Do you remember what parables are from our previous lessons? Good job if you do.
Parables are simple stories that teach a lesson.
This is what the structure our lesson is going to look like today.
We are going to go through the star words.
And then we're going to go through the following the four gospels, the parable of the Good Samaritan, t he parable of the sower, the parable of the wise and foolish builders.
I will also be teaching your song later on in this lesson.
How exciting! You will now need to think about your equipment and check that you're ready for today's lesson.
You will need a piece of paper, a pen and your brain.
I know you had lots of fun switching your brains on in the last lesson.
So we're going to do it again.
Do you remember how to switch them on? Okay, let's go.
Ready In one, two, and three.
Good job team.
Now we're ready for our star words.
On the screen you can see the star word, for today's lesson, I will be explaining the star words in more depth as we go throughout the lesson.
Let's say some of these out loud using my turn and then your turn.
Christianity.
New Testament.
Gospels.
Parable.
Samaritan.
Sower.
Wise.
Fantastic.
Now let's look at Gospels.
Lots of people wrote about Jesus's life after he died.
In the New Testament, which is a part of the Bible, there are four books which tell us about the life and the teachings of Jesus.
These books are called gospels, they are called? Good job.
They're called gospels.
Well done.
Gospels means good news.
The four gospels in the testament are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and john.
Say that with me, the four gospels in the New Testament are called Matthew, Mark, Luke, and john.
Great job.
Each gospel or book tells us the story of Jesus but in a slightly different way.
Pause the screen now to have a go at the task on the screen.
Did you remember all four? Well done if you did.
I would now like you to close your eyes and think about this question for a few moments.
Who do you love? Now, this can be more than one person.
I'm going to do the same with you.
Okay, so can you call your answers out for me? Maybe some of you said your parents or your siblings or your carers or a friend or maybe even a pet.
These are all great answers.
But today we are going to learn about how Christians believe that God wants them to love everyone, not just the people that are closest to us.
I am now going to tell you about the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Are you sitting comfortably? And are you ready to listen? I'm sure you are.
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.
"Teacher," he asked, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Now eternal life is continuing to live even after death.
"What is written in the Law?" Jesus replied, "and how do you read it?" The expert answered, "Love the Lord your God, with all your hearts and with all your soul, and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself." "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied, "do this and you will live." But he wanted to justify himself.
So he asked Jesus, "and who is my neighbour?" Pause the video now to complete the task on the screen.
There's your answer.
Did you get it correct? Good job.
Now let's continue with the story.
In reply, Jesus said, "a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, which is another place when he was attacked by robbers.
They stripped him of all his clothes and went away, leaving him half dead." with your fingers, can you match up the pictures to the key words? I'm going to give you a few moments to do them.
Did you get the same answers? Well done.
You are clearly following the story really well.
"A few minutes later, a priest was walking down the same path and noticed the man lying on the ground." What do you think the priest should have done when he saw the injured man? Yes, you think he brought over and help the injured man? Well, instead, he crossed to the other side of the road and acted like he didn't see the man.
Then a Levite, this is another Jewish person, someone from the same religion came to the place and also saw the man lying on the ground.
Can you predict what he did? He also crossed the other side.
To the other side of the road and pretended that he didn't see the injured man.
How does that make you feel about the injured man? Yes, I agree.
I feel very sorry for the injured man who's still lying half dead on the road.
Pause the video now to complete the task on the screen.
I would like you to check your answer against mine.
Do you want to find out what happened next? Me too.
Let's carry on with the story.
A Samaritan, he was travelling came to where the man was, and when he saw him, he took pity on him.
He went over to him and bandaged his wounds.
And then he poured some oil and wine.
He put the man on his own donkey and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
The next day, he took out to denarii which is money and gave them to the innkeeper.
"Look after him." He said, "and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have." So he promised that he will return and give back any money to the innkeeper, that he paid to look after this injured man.
Which of the three people do you think was a neighbour to the man who was left injured by the robbers? Can you point to the answer? Let's continue and find out what Jesus thought.
When Jesus asked, "which of these three do you think was the neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" The expert in the Law replied, "the one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." Which means Jesus said go and do the same yourself.
Pause the video now to complete the task on the screen.
Here's an example of what you might have said.
The key message here is about being kind and helpful to others.
Pause the video now and have a go at retelling the story of the Good Samaritan.
I'm going to model how you can use the pictures to retell the story.
Are you ready? Follow the pictures with me.
A man was attacked by some robbers.
They took his clothing and beat him up leaving in half dead.
A priest saw the injured man but crossed the road to the other side and pretended he didn't see the injured man.
