Hello, I'm Miss Kendrick, and if you've been going through these lessons on the Christianity unit, then I'm becoming a familiar face by now.
In this lesson, we're going to be looking at the story of the resurrection.
We're going to start by recapping some of the stories from Jesus's life and his crucifixion just to warm up our brains.
Then I'm going to tell you the story of the resurrection.
And we're also going to look at the story of the ascension as well.
And in this all I'm going to be talking about, why these beliefs are so important to so many Christians today.
So what are you going to need? You're going to need a pencil or a pen, you're going to need hopefully different coloured pen as well to make any corrections to your answer.
You're going to need some paper and please try and make sure you're working somewhere with minimal distractions.
I know this might be quite difficult if you've got lots of siblings running around or even parents running around.
You need to make sure you're getting rid of any distractions.
I know that this might be quite difficult, but turn off any radios or TV or anything like that, so that you're in a good working environment.
So to start off with, let's have a quick recap of one of the stories from Jesus's life.
If you've taken part in our lesson on Jesus's life, you will hopefully find this picture here familiar.
Can you remember which story this picture was from? I'll give you some clues.
There is somebody hiding up in a tree.
And this person dressed in red is most likely Jesus.
So this is a story of Zacchaeus, a tax collector who was cheating people of their money.
He was seen as a traitor in society.
But in response to Jesus's love, he changed his ways.
Next one, can you think what part was story from Jesus's life these pictures might be referring to? So this is referring to a miracle story in which people were fed miraculously from just two fish and five loaves.
Can you remember how many people were fed in this story? So it's 5,000.
So this is from the story of the feeding of the 5,000.
One of Jesus's miracles that is recorded in the Gospel story.
And finally, we have got this question, not finally, I've got one more.
This picture, which shows Jesus praying.
So this is Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before he was crucified.
And in this story, Jesus prays for the cup of suffering to be passed from him, but that ultimately, he wants God's will to be done.
Here we have a picture of the crucifixion.
So we have got a few things in this picture that's going to be really helpful for us to remember the story.
Obviously, we have Jesus crucified, but we also have Jesus with something on his head.
Can you remember what it is? So on his head, Jesus has a crown of thorns.
And above him is a sign, which said in three different languages, the King of the Jews.
So this links to the Christian belief that Jesus was the promised Messiah that the Jews had been waiting for.
Although some Jews at the time disagreed.
You can also see in this painting a mark on his side, and this shows the belief from the Gospel account that a spear was put into Jesus's side.
And for this Christians would say that it was certain that Jesus really did die, that he wasn't just in a faint.
And finally, I have this image of this model of the temple.
So what you can see is that the arrow is pointing to, is the veil between The Holy of Holies and the rest of the temple.
And in the Jewish temple, in Jesus's time, there was this really holy place in the centre of the temple where God's presence was believed to rest.
And God was so holy and so powerful that no one would really go into this space.
There was like a barrier between God and humans because human sin, separated people from God.
Now Christians believe that in their Gospel accounts, it says that when Jesus died, the curtain in the temple, this veil between God and humans was torn in two.
So it links the Christian belief that at the moment of Jesus's death, God and humans were brought into a good relationship again.
And we're going to look at that more in the lesson on atonement.
So I'm hoping that this recap has gotten your brains going that you're remembering some of these stories.
And we're going to answer some questions now.
It's really important that you answer these questions in full sentences.
Because then by the end of the lesson, you'll have a really good explanation of Christian beliefs.
If you just write one or two words, and don't include the wording of the question in your answer, if you were to look back at your work tomorrow, you might think, oh I don't have a clue what I was on about.
So think about your future self and any revision you might do based on these notes, and make sure you're writing in full sentences.
A really important word in Christianity is salvation.
Which means to be saved from sin and its consequences.
If you can remember back to the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible, God told them that if they were to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, that they would surely die.
Therefore, many Christians believe that the consequence of sin is death.
However, most Christians also believe that God is personal.
He wants to have a loving relationship with humans, and therefore he doesn't want us to undergo this consequence as if humans die because of their sin, then he can't have a relationship with us.
However, this needs to be balanced with the belief that God is just.
That means to be fair.
For example, if someone breaks something of yours that cost 10 pounds, you might think it was just that they give you 10 pounds to pay you back for what they've broken.
Christians believe that God is a God of justice, that he cannot allow injustice to happen.
Because he's a perfect judge.
That it would go against his nature to not punish sin, for example.
And we could see this in our own society.
If someone's committed a crime and they don't go to prison for it, because the judge just says, oh, I forgive you, people might call that a miscarriage of justice, especially if someone's committed a really terrible crime.
And then a more day to day sense.
I know as a teacher, that if I get something wrong and punish one person for something and not someone else, then I get cries of students saying, Miss, it's not fair.
It's really important to all of us that we are treated fairly.
So as I said, Christians believe that God cannot go against his nature of being just and if the consequence of sin is death, then that consequence must be carried out.
