Hi, I'm Mrs. Afshan.
Welcome to today's lesson.
We will explore the challenges Prophet Mohammed faced in his life that continues to inspire Muslims around the world today.
The lesson is called Prophet Muhammad's challenges from the Unit, Prophet Muhammad: How Does he Inspire Muslims, today? The outcome of today's lesson is, I can understand the challenges faced by the Prophet Muhammad during his life and prophethood.
Before we dive in, let's go over some keywords.
These words will help you to understand the context of today's lesson.
The words are Islam, which is the religion of Muslims, meaning submission to the will of God.
The next word is companion, someone who met Prophet Muhammad and believed in his message.
The next word is migration, which is the movement of people from one area to another.
And finally, Hijrah, which is Prophet Muhammad's migration from Makkah to Madinah.
Would you like to have a go at reading those words one more time? Well done.
Let's get started.
Today's lesson has two cycles in which we would first look at did people accept the Prophet Muhammad's message? The Prophet Muhammad grew up in Makkah, And at the age of 40 began receiving revelations from Allah through Angel Jibr'il.
This marked the beginning of his prophethood and the start of the Qur'an's revelation, which is the Holy Book of Islam, which continued over a period of 23 years.
The Prophet Muhammad shared the messages from Allah, God, which he received as revelations, with the people of Makkah.
What do you think happened when he did this? Did the people accept his messages? Let's find out.
This marked the onset of the Prophet's mission to teach people about Islam and to believe in only one God, Allah.
Time for a check before we move on and find it about the effects of Prophet Muhammad sharing the messages from Allah.
Let's see if you got this.
What marked the beginning of the Prophet Muhammad's mission? Was it teaching people to believe in many gods, or teaching people to believe in one God, Allah, or building the Ka'aba? What do you think? That's correct, teaching people to believe in one God, Allah, well done.
Let's meet Fatemeh.
Fatemeh is sharing her thoughts about Prophet Muhammad's message.
Fatemeh is a Shi'a Muslim and has a Muslim worldview.
She believes in the Prophet Muhammad and the Qur'an.
She thinks the Prophet's teachings are really important because they come from Allah and she believes the Qur'an helps guide her to live a good life.
Fatemeh shared, "As a Muslim, reflecting on the time when the Prophet Mohammed first shared messages from Allah fills me with pride and inspiration.
His dedication to teaching the belief in one God, Allah, reminds me of the importance of staying true to my faith.
The message of unity and devotion to Allah continues to inspire and guide many Muslims today." Let's look at the effects of Prophet Muhammad's messages being shared with the people in Makkah.
When the Prophet in Muhammad talked about believing in one God, Allah, many people in Makkah didn't accept his message.
They saw it as a big change because they were used to worshipping many gods and didn't want to give up their idols.
They also feared losing their power and wealth.
Time for another check.
People in Makkah accepted Prophet's message about believing in only one God, Allah.
True or false? False, because we know the reaction of people, how they reacted when Prophet Mohamed shared Allah's message about believing in one God.
And many people in Makkah didn't accept his message because they were used to worshipping many gods and idols.
Well done if you chose false as your answer.
Before Islam, the tribe who controlled Makkah made money from the pilgrimage to the Ka'aba where people worshipped idols.
They didn't like the Prophet Muhammad's message and tried to stop him by insulting him, offering money and power, and threatening him and his companions.
Let's see if you got that.
How did the people of Makkah try to stop Prophet Muhammad's message? Choose two answers.
Is it they liked his message and supported him, or they insulted him and his companions, or they stopped and threatened him, or they didn't react and carried on.
Choose two answers.
That's correct, they insulted him and his companions.
And the other answer, they stopped and threatened him.
That's correct.
Well done.
This brings us to Ahmed.
This is Ahmed, a British Sunni Muslim.
He shared his thoughts on how the Prophet Muhammad never gave up and continued to spread the message of Allah.
Let's see what Ahmed says.
"The Prophet was trying to teach people, in Makkah, to believe in Allah, but many people didn't listen because they were used to worshipping idols.
Even though they made fun of him and tried to stop him, the Prophet stayed strong and didn't give up.
This teaches me the importance of always staying true to my faith even when things are hard." Great reflection, Ahmed.
Here's our task.
Sam and Izzy are asked to share how the people of Makkah responded to the Prophet's message.
Whose explanation is correct and why? Let's read what Sam says.
Sam says, "The Prophet Muhammad shared the message of believing in only one God, Allah.
The people in Makkah didn't like it and insulted and threatened him and his companions." Now let's look at Izzy's.
Izzy says, "The Prophet Muhammad shared the message of believing in many gods and the people in Makkah supported him and his companions by welcoming him." Whose explanation is correct and why? You can pause the video now and come back when you're ready.
Are you ready to check your answer? Sam and Izzy are asked to share how the people of Makkah responded to the Prophet Mohammed's message, whose explanation is correct and why? Are you ready to share and check your answer? Sam's explanation is correct.
And why was Sam's explanation correct? Because the Prophet Muhammad shared the message of believing in only one God, Allah.
The people in Makkah didn't like it and insulted and threatened him and his companions.
It's because they were used to worshipping many gods and didn't want to give up their idols.
They also feared losing their power and wealth.
Well done if you included those in your explanation.
Great work.
We now know what happened when Prophet Muhammad shared his message with the people in Makkah.
Let's now go and find out.
How do we know God was protective of the Prophet? The Prophet Muhammad's message about believing in Allah, one God, and the teachings of Islam were spreading far and wide and many people started to follow him.
This meant that the Prophet Muhammad and his companions faced many challenges and persecution in Makkahh.
The story of Hijrah is one of the most significant events in Islamic history.
For Muslims, this is an important story about Allah's, God's, protection of Prophet Muhammad.
