Hey everyone, welcome to your RHE lesson, Healthy hands are happy hands with me, Mrs. Wade First, we're going to have a look at some vocabulary.
Then, you've got a true or false quiz.
Then, have a close look at hand washing.
And finally, we've got an experiment today, that's exciting.
In this lesson, you will need a bowl, some water, pepper or any type of spice, a towel, and some soap.
Liquid soap is better, but any soap will do.
First of all, let's look at our vocabulary for this lesson.
Personal, can you say personal? Let me hear you, excellent.
Can you say hygiene? Let me hear you say hygiene, great job.
Can you say bacteria? Let me hear you, well done.
And viruses, let me hear you say viruses.
Lovely, great job.
What do you think personal means? Yeah, it means belonging to one person.
What about hygiene? It means to keep healthy and clean, stop those diseases.
Do you know what bacteria means? It's germs that you can't see with just your eyes.
And the last one, viruses, have a go at that one.
What do you think it means? Well, you're right, it's a type of germ.
When they get inside your body, they can make you very sick.
We don't want any of those, do we? Now, that you know what personal and hygiene mean, what do you think is included in personal hygiene? Pause the video and make a list of your answers.
Let's see what answers you got.
So, personal hygiene is brushing our teeth, washing our hands, wearing clean clothes, showering and bathing, keeping our noses clean, and minimising the spread of germs. Did you get those? Not all of them, but that's okay.
Did you get most of them? Great job, well done.
True or false, you should brush your teeth once a week? What do you think, thumbs up or thumbs down? Thumbs down, that's false.
You should wash your hands before eating, true or false? Thumbs up or thumbs down, what do you think? Well, done, that's true.
You should sneeze into the air.
True or false, thumbs up or thumbs down? It's false, you shouldn't sneeze into the air.
You should cough on someone's shoulder.
True or false, thumbs up or thumbs down, what do you think? False, you shouldn't be sneezing, or coughing on anyone's shoulder.
You should bath or shower regularly.
True or false, what do you think? It's true.
You should wash your hands after going to the toilet, true or false? It's true.
How do you wash your hands? Can you do some actions to show me? Oh, I can hear some of you doing the Happy Birthday song.
Does that mean you do the song to help you, so you know how long to do it for? That's a really good way of doing it.
Now, let's have a look at these people and see if they're washing their hands correctly.
Is that how you wash your hands? The first time, there was no soap.
The second time, there was only soap on his palms. Let's see if the Germ Buster can show us how.
Germ Buster! Wash your hands, warm water, I always put a little bit of water on first.
Get some soap, now, when you've got your soap you need to rub your palms together.
You need to rub the backs of your hands, and in between your fingers, round your thumbs.
You need to do this, so that you can get your nails and the tops of your fingers.
Then do this on your palms in a circular motion.
Now, when you're doing that, if you're unsure for how long to do it to, if you sing Happy Birthday that's 20 seconds, so that's the right amount of time.
Once all your soap's all rubbed into your hands, just rinse it off your hands, give 'em a good rinse.
Turn off the tap, and dry your hands.
Now, you need to make sure you dry them properly.
We got clean hands.
In this experiment, the water, the surface of the water is your hands, the pepper or spice is going to be the bacteria or viruses.
Now, we're going to do two tests in this experiment.
One, when you wash your hands without soap and one, when you wash your hands with soap.
The first thing you need to do is get a bowl and put some water in it.
You don't need to fill it right to the top.
You might need to ask your adult or carer for some help.
Pause the video and do that now.
Next sprinkle your pepper or spice on the top of the water.
Pause the video and do that now.
Now, dip your finger into the spice, or pepper and see what happens.
Pause the video and do that now.
Now, wipe your finger and dry it off.
Make sure there's no pepper or spice on it.
And this time, you're going to cover it in soap.
Pause the video and do that now.
Then, dip your finger into the pepper, or spice and see what happens.
Pause the video and do that now.
This is why using soap is so important.
The soap removes the oils from your fingers, which stops bacteria and viruses sticking to it when you use soap.
If you want to share your experiment, then share it with Oak National on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, see you later.