Then a Levite who was from the same religion also did the same and ignored the injured man lying on the floor.
At this time, Samaritans and Jews didn't really get along.
But when the Good Samaritan saw the injured man, he showed pity and helped the injured man by bandaging his wounds and taking him to an inn on his donkey.
He gave the innkeeper some money, some denarii and asked him to keep keep the man safe and look after him.
Through this parable, Jesus teaches the importance of loving and being kind to everyone, including your enemies.
Now it's your turn to have a go at retelling the story of the Good Samaritan.
Pause the video now to have a go and I know you're going to have lots of fun retelling the story out loud or to someone at home.
Now, I would like to hear about one kind thing that you have done for someone else during lockdown.
Let me share mine first with you.
To give you an example.
During lockdown, I have helped get some shopping for one of my neighbours who is unable to walk to the supermarket.
Now, can you share one kind thing that you have done for someone else? Wow, you have all been so so kind and that's really nice to hear.
If you couldn't think of something, that's okay.
Maybe you can plan to do one nice kind of thing for someone else next week.
We are now going to look at another parable.
But this time the parable is called, the parable of the sower.
Before we start, I'm going to define some key words in this story.
Sower is another word for a farmer.
Another word for a farmer is? Good job.
A sower.
When farmers are sowing seeds, it means that the farmer is planting seeds and scattering them.
Sowing seeds means planting seeds.
When I say sowing, you say planting.
Sowing.
Good, planting.
Good job.
Now let's move on to the parable.
"A farmer went out to sow his seeds.
As he was scattering the seeds, some fell along the path and the birds came and ate it all up.
These seeds got destroyed.
Some fell on rocky places where it didn't have much soil, they sprout quickly because the soil was very very shallow.
But when the sun came through, the plants were scorched," which means they got really, really, really hot, and they withered, which means they dried up and shrank.
Other seeds fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants so that they could not bear grain.
These seeds died.
Finally, Other seeds fell on good soil, and they came up and grew and produced a crop and they multiplied sometimes 30,60 or even 100 times.
These grew and multiplied.
Then Jesus said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.
That seed that Jesus is talking about is God's message.
Some people will either ignore God's message or get distracted by other things and the message of God will not go through to them.
It's like the seeds that either got damaged or withered or died in the parable.
Now some people, they will hear God's message and retain it and keep it, which means like the good soil, they will have flowers and they will begin to grow.
The message of God has been spread by Jesus, but it's up to people to hear it and let the message grow within them.
Can you match up the headings with the correct description and picture? For example, the path matches up with the birds, that ate the seeds, and so they got destroyed.
And this matches up with the third picture where you can see a bird.
Pause the video now to have a go at this task.
Here are the correct answers.
How did you do? I know you're working really hard so fast, so give me a high five.
Good job.
I am now going to share the parable of the wise and foolish builders with you.
Except this time rather than telling you a story, we are going to sing a song.
How exciting? For the very first verse, which starts with the wise man built his house upon a rock, you will need to sing it three times.
Do not worry if you need to restart.
Remember, you can always rewind the video.
Are you ready to sing with me? ♪The wise man built his house upon a rock ♪ ♪The wise man built his house upon a rock ♪ ♪The wise man built his house upon a rock ♪ ♪And the rains came a-tumbling down ♪ ♪The rains came down ♪ ♪And the floods came up ♪ ♪The rains came down ♪ ♪And the floods came up ♪ ♪The rains came down ♪ ♪And the floods came up ♪ ♪And the house on the rock stood firm ♪ ♪The foolish man built his house upon the sand ♪ ♪The foolish man built his house upon the sand ♪ ♪The foolish man built his house upon the sand ♪ ♪And the rains came a-tumbling down ♪ ♪The rains came down ♪ ♪And the floods came up ♪ ♪The rains came down ♪ ♪And the floods came up ♪ ♪The rains came down ♪ ♪And the floods came up ♪ ♪And the house on the sand went SPLAT.
♪ That is the end of the song.
I hope you liked it.
If you would like to sing it again, you can rewind the video and sing along with me again.
So what do you think was the message of this parable? Pause the video now to complete the task on the screen.
Here's an example of what you might have said.
The key message here is about following the teachings of Jesus and the examples he sets.
Wow, you have worked so hard this lesson so far, and you have learnt about three parables this lesson.
I know how hard you're concentrating.
So really well done for that.
As we are now nearing the end of the lesson.
I would like you to summarise the three parables by matching up the parables to the lesson that we learned from that story.
You can do this with your finger or you can say it out loud.
Here are the answers.
Did you match them up correctly? If you did, well done High Five.
