worship will help people feel peaceful and happy.
A place of worship is where you can pray and talk to God.
Now we're going to look at What does sacred mean? Are you ready? What does sacred mean? Jacob believes sacred is something that is holy or dedicated to God.
Aisha says that most people treat it with respect and extra care.
Let's do a check for understanding.
What does sacred mean? Something that is holy or dedicated to God, or something that is fun to play with, or is it something that is very expensive? Have a go.
Great work.
Sacred means something that is holy or dedicated to God.
You got that right.
Many Christians describe a church as a sacred place.
Sophia believes that her church is a sacred place.
Here's Sophia.
Let's listen to Sophia as she shares why her church is such a sacred place.
<v Sophia>Hello everyone.
</v> I'm going to tell you about my sacred place, which is the church.
A church is a holy place because we read the Bible and respect God when we do it.
I really like singing the songs.
It is a place dedicated to God because it is a church and we sing songs happily and we pray to God each day.
I enjoy communion at church.
We eat bread and drink wine to remember Jesus dying for us.
Sometimes I help give out the communion.
In our church, we believe children are really important.
<v ->Let's remind ourselves,</v> can you think of three things Sophia said about why church is sacred to Christians? Jacob says, "She reads the Bible at the church to show her respect towards God." Aisha says, "She believes it is a place dedicated to God." And Jun says, "She enjoys communion and eats bread and drinks wine to remember Jesus' sacrifice." Time for another check.
Communion is a special meal that reminds Christians of Jesus's sacrifice.
True or false? Correct if you had true as your answer.
Sophia talks about how she enjoys communion at her church where they eat bread and drink wine to remember Jesus dying for them.
Time for another task.
Hope you're ready.
Sam says, "I believe that a church is a sacred place for many Christians." Explain why Sam is correct.
You can pause the video now and come back so we can check answers together.
Sam is correct that a church is a sacred place because.
Let's check together.
It is a holy place.
It is a place dedicated to God.
It is a place where believers come to talk with God.
Believers show respect and treat it with extra care.
Well done.
You did that really well.
Now we are going to look at How do Christians show they belong to a church? Let's get started.
Many Christians say they feel like they belong to a church.
What is belonging? Let's have a think.
Jun says, "Belonging means feeling you are a part of a group or a community." Well done if you had the same idea.
Here's Asher.
Asher is another British Christian from London.
Let's watch Asher as he explains what belonging to a church means to him.
<v ->Hi, my name is Asher.
</v> I'm a Christian and I go to church every Sunday.
I go to church with my mum, my dad, and my two younger brothers.
When we enter the church building, there are always people around to say hello and welcome us in with a handshake and a smile.
This is really nice because it makes you feel like you're welcomed and a part of the church family.
When the service starts, we start off by singing praise and worship songs.
These are songs that we sing to say thank you to God for all the things that he's given us and all that he's done in our lives.
When we sing songs together at church, it feels like being part of a big family.
This is because even though we're all different ages and from different places in the world, we are all thanking the same God.
After that, we hear a talk about topics from the Bible, which we, as Christians, believe is the word of God.
We learn a lot in these talks and they help us to get closer to God.
My favourite part of these is where we learn about things that we can do to become even more like Jesus.
After that, we have another song to finish off the service and someone will usually pray for us at the end, which helps us to be encouraged and ready for the week ahead.
Then I talk to all my friends from church about what's been going on in their lives, and this is really nice because I get to talk to other people about the things that I believe in.
It's great to have friends at church because I know they'll always be there on a Sunday morning.
During the week we have meetings called Metro Connect, which is where we talk to each other about the Bible and about different things that are going on in our lives.
This is nice because I get to spend more time with people who also believe in Jesus and talk to them about lots of different topics.
<v ->Let's remind ourselves.
</v> Asher shows his belonging to the church by: being welcomed by his church family, singing praise and worship songs, listening to topics from the Bible, learning about things that he can do to become more like Jesus, praying together with others, spending more time with people who believe in Jesus.
Time for another check.
Choose two ways in which Asher shows a sense of belonging to his church.
Is it by being welcomed by a member of the church family? Is it by eating with members of the church family, or by people praying together with him, which encourages him? Have a go.
That's correct.
By being welcomed by a member of the church family.
And the other by people praying together with him, which encourages him.
Well done.
You got them right.
It's time for another task.
Jacob says, "Christians can have different ways to show they belong to a church." Describe three ways Christians show their belonging to a church.
You can post the video now and come back to check your answers.
Let's check our answers.
Christians show their belonging to a church by: praying together, listening to topics from the Bible, singing praise and worship songs, spending more time with people who believe in Jesus.
Well done, everybody.
Here's a summary of our learning today.
We now know a place of worship is important to believers.
We also know that a church is a sacred place and there are different ways Christians show their belonging to a church.
Well done.
You worked really hard and did all that learning.
Goodbye for now and I'll see you in our next lesson.