This story also marks the start of the first Muslim community.
Let's now listen to the story of Hijrah, the migration to Madinah.
Sadly, when Abu Talib, the Prophet's uncle, passed away, the Prophet found himself in great danger because some people in Makkah wanted to hurt him.
Soon, the Prophet Muhammad was commanded by Allah to leave the city of Makkah and migrate to Madinah for his protection.
At that time, the people of a city called Yathrib, now known as Madinah wanted the Prophet to be their leader.
Some Muslims already lived there having escaped from Makkah.
However, the Prophet couldn't leave Makkah yet because he was afraid that his enemies would see him, so he stayed there with his good friend, Abu Bakr, and his young cousin, Ali.
Time for a check.
Why did the Prophet Muhammad migrate to Madinah? Is it to escape persecution in Makkah, or to find new trade route, or to attend a religious festival? That's correct, he migrated to Madinah to escape persecution in Makkah.
Well done.
Let's find out what happened next.
The enemies had a meeting and thought of a plan to catch Prophet Muhammad.
They decided that each family should send a strong young man to wait outside the Prophet's house.
They would all attack him together in the morning so that his family couldn't seek revenge from all the families.
But that night, the angel Jibrael came to warn the Prophet not to sleep in his own home.
Understanding the danger, he asked Ali to sleep in his place and promised him he would be safe.
As night fell, the young men waiting outside grew tired and quiet.
When morning came and the door opened, they jumped forward to attack, but were surprised to find Ali instead.
They realised they had been tricked and quickly made new plans to catch the Prophet.
Meanwhile, the Prophet had met up with Abu Bakr, who was ready with two fast camels.
It was time for them to leave Makkah.
They rode south to confuse their enemies, since Yathrib was actually to the north.
They soon reached a mountain called Thawr, where they hid in a cold, quiet cave.
But the enemies didn't give up.
As soon as they realised the Prophet had escaped, they started searching everywhere, getting closer to the cave.
The Prophet in Abu Bakr listened quietly and Prophet Muhammad reassured his friend that Allah was with them.
One of the enemies said, "This looks like a good place for them to hide." Another voice replied, "Don't be silly.
No one has been there in a long time.
There's a spider's web at the entrance and a dove sitting on the ledge.
If there were people inside, the dove wouldn't still be there." After the men moved away, Abu Bakr turned to the Prophet, confused.
"What happened, there wasn't a spider or a dove when we came in." The Prophet just smiled.
A few days later, it was safe for them to leave the cave.
They made their way to Madinah where the Muslims welcomed them with joy.
The city was named Madinat al-Nabi, which means city of the Prophet, but today Muslims call it Al Madinah, meaning the city.
The journey from Makkah to Madinah is very special to Muslims as it demonstrates Allah's protection of the Prophet Muhammad and how the Prophet Muhammad showed perseverance when facing challenges.
Time for another check.
What saved Prophet Muhammad and his companion Abu Bakr while they were hiding in the cave of Thawr? A heavy rain, or a rock slide that blocked the entrance, or a spider's web and dove at the entrance.
What do you think? That's correct, a spider's web and a dove at the entrance saved Prophet Muhammad and his companion Abu Bakr.
You got that right.
Here we have Fatemeh and Ahmed who are reflecting and thinking about what they've learned from the story of Hijrah.
Fatemeh says, "The story of the Hijrah shows me that when we trust Allah, he will always protect us.
Even in the most dangerous situations, we can have faith that Allah will guide us." Ahmed says, "The Hijrah teaches me the importance of perseverance.
Prophet Muhammad didn't give up even when things were difficult and his faith in Allah never faded." The migration to Madinah teaches Muslims about faith, protection and perseverance.
No matter what challenges they face, they can trust that Allah, God, is always with them.
The Prophet didn't complete his Hijrah alone.
His companions helped him.
Muslims learned that they should help each other, especially during difficult times.
Time for a check.
Let's see if you got this.
The migration to Madinah teaches Muslims about faith and.
What do you think? Is it kindness, generosity, or protection and perseverance, or courage and strength? Have a think.
That's correct, protection and perseverance is the right answer, well done.
Time for our next task.
Here are some sentences about the key events from the story of Hijrah.
Match each event with the lesson it teaches to Muslims. The Prophet Mohammed trusted Allah to keep him safe during the journey, even though it was very risky.
Second event, the Prophet faced many challenges, but he didn't give up.
Third, the Prophet didn't complete his Hijrah alone, his companions helped him.
And finally, during the Hijrah, Allah protected the Prophet in amazing ways, like with the spider's web.
Now match these events with the lessons which are labelled on the right as A, B, C, and D.
You can pause the video now and come back when you're ready with your answers.
Let's check our answers.
We had to match the key ones from the story of Hijrah with the lessons it teaches Muslims. Prophet Mohammed trusted Allah to keep him safe during the journey, even though it was very risky, teaches Muslims to trust in Allah.
The Prophet faced many challenges, but he didn't give up.
The lesson we've learned is to persevere through challenges.
Third event, the Prophet didn't complete his Hijrahh alone, his companions helped him, teaches Muslims to help each other.
And finally, during the Hijrah, Allah protected the Prophet in amazing ways, like the spiders web, teaches that Allah protects all.
Well done if you match them correctly.
Great work.
Let's look at what we've learned in our lesson today.
The Prophet Muhammad shared the message of believing in only one God, Allah.
Also, the people in Makkah didn't like it and insulted and threatened the Prophet and his companions because they were used to worshipping many gods and didn't want to give up their idols.
The Prophet Muhammad was commanded to leave Makkah and migrate to Madinah by Allah.
The migration to Madinah, which is called the Hijrah, teaches Muslims about faith, protection and perseverance.
