Hi, everyone, my name is Ms. Growth, and I'm so excited to be with you here today.

We're going to be taking a look at the lesson, Being a Good Friend, and this fits into the unit, Healthy Relationships: What Makes a Good Friend? So let's get our looking eyes ready, our listening ears on, and our brains ready to do some thinking.

Today's lesson outcome is, I can describe the features of a good friend and a good listener.

Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules, and we've got some friends here to help us.

Laura says, "We should listen to others, and that means not interrupting when someone else is speaking." Andeep says, "Respect privacy." Jacob says, "No judgement ." And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation," and that means you can decide if you want to share something throughout the lesson or if you simply just want to listen.

These are today's key words and you'll see them pop up throughout today's lesson.

I will read them first to you and then you can repeat after me.

Are you ready? Kind.

Listen.

Great job, everyone.

So kind means treating other people well and thinking about their feelings, and listen means to hear and try to understand what someone is saying.

This is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with, What makes a good friend? A good friend is someone who we like to spend time with.

They are kind and make you feel happy.

We've got lots of good friends at the Oak National Academy, and here are some on your screen.

We have Alex, Lucas and Laura.

Alex says, "Can you think of a good friend?" I know I can think of lots of good friends at the Oak National Academy.

What do kind friends do? Kind friends share.

That means they might share their toys with you when you're playing, or maybe they'll share their items with you when you're working together in a classroom.

Kind friend takes turns.

That means everybody gets to have a go when you're playing together or doing something.

And kind friends help each other.

It might mean that if you've fallen over, they might help you get back up again, or if you're really stuck on knowing how to do something, they can help you to get through it.

Check for understanding.

True or false? A kind friend takes turns, and you can put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

A kind friend takes turns.

True or false? And pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said true.

A kind friend takes turns when playing and speaking.

Everyone is different and likes doing different things.

It's okay if our friends want to play something different to us.

Aisha says, "Sometimes I enjoy doing what other people do," and that's okay.

Check for understanding.

True or false? A kind friend always wants to do the same thing as us.

And you can put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

A kind friend always wants to do the same thing as us.

True or false? And pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said false.

Everyone is different and likes doing different things.

Okay, time for a task now.

Draw a picture of someone being a kind friend and then tell your partner why your picture shows a kind friend.

Pause this video so you have time to have a think, and then do the task.

Once you're finished, we'll go through your answers together.

So here are some pictures you could have drawn of someone being a kind friend.

You could have drawn somebody helping someone else, or you could have drawn two friends taking turns when playing.

Well done if you did something similar.

You could have said to your partner about your picture, "My picture has two friends playing together.

They are being kind because they are taking turns." Well done, Aisha, and she's also drawn a picture of two friends taking turns together.

Let's move on to the second part of our lesson.

What makes a good listener? A good listener is someone who looks when someone is talking.

A good listener is someone who takes turns to speak, and that means not interrupting when someone else is talking.

And finally, a good listener is someone who listens carefully with their ears.

Check for understanding.

Alex is talking about being a good listener.

Alex says, "A good friend uses their ears to listen carefully." Tell your partner two more ways to be a good listener.

Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Your answer could include, a good listener uses their eyes to look at someone when they are speaking.

And your answer could also include, a good listener takes turns when speaking.

Well done if you said something similar.

It's important to listen to others because it means that we can share ideas.

Maybe you're reading a book together with your friend and you can share ideas about the story.

It's important to listen to others because it can also mean that we can learn from each other, and I love listening to my friends because they teach me new and interesting facts.

Sometimes we might fall out with our friends, but when we listen to each other, we can find out how others are feeling.

This can help us to fix problems with our friends.

Jacob says, "I feel happy when others listen to me." So do I, Jacob.

Check for understanding.

Lucas and Andeep are talking about why listening is important.

Who do you agree with? Andeep says, "Listening is important because it can help fix problems with our friends." And Lucas says, "Listening is important because it means my friends will do what I say." Who do you agree with? Andeep or Lucas? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said that Andeep is correct.

Listening is important because we can find out how our friends are feeling and fix problems if we fall out.

Okay, time for a task.

Tick the features of a good listener.

A, they look at me when I am speaking.

B, they ignore me when I need help.

C, they talk when I am speaking.

And D, they listen to my feelings.

Tick the features of a good listener.

Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you ticked A and D, a good listener will look at me when I am speaking, and they will listen to my feelings.

Let's move on to the final part of our lesson.

What does a good friend do? Sometimes a friend might ask you to do something that you don't want to do.

It might be wrong or make you feel uncomfortable.

You might have a funny feeling in your tummy, or your heart might beat a little bit faster.

If this happens, it's important to say no.

You can say no and still be friends.

A good friend listens when you say no.

Izzy says, "They don't try to make you do something when you say no." And John says, "A kind friend cares about your feelings." Well done, Izzy and John.

Check for understanding.

True or false? A good friend stops what they're doing if you say no.

Put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

A good friend stops what they're doing if you say no.

True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said true, a good friend stops what they're doing if you say no.

When should you say no? You should say no if someone asks you to hurt someone else.

You should say no if someone asks you to keep a secret that makes you feel uncomfortable.

And you should say no if you feel uncomfortable or worried about anything.

Check for understanding.

When should you say no? A, when my friend asks me to do something that I know is wrong.

B, when my friend asks me to keep a secret that makes me uncomfortable.

And C, when my teacher tells me an instruction during a lesson.

When should you say no? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you ticked A and B.

You should say no if a friend asks you to do something that you know is wrong, and you should say no if your friend asks you to keep a secret that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Saying no does not mean that you are being unkind or a bad friend.

It's important to be understanding when our friends say no.

Izzy says, "If my friend says no, I say, 'That's okay,' and think of something else for us to do instead." What a great tip, Izzy.

Well done.

There are lots of times when it's okay to say no.

For example, if someone asks for a hug and you don't want one, you can say no.

If someone asks you to borrow your items, you can say no.

Or if someone asks you to play their game, you might really want to join in and you can say yes, but it's your choice to make.

Check for understanding.

True or false? Your friend is being unkind to you if they say no to you.

You can put your hands on your head if you think it's true or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

Your friend is being unkind if they say no to you.

Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said false.

Saying no does not mean the friend is being unkind, it means they are telling us that they do not want to be involved.

It is their choice.

Okay, time for a task.

Write a reply to Jacob which shows you are a good friend.

Remember to use the word No in your answer.

Jacob says, "Let's steal his ball so we can play instead." Pause this video so you can have some time to think, write your response, and then we'll go through your answers together.

You could have written, "No, that's not being a kind friend.

Let's see if he will let us join in his ball game instead." Well done if you included the word No in your answer, and well done if you wrote something similar.

So that brings us towards the end of our lesson.

I've had a brilliant time with you here today.

Here is a summary of everything that we've covered today.

A kind friend shares, takes turns, and helps you if you are stuck.

A good listener uses their eyes to look, takes turns to speak, and tries to listen carefully to what someone is saying.

When we listen to each other, we can fix problems in our friendships as we hear other people's points of view.

A good friend listens to you and stops what they're doing if you say no.
