Hi, everyone, and welcome to today's lesson on Christian practises.
My name is Mrs. Day and you're so welcome at this lesson today.
And today what we are going to do, is a little bit of recap and practise of what we have already done.
So, we've been doing Christian practises, and we've looked at the nature of worship, different styles of worship, we've looked at different buildings, we've looked at baptism, Eucharist and confession.
So, this lesson will give you a chance to go through some of that, and see how much of it you really know.
So, what do you need for this lesson? You need to find a pen or a pencil or something to write with, you need to find some paper that you can write on or a notebook, and you need a different coloured pen, so that you can mark your work and add corrections.
Feel free to pause the video now, if you want to go and get any of that stuff, then you can press resume when you're ready to start.
Perfect.
So in this lesson, we are going to have an opportunity to recap, the learning that we have done in our first five topics.
Just try and remember these five topics together.
So, firstly we have what? Styles of worship.
Secondly, church buildings, thirdly, baptism, fourthly, Eucharist and finally the confession.
Well done, all right? So these are the five topics we are going to look over.
And we will go over key words, key concepts, and we will try a few exam questions.
So, after the end of this lesson, you should feel really confident, on everything that we have done so far.
So firstly, let's start by going through some key words.
So, these are the words that you need to make sure you have in your head.
There are also probably words that you haven't heard very much before.
So you might have forgotten some of them, but just try your best.
And as we do this, you can either write down the words or point at them on the screen.
Sometimes I think it's easier to write down the words, because then you have to commit to one.
Whereas sometimes if you just point out the screen, you can just move your finger around.
So, write them down commit to one.
Let's start.
So firstly, what of the following styles of worship is done alone? Is that liturgical worship, non-liturgical worship, private worship or public worship? So write it down or point at the screen, but make sure you make a decision, and you have five seconds.
Five, four, three, two and one.
The answer is, of course, private worship.
That is worship that you do by yourself.
What is confession? Is it acknowledgement of the sin of others, acknowledgement of your own sin, committing a crime or acknowledgement of issues in the church? you have five seconds.
Five, four, three, two and one.
It is of course acknowledging your own sin.
Christians will confess their own sin, they won't confess on behalf of other people.
What of the following terms cannot be used, instead of Eucharist? So, what word here could you not use to describe the Eucharist? So is if mass? Is it Divine Liturgy? Is it the Lord's Supper or baptism? Five, four, three, two and one.
The answer is of course, baptism.
That is a totally different sacrament, and it is not part of the Eucharist.
Which of the following terms is the correct term, to describe the baptism of babies? Is it baby baptism? Infant baptism? Believers baptism or adult baptism? Five, four, three, two and one.
The answer is, of course, infant baptism.
Really well done on this quick fire questions.
Now what we are going to do, is a range of questions where you just have to list two points.
So, you don't have to add an explanation, you just have to list your points.
So, you should spend about one minute on each of these, and as I said, you can just bullet point your answers.
So firstly, name two different forms of baptism.
You can pause and press resume when you're ready to find out the answer.
Great, let's look at the answers.
Please have another coloured pen ready for corrections.
Why do we do this? Because when you look back, then you can see what you were really good at, and what you might need to look at again, more.
So, it's actually to help you when you come back to look at this as well.
So, the question was, name two different forms of baptism.
You could have had infant baptism or believers baptism, I'm going to be a little bit harsh and not give you a mark for adult baptism, you need to call it believers baptism.
So, you can give yourself a mark there, out of two.
Next question.
Give two different understandings of the Eucharist.
Again, you can pause the video, and press resume when you're ready to look at the answers.
Great, let's check out your answers, pick up your different coloured pen.
So, two different understandings of the Eucharist.
Firstly, transubstantiation.
This is the Catholic belief, where the body in the blood of Jesus.
So the bread and the wine literally turns into the body and the blood.
Second understanding, is it as an act of remembrance to remember the death of Jesus.
So you can give yourself another mark out of two or add any corrections.
Thirdly, give two different items, in a Church of England building.
So you'll remember that we spent a lesson looking at some items of furniture in the Church of England, so you need to list two of them.
Okay, let's look at our answers.
So you could have had a font, which is a baptismal stand, the lectern which is where the Bible is read from, the stained glass window or the altar, which is where communion is taken from.
Give yourself another mark out of two, and add any corrections that you have.
Really well done on that, hopefully you're starting to feel like you remember this, and it's all coming back to you.
So, what I want you to do now, is to pause the video for three minutes and write down everything that you can remember about different styles of worship.
You can do it in the four different sections, in the main topics that we looked at, if you would like.
So three minutes, pause the video, and write down everything you can remember.
And then we'll go through lots of this together.
Really well done, I would love to see some of your work, and I'll show you how to share at the end, but really good effort.
Now we will go through this together.
So here are our different styles of worship.
You can lift a different coloured pen, and go through yours.
We will start with liturgical worship.
So, this is worship that follows a set structure, their set prayers and readings and it's quite traditional.
So you would know what to expect, anytime you walk in to a liturgical service.
Secondly, non-liturgical.
So this is more informal, it does usually have a structure, but this can change if the minister decides that.
And there's usually quite a lot of personal prayer.