But Christians believe that Jesus takes on this punishment himself so that humans do not have to.
And this is what Christians believe happened on the cross.
Because Jesus is the Son of God in Christian belief that they believe he's God incarnate, they believe that his death actually defeats sin and death.
And this is going to be really important for when looking at in this lesson.
But before we go on, I've got a few more questions for you to answer.
So again, make sure you're writing in full sentences and make sure you get your corrections down afterwards.
Okay, so we're going to look at the resurrection.
So you should pause the video now and get down this subtitle, the resurrection, pause now and we're going to look at this story.
And we've got this really nice quotation here, which says, "He is not here, he has been raised." So I'm going to tell you that story in a moment.
But first, I've got some really important key words for you to learn.
Because we're going to be referring to them often, and I'm going to get you to learn them using look, cover, write, check, repeat.
Now, this is a really useful way to learn key definitions and key words.
I've said this before in other lessons in this unit, if you just write out the definitions over and over again perfectly, then you're not doing it properly.
Anyone who's looking at your work should see lots of mistakes and corrections, because actually mistakes help us learn.
And I know lots of us want to avoid making mistakes 'cause it doesn't feel very comfortable, we want to get things right immediately.
But, you know, if your work is covered with mistakes and corrections, then that's exactly what I would want to be seeing.
So, spend some time doing this task, learning these key definitions 'cause that will really help unlock a lot of Christian belief for you.
Okay, well done for completing the cover, write, check, repeat task, a really good way to check that you've really learned those key words, is to test yourself afterwards.
So that's a really good thing to do, maybe even after the lesson when you've had a bit of time for your brain to forget.
So you can make yourself remember them again.
Now I'm going to tell you the story of the resurrection that can be read in the Bible.
But before I go through it, I've just got some questions for you, which I'm going to ask you afterwards.
I'm showing them to you now so you know what to look out for, whilst I'm telling you the story.
So, firstly, what do the women find when they go to the tomb? Who speaks to them and what do they say? What did the women remember that Jesus had told them? How many days did the Bible say Jesus appeared to the disciples for? And what did Jesus say people needed to do to have eternal life? I'll give you another moment to have a look at those questions.
And you'll get them again after I've told you the story.
So the Gospel accounts say, early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene, who was one of Jesus's followers went to the tomb in which he was laid.
And she saw that the stone had been taken away from the entrance.
She went running to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb "and we do not know where they have put him." So she's afraid that Jesus's body has been stolen.
Then Peter and the other disciple went to the tomb.
The two of them were running but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb fast.
He bent over and saw the linen clothes which Jesus had been buried in, but he did not go in.
Behind him came Simon Peter and he went straight into the tomb.
He saw the linens lying there, and the cloth that had been around Jesus's head.
It was not lying with the linen cloths, but it was rolled up by itself.
Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in.
He saw and believed.
They still did not understand from the Scripture, which said that he must rise from the dead.
Then the disciples went back home.
Mary, however, stood crying outside the tomb.
While she was still crying, she bent over and looked into the tomb and saw two angels that dressed in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been.
One at the head, and the other at the feet.
"Woman, why are you crying?" They asked her.
She answered, "They have taken my Lord away, "and I do not know where they have put him." But she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
"Woman, why are you crying?" Jesus asked her.
"Who is it that you're looking for?" She thought he was the gardener.
So she said to him, "If you took him away, sir, "tell me where you've put him and I will go and get him." Jesus said to her, "Mary," she turned towards him and said in Hebrew "Rabbi," which means teacher, "Do not hold on to me," Jesus told her, "Because I have not yet gone back up to the Father, "but go to my brothers and tell them "that I am returning to him who is my Father, "and their Father, my God and their God." So Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and related to them what he had told her.
So, you're going to answer these questions based on what I've told you in this story.
It's a really dramatic story.
So try and get in lots of detail because this is going to be really important for understanding a lot of Christian beliefs.
Well done for answering those questions.
It's a really dramatic story, isn't it? Women go to the tomb and mourn Jesus, and they're going to prepare his body properly for burial.
And in one account, they find an angel instead, he says to them, "Why are you looking for the living "among the dead?" That means why have you come to a graveyard to find someone who's alive? After this, Jesus appears to his disciples for 40 days, according to the Gospel story.
And he says to them, that all they need to have a life after death, just like him is to believe in him.
And that last claim is a really big one.
Jesus is claiming that if people believe in Him, then they will go to heaven.
Now remember in previous lessons, we've talked about Jesus's authority.
And this is really important here.
If I told you that you would go to heaven, if you believed in me, you wouldn't believe me, I hope you wouldn't believe me.
If anything, you might think I'm a bit loopy, because I am just a human.
I do not have authority to say who will go to heaven.
But Christians believe that Jesus is God.
And remember, God is the judge who decides who will go to heaven and hell.
He is the all powerful God who has power over life and death.
So Christians would say that not only does Jesus have authority, because he is God, but they would say, evidence of this authority is the belief that he died and rose again.