So, if someone gets up to pray at the front, they'll usually make up their own personal prayer.
Then thirdly, private worship.
And this happens alone, and it can be liturgical or non-liturgical, so it can follow a set structure, or it can be more informal.
And remember, we looked at Rosary beads in the lesson.
So, those are beads that Catholics use to help them with their personal prayer.
So they will have beads, and they will touch a different bead as they pray for different people or different things.
And then finally, we have public worship.
And this happens with other people, usually this takes place on a Sunday service.
And it as well can be liturgical or non-liturgical.
All public worship means, is people are gathered together.
Really well done on that, feel free to pause the video here, and take down anything else that you want to add to your notes.
So, what I would like you to do now, is to have a go at completing this table.
This is a worksheet that you can download.
So you can either do it on your computer, or you can print it out.
And it deals with the three main lessons that we have just done.
They are baptism, Eucharist and confession.
And you need to go through for each one, and complete this table.
So, if we look at baptism, you have to say, what is the explanation of baptism? So what is it? And are there any Bible passages or verses that you could use to talk about it? And then one understanding of baptism, and another understanding.
So, this should probably take you about 10 or 15 minutes until up.
add as much detail to it as you can.
Okay? Test yourself, try to do it without looking back at your notes, see what you can remember.
So now, I would like you to pause the video for 10 minutes here, to complete this worksheet.
And when you finish, you can press resume, and we will go through some of these answers together.
Really well done.
Let's go through some of these answers together.
Remember, get out your different coloured pen, and you can take down some of these ideas.
Great.
So let's start with baptism.
So, the explanation is, is the practise of sprinkling or immersion in water, the passage or the Bible first that you could use, I went for quite an easy option, and I said the example of Jesus's baptism.
So you could talk about that.
And then the two different understandings.
First understanding is infant baptism, and this is the baptism of a baby, and it cures original sin.
Another understanding, is believers baptism, and this is when someone publicly declares their faith.
Secondly, we have the Eucharist, and this is the act of eating bread and drinking wine.
And again, I went for quite an easy Bible passage that you could use, and that is the Last Supper.
So the act of Jesus having that meal with his disciples.
And then the two different understandings.
Firstly, we have transubstantiation, and that is the Catholic belief that the bread and wine literally change substance, or turn into the body and the blood of Jesus.
And another understanding, is the remembrance.
And this is the Protestant belief that communion is a remembrance meal.
And finally, we have confession.
The explanation, this is acknowledging your own sins.
A Bible verse that you could use, is He will forgive us our sins.
That's quite short one, easy to remember.
One understanding of this, is the Catholic belief in confession to the priest.
So they believe that you must go to the priest and confess your sins, and he can forgive you.
Another understanding, is the Protestant belief in personal confession to God.
So they believe that they should personally confess to God and be accountable to other questions.
Really well done on that.
Please make sure that you take down any notes that you want in your different coloured pen.
You can pause the video to do that, and then press resume.
Great.
We are nearly at the end of today's lesson.
And the final thing that we're going to do is, have some exam question practise.
I know that word makes us all feel a little bit scared, but don't worry, we are going to do it together, and I will talk you through it.
So firstly, I want you to have a go at this question.
So, explain two different understandings of the Eucharist.
So, you need two mini paragraphs.
And in each paragraph, you need a point and an explanation.
So here are some central starters for you.
So one understanding is, so you can give a short sentence to describe the understanding, and then this means that.
So, your explanation is going to be much longer than your point.
This should take you about four or five minutes, So, the video to complete the task, and then press resume and we will go through it together.
Really well done.
Let's have a look at your answers.
So, here you will see that I have done one paragraph for you.
And I put the point in purple and the explanation in green.
So in purple it says, one understanding of the Eucharist is the Catholic belief in transubstantiation.
Notice that's quite short, all I'm doing there is giving my point, I'm not explaining it yet.
And then I go on to my explanation.
And I say, this means that Catholics believe that the bread and the wine taken during the Eucharist, literally turns into the body and the blood of Jesus.
So my explanation, is when I explain what that actually means.
You should have done something similar for your second paragraph, talking about how for Protestants, it is a remembrance meal.
Let's have a go at another one.
So, explain two different forms of baptism.
You need to do exactly the same thing.
So, give a point and explain it, then give another point and explain it.
It's really helpful if you do that in two separate paragraphs, just because then it's really clear what you are doing.
Remember, your point should be shorter, than your explanation.
So you can pause the video here, and resume once you are ready.
Let's have a look at the answer.
So again, I've done one paragraph for you.
So, look at how short my point is.
One form of baptism, is believers baptism.
That's it.
And then I explain it in my explanation.
This means that people will be baptised, after they have made a commitment to the Christian faith, through full immersion.
This is a public display of their commitment to their faith.
So here you say really short point, and the explanation is where you get all the detail.
That's where you explain it.
Hopefully you got something like that, you should also have another paragraph on infant baptism.
So your point should just be one form of baptism is infant baptism, and then you explain it in your explanation.
Really well done.
Might be useful, if now you understand, but if you aren't so sure, you can have another go at this, so you can go back, look at the question, and have another go at this question until you feel really confident.