They believe that his resurrection is evidence that he has power over death.
And this is one of the reasons why Christians believe the resurrection is so important.
Because they might say that if the story just ended with the crucifixion, then Jesus was a man who just lived and died.
However, Christians believe that Jesus was a man who died and lived.
And they believe that he is alive today.
And this is going to link to the next part of the story that we're going to look at.
But again, there's a couple of other things I want to go through with you first.
So firstly, I've got a thinking question.
Why do some crosses have Jesus on them whilst others are empty? I do got two examples here, I've got two different pictures.
Can you think of the reason why this might be the case from what we've been looking at in today's lesson? Hopefully you've gotten close but if you haven't, don't worry.
Now crosses that are empty like the one on the far side of me.
Remember the resurrection, there is the belief in the empty cross.
That is where there's a focus on the resurrection in particular.
While crosses which have Jesus on them, which are known as crucifixes tend to be focused more on Jesus's sacrifice.
Now, different types of Christians believe in both usually, however, some denominations of Christianity may focus on one more than the other.
So for example, you're probably more likely to see a crucifix the one with Jesus on it in a Roman Catholic Church, or maybe an Orthodox Church, and you're often more likely to see an empty cross in Protestant Churches.
But it's not to say that it might not be the other way around as well.
But that is just what might often happen.
So that's a really interesting thing for you to know.
That one focuses on the resurrection, and the other focuses on the crucifixion.
So before we look at the next part of the story, I've got some questions for you to answer.
Okay, so the next thing we're going to be looking at is the ascension.
So this beautiful stained glass window is giving a representation of the ascension.
What you can see here is Jesus rising up, and all of his disciples below him looking very surprised.
So Christians believe that Jesus was raised from the dead, and that he was raised to a new life.
And most Christians believe that Jesus's body was no longer a human body that could die in the same way that our human bodies can.
But many Christians believe that he had a new kind of eternal body.
Christians believe that once Jesus had died for people's sins and being resurrected that he had completed his work on Earth.
After appearing to his disciples for, can you remember how many days? So 40 days according to the Gospel story, his disciples gathered around him and asked, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore "the kingdom to Israel?" So if you remember my explanation of the story of Palm Sunday, lots of people believed that Jesus was going to ride into Jerusalem and get rid of the Romans and restore the kingdom to Israel.
But Jesus says, "It is not for you to know the times "or dates the Father has set by his own authority, "but you will receive power, "when the Holy Spirit comes on you." That's something important.
So I'm going to say it again, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you." And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
So that is a belief that Christians have that Jesus wants his disciples to tell other people about Jesus and the things that they believe he has done.
After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes and a cloud hit them from their site.
They were looking up intently into the sky as he was going when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.
"Men of Galilee," they said, "Why do you stand here looking into the sky? "This same Jesus has been taken from you into heaven "will come back in the same way "that you've seen him go into heaven." So this is the story of the ascension.
The word ascension comes from the word ascend, which means to go up.
So Christians believe that Jesus went up into heaven, and they believe that he is in heaven today, seated at the right hand of the Father.
So I've got a few more questions for you.
Again, write them in full sentences and make sure you're getting down any feedback.
Okay, so hopefully you've gotten your answers down.
And I want you to look at everything you've written so far and feel a sense of accomplishment.
You do have a lot and what you've got is a really good explanation of the events of the resurrection and the ascension.
And you're going to use some of this information to help you answer the final questions which are going to be a little bit harder.
On the next slide, I have got three beliefs that Christians have, because of the ascension.
So remember, a lot of Christian beliefs come from these stories in the Bible, and everything tends to link together.
So I'm going to read through them with you on the next slide.
Then I want you to decide what parts of the story that I've told you today, that belief links to.
And there's going to be a bit of help for you as well.
So the first belief is, number one, that Jesus is alive.
And underneath we've got a bit of explanation.
Jesus isn't just a man who once existed, he is alive now in heaven.
Christians will therefore pray to Jesus.
Look, we've got an influence in there as well, haven't we? Number two, Jesus finished his work.
Christians believe that Jesus finished his work on Earth and that the disciples were ready for the next part of God's plan in which they'd be guided by the Holy Spirit.
Number three, Jesus will come again.
Christians believe that the end of the world on the Day of Judgement Jesus will return to Earth.
So in your task, you need to explain what part the story, each belief links to? You will need to write your answer in full sentences.
So underneath, we've got a sentence started for you.
Christians believe that Jesus is alive today because in the story of the ascension.
So you need to explain what happened in the ascension story.
Therefore, Jesus isn't just a man who once existed, he is.
So what do Christians believe about Jesus today? Pause your video now and do your task.
Well done for answering all of those questions.
I do hope those last ones made you think hard, but in a good way.
And if you were having to think hard, that is good.
We want to think hard about these concepts, a lot of them are quite tricky.
And also thinking hard helps us to remember things longer.
So thank you so much for all of your hard work and for taking part in this lesson.
Now you need to complete the exit quiz.
